Taxonomy & naming
Hemibrycon palomae was described by César Román-Valencia, Carlos A. García-Alzate, Raúl Ruiz-C., and Donald C. Taphorn in 2010 from specimens collected in La Paloma and La Siria Creeks, tributaries of the Roble River within the La Vieja River basin, itself part of the upper Cauca–Magdalena drainage of Colombia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hemibrycon palomae Román-Valencia, García-Alzate, Ruiz-C. & Taphorn, 2010; the authority is unparenthesized because the species was placed in Hemibrycon at the time of description and has not since been transferred.
The genus Hemibrycon Günther, 1864 belongs to the tribe Stevardiinae within the family Characidae, a hyperdiverse assemblage of mostly Neotropical fishes. Hemibrycon itself comprises more than 50 described species distributed across river systems from Panama south to Bolivia and Argentina, with particular richness on the slopes and inter-Andean valleys of the northern Andes. H. palomae is distinguished from its congeners principally by a high lateral-line scale count of 44–51 scales, compared with 34–44 in most related species — a meristic character that Román-Valencia and colleagues treated as diagnostic. It also occurs in sympatry with other Hemibrycon species in the Roble drainage, and the original description was framed in part as a clarification of local Hemibrycon diversity.
Morphology
Hemibrycon palomae reaches a recorded maximum of 3.5 in standard length (SL). Like other members of the genus it is a slender, fusiform characid with a moderately compressed body, a terminal mouth bearing small teeth, and the family's characteristic adipose fin positioned between the dorsal and the caudal. Coloration in preserved and live specimens is the typical silver-sided, dark-backed pattern seen across Hemibrycon: a bright silvery lateral band runs the length of the flank, the dorsal surface is darker olive to grey, and the fins are largely hyaline.
The most reliable diagnostic feature is the lateral-line scale count of 44–51, which falls consistently above the range documented for sympatric congeners. Detailed meristic data — fin-ray counts, scale rows above and below the lateral line — were presented in the original description and form the basis for species recognition within what is otherwise a morphologically conservative genus. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in published accounts for this species.
Habitat
Hemibrycon palomae is known from La Paloma and La Siria Creeks in the Roble River drainage, a headwater system of the La Vieja River within the upper Cauca–Magdalena basin of western Colombia. These are clear Andean foothill and montane streams, and FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, found along stream margins over sandy substrates in the mainstream channel.
Water conditions recorded for the type locality reflect the cool-to-warm, well-oxygenated streams typical of the Colombian Andes piedmont: FishBase gives a representative temperature of approximately 70 °F and a pH of 7.7 or above, consistent with streams draining mixed volcanic and sedimentary terrain. The Roble River system lies within the Valle del Cauca department; its streams are subject to agricultural and deforestation pressures affecting much of the upper Cauca catchment, though the species' status is currently assessed as Least Concern. No depth-range data specific to H. palomae are published.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to Hemibrycon palomae has been published. FishBase assigns the species a trophic level of 3.0, placing it squarely in the generalist insectivore–omnivore range that characterizes most small characids. Hemibrycon species studied elsewhere in their range feed primarily on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, adult insects fallen to the surface, and small crustaceans — supplemented by plant material and organic detritus where invertebrate prey is seasonally scarce.
In streams of the upper Cauca drainage, invertebrate drift tends to peak during the wet season, and shoaling characids like Hemibrycon are well placed to exploit surface-borne items along the stream margin, the microhabitat where H. palomae is reported. In an aquarium context, the genus is typically easy to feed, accepting live and frozen invertebrates, small pellets, and quality flake foods, though no specific husbandry records for H. palomae exist in the hobbyist literature.
Mating
No direct observations of mating behavior in Hemibrycon palomae have been reported. Across the family Characidae, mating follows a well-established pattern of open-water egg-scattering with no parental care, and the weight of comparative evidence places Hemibrycon firmly within this mode. In related Hemibrycon and Bryconamericus species, males typically pursue females through the water column, and spawning is a brief, active chase that deposits eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate in clear, moderately flowing water.
Sexual dimorphism in Hemibrycon is generally subtle; mature females tend to be deeper-bodied with a visibly distended abdomen when gravid, which is usually the most reliable field indicator of sex in fresh specimens. No seasonality data exist for H. palomae, but Andean stream characids at this latitude often spawn in association with the local rainy season when stream levels and temperatures shift.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Hemibrycon palomae appear in the aquarium literature, and the species is not known in the ornamental trade. On the basis of family- and genus-level biology, Hemibrycon palomae would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern universal in Characidae: adults scatter small, non-adhesive or lightly adhesive eggs broadly through the spawning environment, after which neither parent takes any further interest in the eggs or larvae.
In characids generally, eggs develop over a matter of days at tropical stream temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming shortly after hatching. Rearing fry through the first days is the bottleneck in most small characid breeding attempts, as the larvae are tiny and require correspondingly minute first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry preparations — before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. No specific incubation times or fry-rearing data are available for this species; the above is inferred from closely related taxa.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon palomae is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unknown in the commercial ornamental trade. It is a specialized-fauna fish of Andean foothill streams, and no husbandry guidance specific to the species appears in hobbyist sources. Aquarists working with Colombian stream tetras of the genus Hemibrycon typically house them in well-oxygenated, clear-water aquaria with moderate flow, a temperature in the upper teens to low 20s Celsius reflecting the cool upland habitats, and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Given its recorded habitat along stream margins over sandy substrates, a setup with a sandy or fine-gravel bed, some current, and open mid-water swimming space would be a logical starting point. Like most small stream characids, Hemibrycon species in general are shoaling fish that should be kept in groups; social isolation produces stress and abnormal behavior. All of the above is extrapolated from genus-level knowledge; verified data for H. palomae specifically are absent from the published and hobbyist record.
Conservation
Hemibrycon palomae was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red List in 2014, with the evaluation conducted by Paula Sanchez-Duarte of the Instituto Alexander von Humboldt. The species is endemic to Colombia. Its restricted range within the Roble River drainage of the upper Cauca basin means that it is inherently vulnerable to localized pressures — deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water abstraction are the most pervasive threats to streams in the Valle del Cauca region — but no population-level data sufficient to trigger an elevated threat category were available at the time of assessment.
The Colombia Andes piedmont is one of the world's most biodiverse and also most threatened freshwater regions, and many small characid species with restricted ranges remain poorly documented. Hemibrycon palomae has no economic importance in fisheries or the ornamental trade, so conservation attention for the species depends entirely on the broader protection of Andean foothill stream ecosystems. Continued monitoring of the Roble drainage and allied upper Cauca tributaries would be needed to detect any future decline.
