Taxonomy & naming

Rhabdalestes yokai was described by Ibala Zamba and Vreven in 2008 from material collected in the Léfini and Sangha River drainages, both tributaries of the middle Congo River basin in the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic. The description was published with a diagnosis based on tooth morphology, lateral-line scale counts, and fin-ray counts that separate it from other members of the genus. The type locality lies within the Congo River system, one of the most species-rich freshwater basins on the African continent, where Alestidae diversity is high.

The genus Rhabdalestes belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a group of characiform fishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, from the great rift lakes to the Atlantic-draining rivers of West and Central Africa. Rhabdalestes encompasses small, active, shoaling species that share a slender body form and a preference for well-oxygenated, often clear riverine water. Morphology

Should the species become available, a group of six or more individuals would be appropriate, as Rhabdalestes species are active schoolers. A planted tank with open swimming space, dim to moderate lighting, and water chemistry leaning soft and slightly acidic would best replicate the forest-stream habitats of its native range. Live and frozen invertebrate foods alongside quality dry food would address its intermediate-carnivore diet. Given the complete absence of aquarium records, any keeper working with this species would be documenting novel ground.

Conservation

Rhabdalestes yokai has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE).
