Taxonomy & naming
Nannostomus trifasciatus was described by Franz Steindachner in 1876, placing it among the early-described members of the genus. The name Nannostomus — from the Greek nannos (dwarf) and stoma (mouth) — signals the characteristically tiny, upturned mouth shared by all pencilfish. The specific epithet trifasciatus is Latin for "three-banded" or "three-striped," a direct reference to the three longitudinal dark stripes that are the species' most conspicuous field mark.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name, which remains Nannostomus trifasciatus Steindachner, 1876, with the author not parenthesised because the species was described directly in Nannostomus and has not been moved since. The genus belongs to the family Lebiasinidae (order Characiformes), and the pencilfish as a group are sometimes placed in the subfamily Pyrrhulininae within that family.
Several forms or populations of N. trifasciatus have been recognised by aquarists and ichthyologists, differing subtly in the number of red-pigmented fin bases or in the breadth and clarity of the stripes; whether these represent distinct taxa awaits thorough revision. Fish in the trade are sometimes loosely labelled as one form or another depending on collection locality.
Morphology
Nannostomus trifasciatus is a slender, laterally compressed fish with the elongated, almost cylindrical body plan typical of the pencilfish group. Standard length in adults reaches approximately 1.5–2 in, making it one of the mid-sized pencilfish; FishBase lists a maximum of around 1.5 in SL. The mouth is small and distinctly upturned, an adaptation for feeding at or near the surface.
The colour pattern is built on a creamy or pale-gold ground colour crossed by three prominent dark horizontal stripes: one running along the midline from the snout through the caudal peduncle, one above it along the dorsal profile, and a third below running through the ventral region. Between these stripes the flanks may show a coppery or golden iridescence in good light. The fins are largely hyaline, but males in breeding condition develop conspicuous red pigment at the bases of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins — often a bright crimson patch — that makes this species one of the more colourful pencilfish.
Like other Nannostomus, N. trifasciatus also shows a striking nocturnal colour pattern: after lights-out the diurnal stripes fade and are replaced by a series of oblique dark blotches or bars along the flank, giving the fish an almost unrecognisable appearance. This resting coloration is normal and harmless, and the diurnal pattern returns with activity at dawn.
Habitat
Nannostomus trifasciatus is distributed across the Amazon basin and associated river systems of tropical South America, including records from the Amazon mainstream and numerous tributaries. FishBase records a distribution broadly across the Amazon drainage. Countries of occurrence include Brazil, Peru, and Colombia, with the species particularly associated with the western and central Amazon region.
In the wild it occupies the slow-moving or virtually still, shaded margins of streams, forest creeks, flooded forest (igapó and várzea), and oxbow lakes. These habitats are typically heavily shaded by overhanging vegetation, with dense submerged and emergent plant growth providing cover. The water is often soft, very warm, and stained brown to black with tannins and humic acids leached from decaying leaf litter — classic Amazonian blackwater conditions. The fish tend to hold in the upper to middle water column, often in loose aggregations near vegetation, where they pick minute invertebrates from the water.
Blackwater habitats of this type are characterised by very low mineral content, high acidity (pH routinely 4–6 in the most extreme forms), and warm temperatures year-round. Water clarity is poor due to tannin staining rather than turbidity, and light levels are low under the forest canopy. These conditions select for fish that are sensitive to abrupt changes in water chemistry — a point of practical importance in captivity.
Feeding
In nature, Nannostomus trifasciatus is a micro-predator of the upper water column, feeding primarily on minute invertebrates including small insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and zooplankton. The small, upturned mouth limits prey size, and feeding is accomplished with precise, individual strikes rather than filter-feeding. The species is adapted to picking prey from the surface film and from among fine vegetation.
In the aquarium it accepts small prepared foods readily, including fine-grade flake, micropellets, and powdered foods, but thrives best when offered regular live or frozen small foods: baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, Daphnia, cyclops, and similar invertebrates sized appropriately for the small mouth. A diet heavy in live and frozen foods produces the strongest colour in males and keeps fish in good condition. Because of the small mouth, food particle size must be checked — foods intended for larger tetras can be too coarse.
Mating
Nannostomus trifasciatus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, consistent with the general pattern across the pencilfish. Males in condition develop intensified red fin-base pigmentation and engage in courtship displays toward females, spreading fins and orienting parallel or head-to-tail to the female in the characteristic pencilfish mating posture.
Spawning takes place among fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, where the pair swim in tight proximity. Eggs are adhesive and small, deposited singly or in small numbers onto plant surfaces or dropping to the substrate. The adults will consume eggs given the opportunity and provide no subsequent care. In a well-planted tank with dense fine-leaved vegetation, small numbers of fry may be raised naturally without intervention, though yields are typically low this way.
Breeding
Breeding Nannostomus trifasciatus in the aquarium is achievable with well-conditioned adults, though somewhat more demanding than some of the more prolific small characins. A dedicated breeding setup with very soft, warm, acidic water — pH in the range 5.5–6.5, low conductivity, and temperature around 81–82 °F (81–82 °F) — produces the most reliable results. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops serve as the spawning medium.
After a courtship sequence, the pair release a small number of adhesive eggs among the plants. Removing the adults after spawning (or using a mesh bottom to protect eggs) improves yields. Eggs hatch in roughly 24–36 hours at breeding temperatures, and the fry are free-swimming within a few days. First foods must be very small: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food, with newly hatched brine shrimp introduced as the fry grow. Growth is relatively slow and the juvenile colouration is subdued; the adult pattern with red fin-base pigmentation develops gradually over several months.
In the aquarium
Nannostomus trifasciatus is a peaceful, small schooling fish well suited to a carefully maintained planted aquarium. It should be kept in groups of at least six, preferably more, as solitary or small-group individuals are often shy and may not display well. A biotope-style setup with soft, acidic, tannin-stained water, subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and fine-leaved vegetation that replicates its blackwater Amazonian habitat will bring out the best colour and behaviour.
Water quality matters considerably: this species is sensitive to the sudden introduction to hard, alkaline water and to poor water quality, and newly acquired specimens should be acclimated slowly. Ideal parameters run soft (less than 5 °dH) and acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), though aquarium-adapted stock may tolerate moderately harder, more neutral water. Temperature in the range of 75–82 °F (75–82 °F) suits it well. Tankmates should be small, peaceful, and similarly size-matched — other small tetras, dwarf corydoras, small rasboras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids that share the same soft-water preference are all appropriate. Large or boisterous fish will intimidate it and suppress colour. Because of its small mouth and retiring nature, it can be outcompeted at feeding by more active tankmates.
The nocturnal colour change — the stripes replaced by blotches after lights-out — is normal and should not concern the keeper. Under good conditions and with a varied diet including live and frozen foods, males develop striking red fin pigmentation that makes this one of the more attractive pencilfish for the specialist soft-water aquarium.
Conservation
Nannostomus trifasciatus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and currently carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species is widespread across the Amazon basin and its populations are not believed to be under immediate threat at the species level, though the blackwater habitats it favours are subject to localised pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and the general degradation of Amazonian riparian zones.
The aquarium trade has collected this species for decades and it is well established in captivity; tank-bred specimens are available, though wild-caught fish continue to enter the trade. From a conservation standpoint, aquarists purchasing captive-bred individuals are preferable to those taking wild-caught fish from already-pressured streams, particularly where collection intensity is high. The species' sensitivity to water quality and its dependence on intact, shaded, slow-water habitats means that land-use change in the Amazon remains the most significant long-term background threat, even in the absence of a formal IUCN assessment.
