Taxonomy & naming
Hemibrycon sanjuanensis was described by Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn, and García-Alzate in 2014, based on specimens collected from the upper San Juan River drainage, Pacific versant, Colombia. The description was published in ZooKeys (volume 454, pages 109–125). The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) is Hemibrycon sanjuanensis Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn & García-Alzate, 2014.
The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes. Species of Hemibrycon are typically slender, silvery characids found in Andean and sub-Andean drainages from Venezuela south to Bolivia and Argentina. They are distinguished from allied genera by a combination of scale and fin-ray counts, dentition, and pigmentation characters. H. sanjuanensis is distinguished from its congeners by a circular to oblong humeral spot positioned two scales posterior to the opercle, melanophores concentrated on scale margins, and six teeth in the outer premaxillary row arranged in a straight line — characters described in the original account by Román-Valencia and colleagues.
The specific epithet sanjuanensis is a toponym referencing the San Juan River (Río San Juan), the drainage from which type material was obtained.
Morphology
Hemibrycon sanjuanensis is a small, elongate characid reaching a maximum recorded total length of approximately 3.5 in SL (standard length). The body is typical for the genus — fusiform, laterally compressed, and moderately streamlined, suited to life in currents.
Fin-ray formula data from the original description and FishBase field guide record anal-fin rays of iii–iv plus 24–30, and 10–11 dorsal-fin rays, values consistent with other small Hemibrycon. The humeral spot — circular to oblong, situated two scales behind the opercle — is a key diagnostic character separating this species from close congeners. Melanophores are concentrated along scale margins, giving a faintly cross-hatched or reticulate appearance to the body flanks.
In life, colouration is typical of the genus: a silvery to pale yellowish body with a distinct dark lateral stripe along the posterior body, the humeral spot providing an anterior anchor to that pigment pattern. Data on sexual colour differences or secondary sexual characters are sparse for this species.
Habitat
Hemibrycon sanjuanensis is known from the upper San Juan River basin and specifically the Tatamá River drainage — a Pacific-versant system in the western cordillera of Colombia. The species occupies streams characterised by rapid, clear water, rocky and sandy substrates, and high water transparency; the habitat description in the original account emphasises fast-flowing conditions as typical.
FishBase records depth from 0–10 ft and water parameters spanning a temperature range of 63–72 °F, pH 6.3–7.67 — relatively cool, slightly acid to near-neutral conditions consistent with Andean highland streams. The species is described as benthopelagic, associating with the substrate in the lower and middle water column. Its stream community includes syntopic species such as Bryconamericus emperador, Astroblepus sp., Pimelodella sp., and Characidium sp., indicating a high-gradient, oxygen-rich stream habitat typical of the western Andes.
Feeding
Hemibrycon sanjuanensis is insectivorous. FishBase data records the diet as comprising adult and larval insects, nematodes, isopods, and arthropod fragments — a diet consistent with a benthopelagic stream fish foraging on drift and benthic invertebrates in fast-flowing, highly oxygenated mountain streams.
This diet profile is broadly typical of Hemibrycon species generally, which tend to be opportunistic predators on invertebrate prey available in the current. No aquarium feeding records exist for this species in the published literature, but analogous highland characids typically accept live and frozen invertebrate-based foods readily in captivity.
Mating
No specific mating observations have been published for Hemibrycon sanjuanensis. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus and family Characidae broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care. Characids of this type typically spawn in association with submerged vegetation, root mats, or gravel substrates in flowing water, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are deposited and left to develop without adult attendance.
In related Hemibrycon and allied highland characids, males may display courtship behaviour involving lateral presentations to females, but no formal descriptions of courtship behaviour exist for this species. Reproductive seasonality likely correlates with hydrological and thermal cycles in the Andean drainage, but no data on spawning season or triggers have been published.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity has not been documented for Hemibrycon sanjuanensis in the available literature, and no information on egg number, incubation period, or larval development has been published for this species specifically. By analogy with other characids of similar ecology and body size, eggs would be expected to be small, non-adhesive to semi-adhesive, and to hatch within a few days at appropriate temperatures, with no parental care provided after spawning.
Any aquarist wishing to attempt breeding this species would likely follow protocols for other small Andean characids: cool, well-oxygenated, soft to moderately hard water; fine-leaved plants or a spawning mesh to collect falling eggs; separation of adults post-spawning; and small first foods for the fry. Given the species' apparent rarity in the hobby, specific experience is not documented.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon sanjuanensis is an extreme rarity in the aquarium hobby and is not available through normal retail channels. Its care requirements can be inferred from its wild ecology: cool, clear, well-oxygenated water in the range of 63–72 °F, slightly acid to near-neutral pH (6.3–7.7), and good flow replicating the fast-running Andean streams it inhabits naturally.
As a small schooling characid it would best be kept in groups, with tankmates tolerant of cooler temperatures and brisk water movement. High filtration and surface agitation to maintain oxygen levels are important given the cold, fast-water origins of the species. Diet should emphasise small invertebrate-based foods — live or frozen Daphnia, bloodworm, small insects, and similar items reflecting the natural insectivorous diet. Given the absence of captive records and the species' restricted range in a little-collected Pacific-versant river system, aquarists are unlikely to encounter this fish outside specialist scientific or conservation collections.
Conservation
Hemibrycon sanjuanensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species is known from the upper San Juan River basin and Tatamá River drainage in Colombia — a geographically restricted range on the Pacific versant of the western Andes. The San Juan River basin has experienced pressures including deforestation, artisanal mining (particularly gold mining, which is widespread in the Colombian Pacific region), and agricultural runoff, all of which degrade stream clarity and substrate quality in exactly the kinds of highland streams this species requires.
The apparent endemism of H. sanjuanensis to a limited portion of a single river system, combined with threats to highland stream habitats in western Colombia, suggests that a formal IUCN assessment would be warranted. Until such an assessment is completed, the conservation status remains formally unknown. No captive population is known to exist as a safety net.
