Enteromius brachygramma is a small, poorly known African barb described by Boulenger in 1915 from a minor tributary of Lake Mweru within the upper Congo basin. Reaching barely 2 in in total length, it is a benthopelagic stream fish with an extremely restricted range, known with confidence only from its type locality — a small affluent of the Lukinda River in what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo. Like most narrow-range members of the genus Enteromius, it has been assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient: its biology and population status remain almost entirely undocumented, and its habitat sits in a remote and ecologically vulnerable corner of the Congo drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius brachygramma was formally described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1915. The original type locality is recorded as a small affluent of the Lukinda River within the Lake Mweru system, upper Congo basin, in present-day Democratic Republic of Congo.

The species was originally placed in the broad genus Barbus, and through much of the twentieth century it was carried as Puntius brachygramma under the large, polyphyletic catch-all Puntius that accommodated hundreds of small African and Asian barbs. Post-2012 revisions, following comprehensive phylogenetic work that dismantled the old Puntius, moved the African small barbs into Enteromius — the combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) as the current valid name. The parenthetical authority in the full combination, Enteromius brachygramma (Boulenger, 1915), marks the transfer out of Boulenger's original genus.

No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised. The species epithet brachygramma derives from Greek roots referring to a short or incomplete lateral line — a physical character that distinguishes this and related small Enteromius from larger barb relatives.

Morphology

Enteromius brachygramma is a small, slender-bodied barb reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2 in. It shares the general body plan of the genus: a moderately compressed, fusiform profile suited to life in flowing water, a small terminal mouth, and the two pairs of barbels (or reduced barbels) typical of many Enteromius.

The species is characterised by an incomplete lateral line, a feature recorded in FishBase and reflected in the etymology of its name. Specific details of its coloration in life — scale patterning, fin markings, and any sexual colour differences — are not well documented in the available literature, a consequence of the species' near-total absence from scientific collections beyond the original type material and a handful of subsequent records. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 3.0 (±0.3), consistent with an omnivorous small barb feeding at a low-to-intermediate position in the food web.

Habitat

The type locality of Enteromius brachygramma is a small tributary of the Lukinda River, a watercourse that drains into Lake Mweru — a large, relatively shallow rift-margin lake on the border of the DRC and Zambia, within the upper Congo basin. The Lukinda affluent where the type series was collected is a minor headwater stream; such streams in this part of central Africa typically run through seasonally wet savanna and gallery forest, with moderate current, sandy or silty substrates, and varying water clarity across seasons.

Records tentatively associated with E. brachygramma have also been noted from the Lake Rukwa drainage in southwestern Tanzania, though the species' exact distribution across both basins has not been confirmed with modern collections. Water chemistry data specific to this species are absent; congeners from the Congo basin and adjacent systems typically inhabit warm tropical streams with temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F and broadly neutral to mildly acidic conditions (pH 6.5–7.5). E. brachygramma is classed as benthopelagic, living at or near the substrate in these flowing-water environments.

Feeding

No targeted feeding studies have been carried out on Enteromius brachygramma. Based on its trophic level of 3.0 and its membership in a genus of generalised omnivores, it almost certainly feeds on a mix of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms — along with algae, diatoms, and particulate organic matter picked from the substrate and water column.

Small stream barbs of this kind typically forage actively throughout the day, exploring the bottom and any available hard surfaces for attached algae and invertebrates. The incomplete lateral line does not appear to preclude normal active foraging; such structures are common in small lentic or slow-flow specialists within the broader African barb fauna, though E. brachygramma is associated with flowing-water habitats.

Mating

No direct observations of mating behaviour in Enteromius brachygramma have been published. As a member of the family Cyprinidae and the genus Enteromius — a group characterised universally by egg-scattering reproduction — it is expected to follow the standard barb reproductive pattern: a non-guarding, scatter-spawning strategy with no pair bonding and no parental care.

In comparable small African barbs, a ripe male pursues a gravid female through vegetation, over sandy substrate, or among submerged roots and debris, the two fish pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. No nest is constructed, no territory is held beyond the brief courtship chase, and the adhesive eggs are left to their fate once shed. Colour and activity likely intensify in males at peak condition.

Breeding

Enteromius brachygramma has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree, and there are no published accounts of its reproductive biology in the wild beyond what can be inferred from close relatives. The general pattern for small Enteromius is an egg-scattering strategy in which a small number of adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, sandy substrate, or root tangles. The eggs receive no parental care, and adults will consume eggs given the opportunity.

In the seasonally variable rivers and streams of the upper Congo basin, spawning in related species is frequently linked to the onset of rains and rising water levels, which trigger upstream movements and trigger egg-laying over flooded marginal vegetation and submerged grasses. Fry of small barbs are typically free-swimming within a few days of hatching and begin feeding on microorganisms and fine particulate matter shortly after.

In the aquarium

Enteromius brachygramma is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It has no established common name, is not collected for the trade, and does not appear in hobbyist literature or commercial availability lists. Its extremely restricted known range, small size, and the remoteness of its type locality mean that it has never reached aquarium markets in any meaningful quantity.

Were it to become available, the general care requirements for a small Congo-basin Enteromius would apply: a spacious tank with gentle to moderate flow, subdued lighting, sandy or fine-gravel substrate, some cover in the form of plants or driftwood, and warm tropical water in the region of 72–79 °F with broadly neutral chemistry. Like most small African barbs it would be expected to do best in a group of six or more individuals.

Conservation

Enteromius brachygramma is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment, IUCN version 2020.2). The Data Deficient classification reflects a near-total absence of information on the species' current population size, trends, and ecology — not an assumption of security. The assessment highlights extreme endemism: the species is known with confidence only from its type locality, a single minor tributary of the Lukinda River in the DRC, which constitutes one of the most restricted known ranges of any barb in the Congo drainage.

The upper Congo basin faces ongoing and increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural encroachment on riparian zones, artisanal mining activities, and the consequent sedimentation and chemical pollution of tributary streams. A species restricted to a single small watercourse in this landscape faces an inherently precarious existence. Until targeted surveys confirm its presence across a broader area — or locate it in additional drainages such as the Lake Rukwa system where related records have been tentatively noted — its true conservation status cannot be determined, and it should be treated as potentially vulnerable by default.
