Hemibrycon sierraensis is a slender, fast-water characid discovered in the Caribbean-slope streams of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia — the world's highest coastal mountain range. Described in 2015 from the Río Gaira near Minca, it is distinguished in life by a vivid red adipose fin and a vertically elongate humeral spot reaching well below the lateral line. The species has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, but its small, fragmented range in a biodiversity hotspot makes conservation attention warranted.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon sierraensis was formally described by Carlos A. García-Alzate, César Román-Valencia, and Donald C. Taphorn in 2015, based on material collected from the Río Gaira at Minca in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. The description appeared in Cuadernos de Investigación UNED, volume 7, issue 1. The type locality sits at approximately 11°08'37.8"N, 74°07'08.1"W, at an elevation of 394 ft in a Caribbean-draining watershed.

The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the family Characidae in the broad sense. FishBase now lists the species under the family Stevardiidae following revisions to the higher classification of the clade, but Catalog of Fishes remains the nomenclatural authority for the valid name; the top-level family field used here follows the original description's placement. Hemibrycon is a diverse South American genus of slender, active stream tetras, and H. sierraensis is distinguished from its closest relative in the region, H. santamartae, by a lower supraneurals count (6–7 vs. 8) and subtle meristic differences in the anal-fin ray count and vertebral formula.

Morphology

Hemibrycon sierraensis is a moderately elongate characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. The body is streamlined and well adapted for life in swift current. Key diagnostic characters from the original description include 40–41 vertebrae, an anal-fin ray count of iii/26–27, and 6–7 supraneurals.

The most striking feature in live specimens is the adipose fin, which is iridescent red. This colouration fades to dark brown in alcohol-preserved material, so the trait is invisible in the type specimens of many museum descriptions; it is an important field character for identification. A further diagnostic feature is the humeral spot: vertically elongate, it extends downward 3–4 scale rows below the lateral line, broader than in related species. In overall body shape and scale pattern, the species resembles other members of the genus but can be separated from sympatric or nearby congeners by the combination of these meristic and colour characters.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Caribbean-draining streams of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the most isolated mountain massifs in South America. The type locality on the Río Gaira lies beneath the Minca bridge at 394 ft elevation. The original description characterises the habitat as clear streams with rapid current, rocky and sandy substrates, and high water transparency — conditions typical of montane oligotrophic systems fed by precipitation on the steep northern slopes of the Sierra.

Water chemistry at the type locality was recorded as near-neutral pH with high dissolved oxygen, consistent with fast, well-aerated streams at that elevation. The drainage system falls within the Caribbean lowland ecoregion of Colombia, and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot owing to its extreme elevational gradient and high degree of endemism.

Feeding

Based on stomach-content data reported in the original description, Hemibrycon sierraensis is an omnivore. Items recorded include filamentous algae and plant fragments alongside animal prey such as Trichoptera (caddisfly) larvae and Formicidae (ants). This diet reflects opportunistic feeding across the benthic and surface zones of its fast-flowing stream habitat, where invertebrate drift and algae scraped from rocks are the main energy sources.

In captivity the species has not been widely kept, but congeners and related stream tetras adapt readily to standard aquarium foods — small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp, supplemented with a quality micro-pellet or flake. A diet that includes some vegetable or algal component would align with the natural omnivory documented from the wild.

Mating

No direct observations of mating behaviour for Hemibrycon sierraensis have been published. As with other Hemibrycon species and characids generally, the mating system is expected to be open, non-territorial egg-scattering with no parental care.

Sexual dimorphism is documented in the original description: males bear hooks on the rays of the anal, pelvic, and pectoral fins. Such fin hooks are a widespread feature in characid males and are thought to facilitate contact between the sexes during the brief spawning embrace. Spawning is likely triggered in nature by seasonal hydrological cues — rising water level or temperature shifts associated with the rainy season — and probably occurs over submerged vegetation or fine-sediment substrates in marginal stream zones with reduced current.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Hemibrycon sierraensis has not been documented in the hobbyist or scientific literature to date. Based on the biology of close relatives in the genus, the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer that deposits small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, with no guarding of eggs or fry by either parent.

Should captive populations become available, a setup replicating the cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing conditions of its native streams would likely be most conducive to conditioning and spawning: soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water, strong flow and surface agitation, and live or frozen foods to bring fish into breeding condition. Fry of related species are typically small at hatching and require infusoria or rotifers as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon sierraensis is not currently available in the ornamental trade. It was described only in 2015 from a restricted range in Colombia, and no captive populations or commercial breeding lines appear to have been established. The species' habitat preferences — cool, clear, highly oxygenated fast-flowing streams — would demand correspondingly specific aquarium conditions, including strong filtration and flow, stable cool-to-room temperatures, and excellent water quality.

The vivid red adipose fin and clean, streamlined body would make it an attractive display fish if ever cultured for the hobby. Any specimens that enter the trade should be sourced with attention to origin, as wild collection from a geographically restricted population in a biodiversity hotspot raises conservation concerns. Congeners kept in specialised collections respond well to groups, require ample swimming space, and benefit from a varied diet of live, frozen, and dry foods.

Conservation

Hemibrycon sierraensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. FishBase records no formal evaluation, and a search of the IUCN database has not returned an entry for this species, confirming that it remains outside the assessed set at time of writing.

The species' conservation situation is potentially precarious. It is known from a small cluster of streams in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — a mountain range that, despite its status as a recognised biodiversity hotspot, faces ongoing pressures from agricultural encroachment, deforestation in the lower foothills, water extraction, and pollution from settlements. Stream species with restricted ranges in such landscapes are inherently vulnerable to local extirpation. An IUCN assessment would provide the baseline needed to guide any protective measures.
