Hemibrycon microformaa is a minute characid from the Atrato river basin of northwestern Colombia, barely reaching 1 in standard length — a size that sets it apart from all its congeners and gave rise to its epithet. Assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient, it is one of the smallest members of a genus of slender, laterally compressed stream-fishes distributed across Andean and trans-Andean river systems, and its biology in the wild remains poorly documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon microformaa was described by Román-Valencia and Ruiz-C. in 2007. The genus Hemibrycon Günther, 1864 belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name; the combination Hemibrycon microformaa Román-Valencia & Ruiz-C., 2007 stands without parentheses because the species was described under that genus and remains there.

The type locality of H. microformaa is the Atrato river basin of northwestern Colombia, making it one of a handful of Hemibrycon species occurring in trans-Andean Pacific-slope drainages rather than in the Andean Atlantic-slope systems where most congeners occur. Within Hemibrycon, the species is placed in the broader Characinae sensu lato grouping; the family Characidae encompasses hundreds of genera and thousands of species across South and Central America and Africa, and Hemibrycon itself numbers several dozen species distributed from Colombia and Venezuela south through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

Morphology

Hemibrycon microformaa is distinguished from all other Hemibrycon by its exceptionally small adult size, reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length — well below the roughly 1.5 in or more attained by congeners. This small maximum size is the primary diagnostic character.

Additional diagnostic characters include flat dorsal and ventral edges of the orbit, unequal jaws in which the upper jaw is longer than the lower, a subterminal mouth position, and elongate pelvic fins that extend to reach the anal-fin origin. A dark lateral band runs along the flank. Meristic counts from type material include dorsal-fin rays 9–10, anal-fin rays 17–19, and vertebrae 33–34. The body is benthopelagic in habit and slender in overall shape, consistent with a small-stream rheophilic characid.

Habitat

Hemibrycon microformaa is a freshwater benthopelagic species endemic to the Atrato river basin in northwestern Colombia. The Atrato drains a humid, heavily forested region of the Chocó biogeographic province, one of the world's most biodiverse tropical areas, and flows northward into the Gulf of Urabá on the Caribbean coast.

Beyond basin assignment and life-zone (freshwater, benthopelagic), detailed habitat data for this species — water temperatures, pH, current regime, substrate preferences, depth range — have not been captured in the available literature. Given the Chocó region's typically warm, soft, slightly acidic lowland waters, these are plausible background conditions, but no measured parameters for H. microformaa's actual collection sites are available in the sources consulted.

Feeding

No published dietary data specific to Hemibrycon microformaa are available. Hemibrycon species in general are opportunistic omnivores or drift-feeding predators on small invertebrates; stomach-content studies on congeners typically reveal aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects, microcrustaceans, and occasional plant or algal material.

Given the minute size of H. microformaa — under 1 in standard length — prey items would necessarily be very small: microcrustaceans, midge and chironomid larvae, small surface-borne terrestrial insects, and aquatic micro-invertebrates are the likely staple diet. In an aquarium context, finely crushed flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, Daphnia, and micro-worms would cover the dietary base of such a small characid.

Mating

No specific reproductive or courtship data have been published for Hemibrycon microformaa. Based on the genus and family biology, H. microformaa is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, consistent with the general Characidae reproductive pattern.

In related small Hemibrycon species, males typically exhibit minor sexual dimorphism in fin shape or develop small hooks on anal-fin rays, which serve as a contact structure during the spawning embrace. Courtship is brief; pairs or small groups scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, or gravel substrate. The adults make no subsequent investment in egg or fry survival.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Hemibrycon microformaa are absent from the available literature. The species is not known from the aquarium trade, and no husbandry accounts describing spawning behaviour, egg counts, incubation times, or fry rearing have been located.

By analogy with other small characids, spawning would likely occur over fine-leaved vegetation or soft substrate, with eggs hatching within two to five days at tropical temperatures and fry requiring infusoria-sized first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The species' minute adult size suggests equally small, delicate larvae. Data sparse.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon microformaa is not currently known in the aquarium hobby and is not traded commercially. Its extreme small size — under 1 in — would make it a fascinating nano-tank subject were it ever to become available, but no husbandry data, captive-care records, or tank-bred stock are documented.

For any future keepers, the general template of a small trans-Andean Characidae would apply: a well-planted tank with soft to moderately hard, slightly warm water, gentle flow, subdued lighting filtered through surface plants, and very small live or frozen foods. A species tank or a biotope pairing with similarly sized, non-competing Chocó-region fish would best respect its diminutive proportions. Data sparse.

Conservation

Hemibrycon microformaa is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2014). The DD listing reflects a lack of sufficient information to determine the species' risk category rather than confirmed stability; it means the taxon is poorly surveyed, not that it is common or secure. The Atrato basin, while large and still partially forested, faces ongoing pressures from gold and platinum mining, agricultural expansion, deforestation, and pollution — pressures documented across the Colombian Chocó region that affect stream-fish communities broadly.

A species of such small maximum size and apparently restricted range within the Atrato system may warrant concern once survey effort increases. The DD designation should not be read as assurance of safety; it is rather a prompt for further fieldwork and population study to determine whether the species meets criteria for a threatened category.
