Hemibrycon mikrostiktos was described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba and Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco in 2010 in a comprehensive revision of the Cis-Andean species of Hemibrycon Günther published in Neotropical Ichthyology. That paper reviewed the genus across its range on the eastern slope of the Andes and in the lowland drainages west of the Guyanan and Brazilian shields, recognising several new species and re-diagnosing the genus within the subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae. Hemibrycon mikrostiktos was described alongside two other new species, H. helleri and H. beni, in that same work.
The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hemibrycon mikrostiktos Bertaco & Malabarba, 2010, placed in the family Characidae within the order Characiformes. The genus Hemibrycon is a species-rich, predominantly Andean and sub-Andean genus of small to medium-sized characids distributed from Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia and into northern Argentina. Within Hemibrycon, H. mikrostiktos is diagnosed primarily by the reduced size of its humeral spot and by the combination of vertebral and fin-ray counts that distinguish it from all congeners known at the time of description.
Morphology
Hemibrycon mikrostiktos is a small fish, reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in. The body is elongated and laterally compressed in the typical fashion of the genus, with the general facies of a streamlined, fast-water characid. Diagnostically, the species carries a distinctly small humeral spot comprising only 2–3 scale series in vertical depth, compared with 4–9 scale series in most congeners — this is the character captured in the specific epithet and the primary visual feature setting it apart from relatives.
Additional diagnostic meristic characters include 40–41 vertebrae (a relatively high count for the genus), 8 dorsal soft rays, and 18–20 anal soft rays. Trophic level has been estimated at 3.0 on the FishBase logarithmic scale, consistent with insectivorous or broadly invertebrate-feeding habits shared by relatives. Beyond these characters, detailed descriptions of colouration and soft anatomy have not been widely published outside the original description, and the species remains relatively data-sparse in secondary literature.
Habitat
The known distribution of Hemibrycon mikrostiktos is restricted to the Río Aguaytía in the upper Río Ucayali drainage, Peru. The Río Ucayali is one of the principal tributaries of the Amazon, and the Aguaytía sub-basin drains the eastern flank of the Andes in central Peru. Hemibrycon species in this region typically occupy swift to moderate-current streams and rivers in foothill and sub-Andean zones, often over rocky or gravelly substrates in clear to lightly turbid water.
The species is classified as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical in its environmental affinities. Precise water-chemistry data from the collection sites of H. mikrostiktos are not documented in the available literature, but the broader Ucayali headwater system is characterised by warm, slightly acidic to near-neutral, soft to moderately hard Andean foothill water, with water temperatures broadly consistent with tropical Andean stream environments.
Feeding
Hemibrycon mikrostiktos has a trophic level of approximately 3.0, which places it among invertebrate-feeding predators and is consistent with an insectivorous diet typical of its genus and family. Hemibrycon species in general feed opportunistically on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — larval and adult insects, microcrustaceans, and similar prey — encountered in the water column and at the surface film.
No detailed stomach-content studies specific to H. mikrostiktos have been published in the accessible literature, and dietary data are therefore inferred from the trophic level estimate and from the well-documented feeding ecology of congeners. In an aquarium setting, similar small Hemibrycon and Stevardiinae characids are maintained successfully on high-quality small flake and pellet foods supplemented with live and frozen invertebrate prey such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and small bloodworm.
Mating
No specific mating observations have been published for Hemibrycon mikrostiktos. As a member of the subfamily Stevardiinae within Characidae, it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner, with courtship behaviour broadly similar to that documented in other small characids: males pursuing and displaying to receptive females among fine-leaved vegetation or in open water, without pair bond formation or territorial defence beyond brief spawning interactions. No parental care is expected.
Broadly within the Hemibrycon group and the Stevardiinae, spawning is opportunistic and not tied to tightly seasonally constrained breeding seasons under captive conditions, though in the wild, Andean stream fish often show spawning peaks associated with seasonal water-level and temperature changes. No aquarium breeding records for this species are documented in the available literature.
Breeding
Hemibrycon mikrostiktos has not been bred in the aquarium hobby to any documented extent, and no captive breeding records appear in the accessible literature. Based on the reproductive biology of the subfamily Stevardiinae and the genus Hemibrycon, the species would be expected to deposit small, adhesive to semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or substrate debris following open-water courtship chasing. Parental care is not expected, and adults would likely consume unguarded eggs and fry.
For aquarists attempting to spawn the species, protocols developed for similarly sized, undemanding Stevardiinae characids would represent a starting point: a slightly cooler, well-oxygenated, softly lit breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop, separation of adults after spawning, and small first foods for larvae. Given the species' very limited representation in the trade, captive breeding experience with it is essentially undocumented.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon mikrostiktos is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely, if ever, encountered in the ornamental trade. No dedicated husbandry literature exists for the species, and practical care guidelines must be extrapolated from the care of congeners and from the general biology of small sub-Andean Stevardiinae characids. Based on these analogues, it would be expected to do best in a well-filtered, moderately oxygenated aquarium with some current, soft to moderately hard water in the range typical of Andean foothill streams, and tropical temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius.
As a small characid of around 1.5 in SL, it would be suited to a community of peaceful, similarly sized fish and should be kept in a shoal of several individuals to elicit natural behaviour and minimise stress. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and subdued or dappled lighting would approximate its forest-stream habitat. The species' small size and expected peaceful temperament make it a manageable aquarium subject should it become available, but it remains a scientific specimen rather than a hobby fish at present.
Conservation
Hemibrycon mikrostiktos is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in April 2014. The assessment was carried out by Ericka Correa and Hernán Ortega Torres of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM-MHN). The LC listing reflects the absence of evidence of rapid population decline rather than demonstrated abundance — the species has a restricted known range in the Río Aguaytía drainage of upper Ucayali, Peru, and no conservation measures are in place for it. It does not occur within protected areas.
The broader context is one of data limitation: H. mikrostiktos is known only from the material examined in its original description, and survey coverage of the Río Aguaytía and adjacent sub-Andean streams in Peru remains incomplete. The species' narrow distribution and the pressures affecting Andean foothill streams — including logging, agriculture, and artisanal gold mining — mean that the LC status should be interpreted cautiously rather than as evidence of security. Ongoing ichthyological survey work in the Ucayali headwaters will be important to track whether its range is as restricted as currently known.
