Taxonomy & naming
Hemibrycon inambari was described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba and Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco in 2010 from specimens collected in the upper río Madre de Dios drainage of Peru. The holotype, MUSM 35491, is a male of 2.5 in standard length collected from the río Araza within the río Inambari basin at Sirihua, Camanti, Quispicanchi, Cusco, Peru (13°24'05"S 70°53'57"W). The Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid, attributing it to Bertaco & Malabarba, 2010.
Hemibrycon is placed within Characidae, the largest and most diverse family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics. FishBase places the genus in the subfamily Hemibryconinae of family Stevardiidae, a classification that reflects ongoing revisions of higher-level characid systematics; the top-level family assignment used here follows the Catalog of Fishes treatment of Characidae in the broader sense. The genus Hemibrycon is distributed widely across northern and western South America, and many of its members are associated with Andean and sub-Andean drainages where the high fish diversity of the montane foothills remains incompletely documented.
Morphology
Hemibrycon inambari is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid. The largest male recorded in the original description measured 2.5 in standard length; the largest female reached 3.5 in SL. FishBase records a maximum of 2.5 in SL for males and 3.5 in SL for females. The species has a lateral line scale count of 41–44, a character that helps distinguish it from congeners within its range.
A distinctive feature of the genus — and of H. inambari specifically — is the presence of bony hooks on the dorsal, pectoral, anal, and pelvic fin rays of adult males. These retrorse hooks are a secondary sex character shared across many Stevardiinae and Hemibryconinae and are believed to function in male–male contact during spawning interactions. In overall appearance the species is a typical silver tetra of the subfamily: a bright, unmarked silver body with the characteristic characid adipose fin and a forked tail.
Habitat
Hemibrycon inambari is known from the río Alto Madre de Dios and río Inambari drainages within the upper río Madre de Dios system of south-eastern Peru. These rivers drain the eastern flanks of the Andes and the sub-Andean foothills of the departments of Cusco and Puno, flowing through a landscape of montane cloud forest and premontane tropical forest before entering the broader Amazon lowlands. The original collection site in the río Araza (río Inambari basin) lies in the high piedmont zone at roughly 1,0 ft elevation.
The species is described as benthopelagic and inhabits freshwater streams. The original description characterises its habitat as clear streams of the upper Madre de Dios drainage — typical of the fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, low-turbidity headwater streams of the Andean foothills where many endemic montane characids occur. Biogeographically it falls within the Beni–Madre de Dios and Madeira Shield Tributaries units documented in comprehensive Amazon ichthyofaunal studies.
Feeding
No specific dietary data for Hemibrycon inambari are available in the published literature or from the pre-crawl sources. By analogy with other Hemibrycon and with sub-Andean characids of similar body form and habitat, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and insects that fall to the water surface — supplemented with algae and organic detritus.
In the clear, fast-flowing streams it inhabits, prey availability would be driven by benthic invertebrate production and allochthonous input from the surrounding forest canopy. In the aquarium, unrelated small South American characids of similar size and ecology accept a range of prepared foods, live and frozen invertebrates, and fine plant material, but specific husbandry data for H. inambari are sparse.
Mating
Specific observations of mating behaviour in Hemibrycon inambari have not been documented in the literature available. As a member of Hemibryconinae and Characidae more broadly, it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner in which males court females without forming lasting pair bonds and with no parental care of eggs or young. The bony fin-ray hooks present in adult males of H. inambari — on the dorsal, pectoral, anal, and pelvic fins — are a secondary sex character found across the subfamily and are generally interpreted as facilitating physical contact between male and female during spawning, a form of clasping or friction-fit that helps the male remain close to the female at the moment of egg release.
Male–male competition for access to spawning females, mediated by these morphological structures and probably by active display, is inferred as the primary mating dynamic. Receptive females would release eggs into the water column or among fine-leaved vegetation, where they sink or adhere passively.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Hemibrycon inambari are documented in available sources. Based on the biology of related Hemibrycon and of the broader sub-Andean characid assemblage, the mode is egg-scattering with no parental care: eggs are broadcast or distributed among fine-leaved aquatic plants and submerged debris, and both eggs and fry are left to develop without attendance. Adults do not guard eggs and will consume them if they encounter them.
Breeding in this genus in the wild is presumably tied to seasonal hydrological cycles in the Andean foothills, where annual flood pulses and associated shifts in water temperature and chemistry are strong cues for spawning. In captivity the species is not established in the ornamental trade, and husbandry and breeding protocols have not been described.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon inambari is not an established aquarium fish and is absent from the mainstream ornamental trade. It is collected for scientific purposes and is represented in natural history collections (holotype at MUSM, Lima) but is not cultivated or sold commercially as of the time of writing. An aquarist who encountered specimens would be working without a published husbandry record for the species.
By inference from congeners and from other sub-Andean stream tetras, H. inambari would likely do best in cool, well-oxygenated, clear water with moderate to strong current — conditions approximating its headwater stream habitat at Andean foothill elevations. Water temperatures below the tropical norm (perhaps 64–75 °F) and neutral to slightly acidic, soft to moderately hard chemistry would be a starting assumption. The species is data sparse for aquarium purposes, and any keeper working with it should document and share observations with the scientific community.
Conservation
Hemibrycon inambari is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 23 April 2014 by Ericka Correa and Hernán Ortega Torres of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos natural history museum. The Near Threatened listing reflects the species' restricted range — confined to a few river basins in the upper Madre de Dios system of south-eastern Peru — combined with growing pressures on Andean foothill ecosystems in that region.
The montane forests and headwater streams of the Cusco and Puno piedmont face ongoing threats from agricultural expansion, road construction, and small-scale mining activity, all of which degrade the clear, fast-flowing stream habitats on which narrow-range endemic characids like H. inambari depend. As an indicator species for the biological community of the upper Madre de Dios drainage, its conservation is linked to the broader protection of sub-Andean river systems in south-eastern Peru.
