Taxonomy & naming
Hemibrycon santamartae was described by Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., García-Alzate, and Taphorn, with the original description published in the Revista de investigaciones Universidad del Quindio (2009–2010). The species epithet refers to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the isolated coastal massif in northern Colombia from whose drainages the type material was collected. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hemibrycon santamartae Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., García-Alzate & Taphorn, 2010.
The genus Hemibrycon Günther, 1864 belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a diverse group of small, slender characins distributed across river systems of the Andes and adjacent lowlands from Venezuela south through Ecuador. Some classifications have placed certain Hemibrycon and allied species within Stevardiidae, and FishBase currently lists the species under that family; however the Catalog of Fishes placement and the broad ichthyological literature treat Characidae as the encompassing family assignment used here. Relationships within Hemibrycon are the subject of ongoing revision, and the Santa Marta population's placement within the genus was based on the distinctive combination of meristic and morphological characters documented at the time of description.
Morphology
Hemibrycon santamartae is a small, slender characid with the typical body form of the genus: laterally compressed, elongate, with a relatively pointed snout and large eyes. Precise size data for this species are sparse; related Hemibrycon species typically reach 2–3 in standard length (SL), and this species is likely of similar dimensions, though published measurements from the type series have not been widely reproduced in secondary sources.
The genus is characterised by the presence of a small adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and dentition consisting of multicuspid teeth in both jaws. Sexual dimorphism in external colour is modest in most Hemibrycon, with ripe females tending to a more rounded abdomen. Beyond these generalities, detailed morphological descriptions of H. santamartae remain in the original primary literature; the account here is drawn from what can be confirmed from the FishBase summary and the genus-level literature, and further specimen-based data would be needed to characterise the species more precisely.
Habitat

This makes H. santamartae part of an ichthyofauna associated with one of the world's most isolated mountain massifs, a region known for high levels of endemism across multiple animal groups.
The Ranchería system encompasses a range of altitude zones, from the high-elevation streams of the Santa Marta massif down through foothills and seasonally dry lowland reaches. Specific microhabitat data for H. santamartae have not been published in widely available sources; like most Hemibrycon it is presumed to inhabit clear to slightly turbid, running-water environments — rocky streams and riffles with moderate current — at suitable elevations within the drainage. Feeding
Hemibrycon species are generally considered opportunistic omnivores, feeding on small invertebrates, organic detritus, algae, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface. No stomach-content analysis specific to H. santamartae has been located in available sources. In captivity, Hemibrycon would be expected to accept most small prepared and live foods, though this species is not known to be held in the aquarium hobby.
Mating
No primary observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Hemibrycon santamartae have been published in accessible literature. Hemibrycon species are egg-scatterers with no parental care, consistent with the general reproductive strategy of small characids: spawning involves the broadcast release of adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or gravel substrates in flowing water, with neither parent guarding the clutch.
Seasonal breeding linked to water temperature and rainfall cycles is the probable pattern for a stream-dwelling Andean characid, but no specific data on spawning periodicity or triggers have been documented for this species. The combination of its restricted range and Data Deficient status reflects in part the absence of even basic ecological observation in the field since description.
Breeding
Hemibrycon santamartae is not established in the aquarium hobby and no captive-breeding records have been located. Based on the biology of other Hemibrycon and related stream tetras, breeding would follow the egg-scattering mode typical of the subfamily: eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation or over gravel in flowing, well-oxygenated water, with incubation times and fry development likely resembling other small Andean characins.
In the absence of captive experience, standard small-tetra protocols — a separate spawning tank with gentle current, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, slightly acid to neutral water, and removal of adults after spawning — represent the logical starting framework should captive material ever become available. The fry of comparable species are typically tiny at hatching and require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial micro-fry preparations before graduating to nauplii.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon santamartae is not recorded as an aquarium fish. Its restricted distribution within a single Colombian river system, combined with the limited ichthyological attention it has received since description, means it has not entered the ornamental trade. Nothing in the literature describes its temperament, care requirements, or suitability for captivity from direct experience.
Should specimens become available, the care baseline for a small Andean stream tetra would apply: cool to moderate tropical temperatures (reflecting its highland/piedmont origins), clean and well-oxygenated water with moderate current, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality prepared foods. As with other modestly sized, peaceful characids, a group of six or more individuals would be the natural social unit.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hemibrycon santamartae as Data Deficient (DD) on 10 October 2014. The Data Deficient designation does not mean the species faces no threat; it means insufficient information exists to assign it confidently to a threat category. Given its endemism to the Ranchería River drainage — a catchment that faces pressures from agriculture, water extraction, and land-use change in one of Colombia's more arid coastal regions — the lack of survey data is itself a conservation concern.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is recognised as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, and its river systems harbour numerous endemic fish species many of which are insufficiently studied. A reassessment of H. santamartae would require updated field surveys establishing its current distribution, population abundance, and habitat condition within the Ranchería system. Until such data exist, precautionary attention to the health of the Ranchería drainage serves the needs of this and many other endemic species of the massif.
