Taxonomy & naming
Hemibrycon virolinica was described by Román-Valencia and Arcila-Mesa in 2010 from specimens collected in the Virolin River, a tributary of the Cauca drainage in Cauca Department, Colombia. The type locality is within the Virolin River basin, and the species epithet directly references this river system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the authority for the valid name Hemibrycon virolinica Román-Valencia & Arcila-Mesa, 2010.
The genus Hemibrycon Günther, 1864 belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within Characidae and contains several dozen species distributed across swift foothill and montane streams of the Andes and their Pacific and Atlantic slope drainages. Species limits within Hemibrycon have historically been difficult to resolve, and the 2010 description brought the genus total closer to its current recognized count. H. virolinica is distinguishable from its congeners by a combination of meristic and morphometric characters detailed in the original description; no common name has been established for the species.
Morphology
Hemibrycon virolinica is a small, slender-bodied characid estimated to reach under 4 in standard length; precise maximum size data are sparse given that the species has not been the subject of extensive field surveys beyond the original description. The body plan follows the typical Hemibrycon template: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed form with a complete lateral line, large eyes suited to the clear-water streams it inhabits, and the small adipose fin characteristic of the family.
Coloration in preserved specimens — the basis for most published accounts — is generally silvery with a darker dorsal surface and a well-defined lateral stripe running from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle. Whether the species displays the yellow or reddish caudal and fin pigmentation seen in some Hemibrycon relatives is not documented in available literature. Data on live coloration and sexual dimorphism at the individual level remain sparse.
Habitat
The Virolin River is a tributary of the upper Cauca system in the Colombian Andes, and H. virolinica is known only from this drainage. Like other Hemibrycon species occupying Andean foothill streams, it almost certainly inhabits clear to lightly turbid, fast-flowing water with a rocky or gravel substrate and good dissolved oxygen. The Cauca region's stream environments typically feature water temperatures in the range of 68–79 °F, with soft to slightly acidic to neutral chemistry reflecting the igneous and metamorphic geology of the Andes.
The extreme geographic restriction of the species — a single river basin — defines its ecological profile as a micro-endemic. Such narrow endemism in Andean stream fish is not unusual; montane tributaries separated by watershed divides act as independent evolutionary theaters, and many Hemibrycon species are known from only one or a few adjacent drainages. The Virolin system's habitat quality directly determines the fate of the species.
Feeding
No published dietary study specific to Hemibrycon virolinica is available. Gut-content and ecological data for the genus more broadly indicate that Hemibrycon species are opportunistic omnivores in the stream environment, consuming small invertebrates (aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects falling to the surface, small crustaceans), algae, and plant material. This feeding mode is consistent with the fast, clear-water streams the genus typically inhabits, where drift feeding and active foraging along the substrate both occur.
In an aquarium context, any captive specimens of this species would be expected to accept the range of foods appropriate to a small active characid: live and frozen small invertebrates, quality fine-particle flake, and micro-pellets. No aquarium care records have been documented for this species in the literature reviewed.
Mating
No mating observations specific to Hemibrycon virolinica have been published. Based on the reproductive biology of Hemibrycon and the broader Stevardiinae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care. Spawning likely occurs in association with submerged vegetation or among gravels in flowing water, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are deposited and left to develop unattended.
Male–female differentiation in the genus may involve differences in body depth, fullness of the abdomen during gravid condition, or pigmentation intensity. No specific courtship behaviour has been described for H. virolinica, and the species has not been kept in captivity in documented collections.
Breeding
Captive breeding records for Hemibrycon virolinica do not exist in the accessible literature — the species has not entered the aquarium trade and no ex-situ breeding programme has been reported. Based on the reproductive characteristics of the genus, it would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of small characids: spawning over fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, depositing small, adhesive eggs with no subsequent parental attention, and with eggs hatching within a few days under tropical stream temperatures.
Any attempt to breed this species in captivity would involve conditioning adults on varied live and frozen foods, providing fine-leaved spawning substrate, and separating eggs promptly to prevent predation. First foods for fry would be infusoria or commercial fry preparations, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as fry grow. These procedures are inferred from Hemibrycon genus norms; species-specific data are absent.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon virolinica is not an established aquarium fish and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. It has been described from wild-caught scientific specimens only, and there is no published account of the species being kept, displayed, or bred in captivity. Any future introduction to the hobby would require appropriate permitting given its status as a Colombian endemic from a restricted river system.
Should specimens become available, care parameters analogous to those of other Hemibrycon and Stevardiinae stream species would apply: well-oxygenated water, moderate current, temperatures in the 68–79 °F range, soft to neutral pH, a spacious aquarium with open swimming lanes, and a diet of varied small live and frozen invertebrates alongside quality dried foods. As a schooling stream fish, it would be expected to fare better in groups than in isolation. In the absence of documented aquarium records, these parameters reflect general genus-level inference only.
Conservation
Hemibrycon virolinica has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the current writing, and it carries no published conservation status (Not Evaluated). Its known distribution is restricted entirely to the Virolin River system of Cauca Department, Colombia — an extremely small range that, on geographic grounds alone, would qualify the species for heightened concern under any threat-assessment framework.
Andean stream endemics with single-river distributions are inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation, water diversion, deforestation in the catchment, and agricultural runoff — all pressures operating across the Colombian Andes. The Cauca region has experienced significant land-use change, and small tributary streams are often unmonitored and unprotected. Without a formal assessment and targeted survey work to establish population size and trend, the conservation standing of H. virolinica remains uncertain. It serves as a reminder that taxonomic description is only the first step: many newly described Andean endemics await ecological study and formal threat evaluation.
