Taxonomy & naming

Serrapinnus microdon was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915, the authority appearing in parentheses because the species was placed in a different genus at the time of its original description and was subsequently transferred to Serrapinnus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid combination Serrapinnus microdon (Eigenmann, 1915), and the parenthetical notation reflects that original generic placement.

The genus Serrapinnus belongs to the diverse family Characidae and encompasses a group of small, often superficially similar Neotropical stream tetras. The group was historically lumped under Cheirodon and allied genera before revisions established Serrapinnus as a distinct lineage. Higher-level systematics within the Characidae continue to be refined through molecular and morphological studies, but the genus and species status of S. microdon are not currently in dispute. The specific epithet microdon derives from the Greek mikros (small) and odon (tooth), a reference to the dentition that distinguishes this species within the genus.

Morphology

Serrapinnus microdon is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus it has a laterally compressed, fusiform body typical of open-water schooling tetras, with a relatively small head, a terminal mouth, and the modest adipose fin characteristic of the family.

Colouration in the genus is generally understated: a silvery to pale-yellowish body, often with a faint lateral stripe or mid-body darkening, and fins that are largely hyaline or lightly pigmented. Precise colour details for S. microdon in life are not well documented in the accessible literature, and detailed meristic data (scale counts, fin-ray counts, lateral-line counts) are beyond what can be reliably stated from the sources available. Habitat

Feeding

Dietary studies document S. microdon as a specialist on immature aquatic insects, with chironomid larvae (Chironomidae) and mayfly nymphs (Ephemeroptera) forming the predominant prey items. The diet reflects a preference for autochthonous (in-stream) resources rather than allochthonous (terrestrial) input, setting S. microdon apart from some sympatric characids that rely more heavily on fallen invertebrates or plant matter.

As with nearly all small Neotropical characids, it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — adults do not guard, tend, or mouth-brood eggs or fry. Spawning behaviour in the wild is likely tied to seasonal cues in the Paraguay basin, with flooding cycles influencing reproductive timing.

In the genus Serrapinnus, courtship is brief and spawning occurs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrate, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are deposited and left. The eggs are vulnerable to predation, including by the parents themselves, and natural recruitment depends on the spatial complexity of vegetated marginal habitats that provide refuge for eggs and early larvae.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding accounts for Serrapinnus microdon appear in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with other small characids of comparable size and reproductive mode, breeding in the aquarium would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: conditioned adults spawning over fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, depositing small adhesive eggs that the parents then ignore or consume.

Successful captive breeding would likely require separating eggs or spawning medium immediately after spawning to prevent predation. Fry would be very small at hatching and would require infusoria or similar first foods before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Water temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, clean water, and conditioning with live or frozen invertebrate foods would be appropriate preparation. In the aquarium

Water conditions appropriate to the Paraguay basin — warm (75–82 °F), circumneutral pH, soft to moderately hard — should suit the species well. Given the dietary data showing strong insectivore tendencies, the diet in captivity should be weighted toward small live and frozen invertebrate foods rather than relying solely on dry prepared foods. Its small size makes it suitable for community aquaria with other small, peaceful Neotropical fishes, though tankmates should be chosen carefully to avoid species large enough to view 1.5 in tetras as prey.

Conservation

Serrapinnus microdon is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded by FishBase as dating from March 2021. The Least Concern designation reflects adequate population size and distribution across the Paraguay River basin, with no documented population-level threats sufficient to qualify the species for a threatened category under IUCN criteria.

The Paraguay basin, while broadly intact over much of its extent, faces ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, wetland drainage, and water extraction in the Pantanal and adjacent regions. These pressures could affect stream-dwelling characids that depend on seasonal flooding dynamics and intact marginal vegetation over the longer term.
