Hemibrycon taeniurus — the mountain stream sardine of Trinidad — is a fast-water schooling tetra found at the base of rapids and waterfalls on the island's western slopes. Endemic to a single island with an extent of occurrence under 2,62 mi², it carries a Near Threatened assessment from the IUCN, pressed by industrial development, oil and gas extraction, agricultural expansion, and an invasive snail that is altering the streams it depends upon.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon taeniurus was described by Theodore Nicholas Gill in 1858, and the parenthetical authority reflects the fact that the species has since been placed in a genus other than the one in which Gill originally described it. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hemibrycon taeniurus (Gill, 1858). The species is a member of the genus Hemibrycon, a neotropical characid group of small, schooling river tetras distributed across river systems of northern South America and some Caribbean islands.

Recent systematic work has proposed reclassifying Hemibrycon and its relatives from Characidae into the family Stevardiidae, though Catalog of Fishes continues to list the group within the broader Characidae. The species epithet taeniurus derives from the Greek tainia (band or stripe) and oura (tail), referring to the banded tail marking that gives the fish its common name "bandtail tetra." The genus name Hemibrycon is from the Greek hemi (half) and bryko (to bite), an allusion to the dentition.

Morphology

Hemibrycon taeniurus is a slender, fusiform tetra showing the typical build of a stream-dwelling schooling characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in in males and 3 in in females — females attaining a noticeably larger body size, which is the reverse of the pattern seen in many display-driven tetras. Meristic characters as recorded for the species include 8 dorsal soft rays, 26–29 anal soft rays, 39–41 vertebrae, and 40–42 scales along the lateral line.

The body is silver and elongate, with the lateral line well developed as expected for a fish occupying turbulent water. The caudal fin carries the band marking that the specific epithet and common name reference. The fish is described as benthopelagic in character, occupying the water column in the lower reaches of rapids and the foot of waterfalls, and its streamlined form suits this rheophilic habit. No external sexual characters beyond size have been noted in the literature beyond the female's larger maximum length.

Habitat

Hemibrycon taeniurus is endemic to Trinidad and reaches its highest abundances in the island's western region. It occupies a broad range of freshwater habitats within that distribution: clear, fast-flowing highland streams — especially the base of rapids and waterfalls — and also muddier, slower lowland streams including the Caparo and Ortoire river systems. This dual-habitat use across a gradient from swift upland water to sluggish lowland channels indicates environmental tolerance, even as the species remains geographically restricted to a single island.

The IUCN assessment records the total extent of occurrence at approximately 2,7 mi². Population trend is unknown, though the species is described as locally abundant. Sympatric fishes in Trinidad's streams include the silver hatchet fish, pui pui, and silver dollar tetra, species with overlapping rheophilic or broadly freshwater habits.

Feeding

Hemibrycon taeniurus is an opportunistic omnivore with a diet documented to include insects, mosquito larvae, small fish, invertebrates, algae, and plant material. The UWI Trinidad ecology guide records benthopelagic and surface feeding behaviour, consistent with the species' position in the water column at the base of rapids. The insect and larval component reflects the high invertebrate productivity of well-oxygenated highland streams.

In the aquarium, members of the genus accept a wide range of foods. Small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae provide a natural diet analogue and support condition. Prepared foods including flake and small granules are taken readily. Offering varied rations with a live or frozen component supports health and natural behaviour in a species accustomed to picking insects from turbulent water.

Mating

No detailed account of wild courtship behaviour has been published for Hemibrycon taeniurus. As a member of Characidae, the species is presumed to follow the egg-scattering open-water or plant-spawning reproductive strategy typical of the family: males pursuing or displaying to females, with spawning taking place over fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots, or gravel, and no pair bond forming beyond the act of spawning.

The life span of H. taeniurus in the wild is recorded at approximately two years, which is short for a tetra and suggests early reproductive maturity and multiple spawning seasons within a brief adult life. Reproductive periodicity has not been formally documented. The locally abundant populations in suitable Trinidad streams imply that recruitment is reliable where habitat remains intact.

Breeding

Formal breeding documentation for Hemibrycon taeniurus in captivity is sparse. As a characid, it is expected to follow the guild pattern of egg-scattering with no parental care: adults scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning substrate, and both eggs and fry are at risk from the adults if not separated. Eggs in comparable Characidae typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and fry are free-swimming within a few days of hatching.

Breeding attempts in captivity would be aided by soft, slightly acidic water, a temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, live or frozen conditioning foods, and dense fine-leaved planting or spawning mops to receive the eggs. Removing eggs or adults after spawning is standard practice for the family. The species' two-year life cycle in the wild suggests captive specimens would come into breeding condition relatively quickly.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon taeniurus remains a rarity in the aquarium hobby outside of Trinidad, where it is a locally familiar fish. Its characteristics — a schooling habit, modest size (females to about 3 in SL), tolerance of a range of water conditions, and insectivorous diet — would suit a planted community aquarium with moderate to good water movement, reflecting the rheophilic element of its natural habitat at the base of rapids.

A group of six or more individuals would display natural schooling behaviour. Water current provided by a powerhead or spray bar, along with clean, well-oxygenated water, would approximate conditions at the base of Trinidad's highland streams. The species' tolerance of muddier lowland streams in the wild suggests it is not exacting about water chemistry. Compatible tankmates would be similarly sized, peaceful schooling fish. Availability is the main barrier; the species is not a standard import and would need to be sourced from specialist breeders or hobbyists with connections to Trinidad.

Conservation

Hemibrycon taeniurus is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1b(iii), the assessment having been conducted by T.J. Lyons and published in 2021 with a 2020 assessment date. The NT listing reflects an extent of occurrence of approximately 2,7 mi² — below the threshold for Vulnerable under criterion B1 if decline could be demonstrated — combined with documented ongoing habitat degradation.

Identified threats include industrial development, oil and gas drilling, and agricultural expansion across Trinidad's freshwater catchments. The IUCN assessment also flags the invasive apple snail Tarebia granifera as a biological threat altering benthic conditions in affected streams. Although the species is described as locally abundant, its endemism to a single island with a small geographic footprint means that broad-scale threats to Trinidad's freshwater systems pose disproportionate risk. The population trend is currently unknown.
