Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia intermedia was described by Godoy in 1977, based on material from the Cachoeira de Emas on the Rio Mogi Guassu, at Pirassununga in the state of São Paulo, Brazil — a site at roughly 1640 ft elevation in the upper Paraná drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the authority as Godoy 1977 and notes that this name is treated as a synonym of Moenkhausia intermedia Eigenmann, 1908, an earlier description in the same genus. The parenthetical authority on the accepted name reflects that Eigenmann's 1908 species is the valid senior combination.
The genus Moenkhausia belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Americas. It is a large and taxonomically complex genus, and systematic work continues to reassign species and resolve synonymies; molecular phylogenies frequently recover Moenkhausia as polyphyletic, suggesting future splits are likely. For now, Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority on the valid name.
Morphology
Moenkhausia intermedia reaches a maximum standard length of around 3 in, though most aquarium specimens are somewhat smaller. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the silvery, semitransparent flanks typical of many Moenkhausia species — giving rise to the occasional common name 'Glass Tetra'. The scales reflect ambient light well, and the lateral line is visible as a faint stripe.
Like most characins, the species carries a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. The caudal fin is forked. Sexes are similar in external appearance, though ripe females are typically deeper-bodied when in breeding condition. The species is not especially colourful compared with showier tetras, but the clean silver flanks and active, alert posture make for a lively display fish in a larger group.
Habitat
Moenkhausia intermedia occupies an unusually broad geographic range for a characid of its size, recorded from the Amazon, Orinoco, La Plata (including the Paraná and Paraguay sub-basins), and the smaller Guianan drainages of Approuague, Maroni, and Mana River basins. This distribution spans several distinct drainage systems across Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
In terms of microhabitat, the species is benthopelagic — occurring in the water column close to or just above the substrate — in tropical freshwater environments. The type locality, the Cachoeira de Emas on the Rio Mogi Guassu in São Paulo state, is a stretch of river with relatively fast flow; congeners more broadly occupy everything from fast-flowing rocky streams with driftwood and sandy substrates to slower forest creeks with overhanging vegetation and leaf litter. Water conditions across the range are warm (73–81 °F / 73–81 °F) and soft to slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0), matching the broad soft-water conditions of much of tropical South America.
One notable behavioral trait is linked to predation avoidance: Moenkhausia intermedia is documented to jump out of the water as a defensive response to approaching threats — an escape mechanism also seen in other characins living in current-swept, open water.
Feeding
Moenkhausia intermedia is an omnivore. In the wild, the diet consists primarily of small crustaceans and other invertebrates, supplemented with plant material and whatever is seasonally available in the water column. Like most mid-sized tetras, it is an opportunistic feeder that takes food at multiple levels of the water column.
In the aquarium, it accepts a wide range of prepared foods — flake, small pellets, and wafers — and benefits from regular supplementation with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet supports good colour retention, immune function, and conditioning for breeding. Small, frequent feedings suit it better than one large daily meal.
Mating
Like other Moenkhausia and most characins, Moenkhausia intermedia is an egg-scattering spawner that broadcasts adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged vegetation without any subsequent parental involvement. Spawning is triggered by a combination of environmental cues — water temperature, water quality, and the presence of a willing partner — and typically takes place in the early morning.
Males will display to females with quivering or circling behaviour, and spawning occurs as the pair moves through or over fine-leaved vegetation. Because the species offers no parental care, it will readily consume its own eggs if they are not separated from the adults promptly after spawning. In a well-planted community tank with dense cover, small numbers of fry may occasionally survive unnoticed.
Breeding
Breeding Moenkhausia intermedia in captivity follows the standard open-spawning characin method. A separate breeding tank of modest size (around 10–15 US gal) with very soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.5, hardness below 5 °dH) and a temperature of around 79–81 °F (79–81 °F) provides the best trigger. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops give the fish the cover and substrate they seek for egg deposition.
Conditioned adults should be introduced in the evening; spawning often follows the next morning. The adhesive eggs are scattered among the plant matter and hatch within approximately 24–36 hours at breeding temperatures, consistent with the pattern seen in congeners. Adults must be removed as soon as spawning is complete, as they will eat the eggs. The tiny fry are free-swimming after a few days and require very small first foods — infusoria, commercial liquid fry food, or micro-worms — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth is steady under good water quality and regular feeding.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia intermedia is a robust, adaptable community fish that suits a wide range of planted or naturalistic aquaria. It does best in groups of six or more, which reduce individual stress and bring out natural schooling behaviour. A tank of 20–30 US gal or larger gives a school enough room to move freely; the species is an active swimmer and benefits from open swimming lanes as well as some planted or shaded areas for cover.
Water should be warm (73–81 °F / 73–81 °F) and soft to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0), conditions that match its natural range across multiple South American drainages. Good filtration and regular water changes matter more than precise chemistry. The species is notably prone to jumping — a tight-fitting lid is essential, as this trait (documented as a predator-escape response in the wild) manifests readily in aquaria when the fish is startled. Tankmates should be peaceful and of similar size; other tetras, small rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids are all compatible. It is not aggressive toward plants or other fish.
Conservation
Moenkhausia intermedia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded as of March 2021. The species' broad distribution across multiple major South American river systems — the Amazon, Orinoco, La Plata, and several Guianan drainages — means it is not considered at risk of range-wide decline. It is also collected for the aquarium trade and for commercial fisheries use, indicating a population that can sustain some harvest pressure.
No significant conservation threats specific to this species are identified in current assessments. As with all Amazonian and Orinocan fishes, long-term habitat integrity depends on the health of the surrounding catchments; deforestation and water quality degradation in parts of its range remain general concerns shared by many co-occurring species.
