Hemibrycon metae is a slender, silver-flanked characid from the Meta River drainage of Colombia, one of a genus of fast-water tetras that inhabit clear, oxygen-rich Neotropical streams. The species was described in 1930 by George S. Myers and remains one of the less-documented members of its genus in both the scientific literature and the aquarium hobby. Like its relatives it is an egg-scattering, open-water spawner suited to cool, well-oxygenated conditions — a fish of the current rather than still, planted pools.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon metae was described by George S. Myers in 1930 from material collected in the Meta River basin of Colombia. The Meta is one of the principal Orinoco tributaries draining the Colombian llanos (eastern plains), and the species epithet metae refers directly to this type locality. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the valid name as Hemibrycon metae Myers, 1930.

The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a group of elongate, fast-water characins distributed across Andean foothill and piedmont streams from Venezuela and Colombia south to Peru and Bolivia. Hemibrycon species are superficially similar to one another and have historically been difficult to distinguish without meristic counts; the genus has undergone numerous revisions as molecular and morphological data have refined generic limits within Characidae. H. metae is assigned to the Orinoco faunal zone and is most closely associated with other Meta-drainage species within the genus.

Morphology

Hemibrycon metae has the typical body plan of the genus: an elongate, moderately compressed silverside tetra with a streamlined profile adapted to flowing water. A dark lateral stripe runs the length of the body from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, where it terminates in a caudal spot characteristic of many Hemibrycon. The flanks are silvery, with a faint iridescent sheen under good lighting. Precise size data are sparse in accessible literature; Hemibrycon species in the genus typically reach 3–4.5 in total length at maturity, and H. metae is expected to fall within that range, though confirmed measurements from primary literature are not available in the current record.

In flowing-water species such as Hemibrycon, spawning is typically triggered by increases in water flow and fresh, well-oxygenated conditions — cues that replicate seasonal rainfall and flood onset in the natural habitat. Males court females with lateral displays and active pursuit through the water column.

Spawning occurs over open substrate or among fine-leaved plants and aquatic vegetation, with eggs scattered semi-adhesively. No pair bond forms, and adults show no guarding behaviour. Breeding

The species requires well-oxygenated, clean water with good circulation; an external filter providing a moderate current and efficient gas exchange is appropriate. Water should be soft to moderately hard and neutral to slightly acidic, reflecting the piedmont stream origin, with temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius.

As a schooling fish, H. metae should be kept in groups of six or more; isolated individuals or pairs become stressed and lose condition. Tank decor replicating the Andean piedmont stream — smooth river pebbles, some fine gravel, driftwood, and patches of hardy plants — suits the species. Tankmates should be of similar size and temperament; other peaceful Orinoco-basin tetras and small catfishes are appropriate companions. The species is expected to be peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates but may nip at long-finned or very slow fish, as is common in active, fast-water characins.
