Taxonomy & naming
Hemibrycon quindos was described by Román-Valencia and Arcila-Mesa in 2010 as one of five new Hemibrycon species from the Río Magdalena basin of Colombia. The type series comprised 66 specimens collected from the Río Quindío, a clear-water stream in the upper Cauca drainage. The valid name, as maintained by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hemibrycon quindos Román-Valencia & Arcila-Mesa, 2010.
The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the large family Characidae and is distributed across Andean and sub-Andean river systems in South America, particularly in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. These are small, laterally compressed tetras that superficially resemble the better-known Bryconamericus, from which they are distinguished by a combination of osteological and morphometric characters. The genus has been subject to ongoing revision, and the 2010 paper that named H. quindos represented a significant contribution to understanding Hemibrycon diversity in the Magdalena and Cauca systems.
The specific epithet quindos refers to the Río Quindío, the type locality stream, in the Quindío department of central Colombia.
Morphology
Hemibrycon quindos is a small, slender characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like other members of the genus it has the typical tetra body plan: laterally compressed, fusiform, with a forked tail and the adipose fin characteristic of most characins.
The diagnostic character separating H. quindos from related Hemibrycon species is a cartilaginous protuberance on the anal-fin rays of males — a sexual dimorphism visible in preserved specimens and noted by the authors of the original description. This structure has been used to distinguish the species in the context of the Colombian Hemibrycon assemblage. Beyond this character, detailed published meristic data for H. quindos in the accessible literature is limited; the species is assigned to the genus on the basis of the full suite of Hemibrycon synapomorphies examined in the original study.
Habitat
The type locality of Hemibrycon quindos is the Río Quindío in the upper Cauca River drainage, Quindío department, Colombia. The stream at the collection site was described as clear water, approximately 16–20 ft wide, with a substrate of stone, sand, and decaying organic material — a clean, moderate-gradient Andean foothill stream typical of the western cordillera.
FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, occurring in tropical conditions. No water chemistry measurements specific to H. quindos localities have been published in the accessible literature, but streams of this type in the Andean foothills of Colombia generally run cool to warm (reflecting elevation), moderately soft to moderately hard, and close to neutral in pH, with good oxygen levels from flow and turbulence. The species' range appears to be confined to the Río Quindío basin within the upper Cauca system.
Feeding
No published dietary study specific to Hemibrycon quindos is available. The genus Hemibrycon, like most small characids, is understood to be broadly omnivorous, exploiting the invertebrate and plant material available in Andean stream habitats. Congeners and ecologically similar characins of the region take small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects, worms, and plant matter, with the balance shifting according to habitat and season.
In an aquarium context, H. quindos would be expected to accept a wide range of small foods — quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and live foods where available. Given the species' small size and the typical feeding habits of the genus, fine-grained foods and small portions suit it better than large pellets. Data on wild feeding preferences remains sparse.
Mating
No specific breeding observations for Hemibrycon quindos have been published. Based on what is known of the genus and the broader family Characidae, the species is expected to follow the typical small characid reproductive pattern: egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care. Males likely court females through active chasing and display behaviour, with spawning occurring among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over sandy substrates in stream habitats.
The cartilaginous protuberance on the male anal fin, noted in the original description, is a secondary sexual character whose functional role has not been described in the literature, but such characters in other small characids have been interpreted in the context of spawning behaviour and mate recognition.
Breeding
Hemibrycon quindos has not been documented in the aquarium hobby, and no captive breeding records are available. By analogy with other small Hemibrycon and related characids, breeding in captivity would likely involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with the female releasing adhesive eggs that the adults make no effort to guard. Removing the spawning medium or transferring eggs to a separate rearing container would be necessary to prevent predation by the parents.
Incubation period and fry requirements are unknown for this species. Aquarists working with comparable small Andean characids typically offer rotifers and infusoria as first foods, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp as fry grow. Given the species' near-absence from the trade, captive breeding data remains entirely lacking.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon quindos is not currently established in the aquarium hobby, and captive husbandry information is effectively nonexistent. Based on its origin in clear, well-oxygenated Andean foothill streams, it would likely require good water quality, moderate current, and well-filtered, clean conditions. The small adult size of around 2 in SL suggests it could be accommodated in a modestly sized aquarium, but the absence of hobby experience means specific tank-size or compatibility recommendations cannot be made with confidence.
Should the species become available, an Andean stream biotope with clean water, smooth stones, and moderate flow would be a reasonable starting point. Its small size would make it vulnerable to larger or more aggressive tankmates, and it would probably do best in a species tank or with similarly sized, peaceful companions.
Conservation
Hemibrycon quindos is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 10 October 2014. The Data Deficient designation reflects an absence of adequate information to make a direct or indirect assessment of its extinction risk — not a conclusion that the species is secure, but that too little is known about its distribution, population size, and ecological requirements to categorise it.
The species is known from the Río Quindío basin in the upper Cauca drainage of Colombia, a region subject to ongoing agricultural and land-use pressure typical of Andean foothills in the coffee-growing departments. Whether H. quindos has a broader distribution within the Magdalena–Cauca system or is genuinely restricted to a small area remains unclear from published data. Surveys to establish its actual range, abundance, and habitat condition would be the prerequisite for a meaningful threat assessment.
