A slender, fast-moving characid of high-altitude Andean rivers, Hemibrycon tridens is an endemic of the Apurímac and Ucayali drainage basins of southeastern Peru, where it navigates cool, swift headwaters between 800 and 3000 metres elevation. Described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922 from the Apurímac River near Uruhuasi, it belongs to a cis-Andean genus of sleek, silver-flanked tetras whose name alludes to a distinctive dental formula. Despite its restricted distribution it has been assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with populations stable in river reaches that remain well forested.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon tridens was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922, with the type locality recorded as the Apurímac River at Uruhuasi in the Apurímac Department of southeastern Peru. The valid name, confirmed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hemibrycon tridens Eigenmann, 1922, placed in the family Characidae. The Catalog of Fishes treats the genus Hemibrycon as belonging to the subfamily Hemibrycona within the broader Characidae, although some classification schemes have grouped related genera in the family Stevardiinae or Stevardiidae; the top-level family assignment here follows Eschmeyer.

The genus Hemibrycon comprises a set of cis-Andean and sub-Andean characids ranging across the Pacific-draining and Atlantic-draining versants of the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia. A key taxonomic revision of cis-Andean Hemibrycon species by Bertaco and Malabarba (2010) refined species limits across the genus and provides important context for H. tridens within its congener assemblage. The species has not been involved in any recorded synonymy, and the 1922 name remains unchallenged.

Morphology

Hemibrycon tridens is a slender, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. Like other members of the genus, it has the streamlined, fusiform profile typical of rheophilic tetras adapted to moving water — a pointed snout, a forked tail, and a body that tapers cleanly toward both ends. The flanks are silvery, the scales reflecting light with a metallic sheen under natural illumination, and a faint darker lateral stripe may be present.

The species epithet tridens — from the Latin tri- (three) and dens (tooth) — is thought to refer to a distinctive dental character, pointing to three-cusped teeth as a diagnostic feature of this species or its closest relatives. Detailed meristic data for the species is sparse in the accessible literature, but the genus as a whole is characterised by a moderate number of lateral-line scales and a relatively small adipose fin, features common to most small Andean stream tetras.

Habitat

Hemibrycon tridens is endemic to Peru, occurring in the Apurímac and Ucayali river basins of the southeastern Andes. The IUCN assessment places its elevational range between approximately 800 and 3000 metres above sea level, making it one of the more upland members of its genus — a fish of montane and sub-montane Andean streams rather than lowland terra firme rivers.

At these altitudes the Apurímac and its tributaries run cool, clear, and fast, over rocky and gravelly substrates, with riparian forest providing shade and allochthonous food inputs. The IUCN notes that the lower portions of its range remain well forested, while the upper river valleys have historically been converted to agricultural plantations — a long-standing land use that predates the species' assessment rather than a novel emerging threat. The species is categorised as an inland-wetlands habitat specialist, dependent on the riverine freshwater systems of its Andean catchments.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies for Hemibrycon tridens are not available in the accessible literature, but the broader ecology of Hemibrycon in Andean stream habitats is reasonably well characterised. Species of the genus are generalised omnivores that exploit whatever food sources moving water delivers: aquatic invertebrates (particularly insect larvae), terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, small crustaceans, and opportunistic plant matter or detritus.

The swift current habitats occupied by H. tridens at altitude deliver a rich but unpredictable invertebrate drift, and the fish's streamlined form and active swimming style are consistent with a forager that intercepts drifting prey rather than picking at the substrate. In captivity, Hemibrycon species generally accept a broad range of prepared and live foods, although H. tridens is rarely encountered in the trade.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Hemibrycon tridens are known. By analogy with other small characids of similar ecology, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care — the reproductive strategy that predominates across Characidae. Males in breeding condition likely court females with lateral displays in the water column or near suitable spawning substrates, and spawning probably occurs over fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or along gravel runs where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs can settle.

Whether the species shows any seasonality in spawning tied to Andean rainfall patterns or temperature fluctuations at its elevational range has not been documented. The high-altitude stream systems it inhabits do experience marked seasonal hydrological variation, which in many stream characids correlates with reproductive timing.

Breeding

Hemibrycon tridens has not been reported as bred in captivity in the accessible literature, and its requirements in that regard are essentially unknown. The general reproductive biology of the genus Hemibrycon, and of small characids from montane Andean streams more broadly, suggests egg-scattering spawning over fine-leaved plants or gravel, with no parental care: adults would need to be separated from eggs to prevent predation, and fry would require very small initial foods.

The cooler temperatures of its natural habitat — consistent with high-altitude Andean streams — likely mean that this species, if ever maintained in captivity, would require temperatures below the tropical norm typical of lowland tetra species. Incubation periods and fry development rates at such temperatures are likely extended relative to lowland relatives. Data on clutch size, egg diameter, and development are absent from the available literature.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon tridens is occasionally noted as a species used in aquariums (FishBase records aquarium use), and its common name 'Jumping Tetra' points to the escape behaviour characteristic of many active, schooling stream tetras — a tank with a secure lid is essential for any Hemibrycon. Beyond these basic facts, reliable husbandry data for this particular species are not widely available.

Its high-altitude origins suggest it would prefer cooler water than is typical of most tetras in the trade — temperatures in the upper teens to low-to-mid 20s Celsius are a reasonable inference from its 2625–9843 ft elevational range, but confirmed aquarium-temperature data are absent. In common with other small Andean stream tetras, it would likely do best in soft, slightly acidic to neutral, well-oxygenated water with good current, kept in a school of six or more individuals. Any hobbyist encountering this species should treat published husbandry guidance with appropriate scepticism given how little confirmed data exist.

Conservation

Hemibrycon tridens is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2016 assessment). The assessment notes that the species is endemic to Peru, confined to the Apurímac and Ucayali basins. Population trend is considered stable. The primary documented pressure is historical agricultural conversion in the upper valleys of its range, particularly the establishment of plantations, which is treated as a long-standing land use rather than an escalating threat; the lower portions of its range, the IUCN notes, remain well forested.

No specific conservation actions are documented for this species. Its Least Concern status reflects the current absence of evidence of significant population decline rather than a large or expanding range — it remains a geographically restricted endemic of the Peruvian Andes, and any intensification of land use, water extraction, or pollution in its headwater catchments could shift its status. The species appears in commercial fisheries and aquarium collection to a minor degree (per FishBase), but these uses are not identified as threats in the current assessment.
