Hemibrycon rafaelensis is a small characid tetra described in 2008 from the Cauca River drainage of southwestern Colombia, where it occupies fast-flowing mountain streams within a narrow endemic range. Like other members of the genus Hemibrycon — a diverse assemblage of roughly three dozen stream tetras spread across Central and South America — it is a slender, silver-bodied fish adapted to cool, well-oxygenated highland water. It has not been assessed by the IUCN and remains virtually unknown in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon rafaelensis was described by Román-Valencia and Arcila-Mesa in 2008. The type locality is the Río Guachicono or an associated tributary within the Cauca River drainage of Colombia. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Hemibrycon rafaelensis Román-Valencia & Arcila-Mesa, 2008; since the species was placed in Hemibrycon at description and remains there, the authority is not parenthesised.

The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses roughly 30 or more species of small stream tetras distributed from Central America through much of South America. Species in this genus are most diverse in the Andean foothills and inter-Andean valleys of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, where different stream systems have been colonised by distinct endemic species. Hemibrycon rafaelensis is one of several Colombian endemics in the genus; its specific epithet refers to the locality area associated with the type collection.

Morphology

Hemibrycon rafaelensis is a small, slender-bodied characid typical of the genus. Members of Hemibrycon generally reach under 2.5 in standard length, and H. rafaelensis falls within that range, though precise published size data for this species are sparse. The body is laterally compressed and fusiform — well-suited to life in moving water — with the silvery flanks and dark lateral stripe common to many rheophilic characids.

As in other Hemibrycon, the fins are relatively small and the overall build is streamlined rather than deep-bodied. Sexual dimorphism in the genus is generally subtle externally, with gravid females appearing heavier-bodied than males; detailed morphological data specific to H. rafaelensis are limited in the available literature.

Habitat

Hemibrycon rafaelensis is known from the Cauca River drainage of southwestern Colombia, with the type locality in or near the Río Guachicono, a tributary system draining Andean slopes into the upper Cauca. This places the species in a highland stream environment characterised by cool temperatures, high dissolved oxygen, and relatively fast current over rocky substrates.

Water conditions in Hemibrycon habitat in this region are typically cool and near-neutral: temperatures in the range of approximately 64–72 °F are documented for Hemibrycon species at comparable elevations in the Colombian Andes, with pH close to neutral (around 6.5–7.5) and moderate softness reflecting granite and sedimentary catchments. The Cauca drainage is a major Andean river system; its upper reaches and tributaries support a distinct highland ichthyofauna, and narrow-range endemics like H. rafaelensis reflect the stream-isolation typical of Andean slope fish communities.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Hemibrycon rafaelensis has been published. The genus as a whole is broadly insectivorous and omnivorous, taking aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, small crustaceans, insects falling onto the water surface, algae, and plant detritus. The fast-flowing, well-lit highland streams inhabited by H. rafaelensis support diverse invertebrate communities on which such opportunistic feeders readily depend.

In the aquarium, closely related Hemibrycon species accept a wide variety of small prepared and live foods — fine flake, micro-pellets, frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and Cyclops — and there is no reason to expect H. rafaelensis to differ substantially. A varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrate items is likely to support best condition.

Mating

No published mating observations exist for Hemibrycon rafaelensis specifically. Based on the biology of congeners, the genus is expected to follow the characid norm of open, egg-scattering spawning without parental investment. Males likely display to females with fin extension and lateral posturing; spawning would occur over substrate or among fine-leaved vegetation, with eggs scattered and abandoned.

In the highland streams where this species lives, seasonal cues such as increased flow, slight temperature drops associated with Andean rainfall cycles, and photoperiod shifts may trigger spawning runs, as is documented for other stream characids. No aquarium breeding data are available for this species.

Breeding

Hemibrycon rafaelensis has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions. By analogy with other Hemibrycon and with stream-dwelling characids generally, the expected reproductive mode is egg-scattering over fine substrate or vegetation, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs receiving no parental care. Adults should be regarded as potential egg predators, as is standard for the family.

For any aquarist who might work with this species, the general approach used for cool-water characids would apply: condition adults on live and varied foods, provide a separate spawning vessel with fine plants or mops, cool the water slightly to simulate Andean stream conditions, and remove parents promptly after spawning. Fry would be expected to be small and initially require infusoria or commercially prepared fry foods. These are inferences from the genus; no specific breeding record for H. rafaelensis is confirmed.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon rafaelensis is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is not currently kept by hobbyists to any documented degree. Its highland Colombian range, cool preferred temperatures, and status as a narrow endemic mean it is unlikely to appear in commerce under normal circumstances. Seriously Fish does not carry a profile for this species, and no hobbyist literature describes its maintenance.

Were specimens to become available, the requirements of comparable highland stream tetras would serve as a guide: a well-oxygenated, moderately cool aquarium (around 64–72 °F) with gentle to moderate current, near-neutral water chemistry, and a mixed diet of small live or frozen invertebrates and quality prepared foods. The species would likely do best in a shoal with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. Its small size and stream origins suggest it would be sensitive to low dissolved oxygen and organic loading.

Conservation

Hemibrycon rafaelensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a narrow endemic from a single tributary system within the Cauca River drainage of Colombia, it shares the vulnerability inherent to all species with restricted ranges: any significant degradation of the Río Guachicono catchment or connected waters could affect the entire known range.

The Cauca River basin faces ongoing pressures from agriculture, hydroelectric development, deforestation of Andean watersheds, and water extraction, all of which can alter the cool, well-oxygenated stream conditions on which highland characids depend. No species-specific conservation measures are known. Given its restricted distribution and the pressures on Colombian Andean river systems, a formal IUCN assessment would be warranted to determine whether this species meets threatened-category thresholds.
