Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius lukindae was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1915, originally placed in the genus Barbus — the broad holding genus used by European ichthyologists of that era for virtually all African and Asian cyprinid minnow-barbs. The parenthetical authority in the current combination, (Boulenger, 1915), signals that the species has been moved out of its original genus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places the species in Enteromius, a genus that has absorbed many of the small sub-Saharan African barbs formerly assigned to Barbus sensu lato. The type locality is the Lukinda system within the Lake Mweru drainage of the upper Congo basin, and the species epithet directly commemorates that locality. No subspecies are recognised and no valid synonyms have been recorded.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in for Enteromius lukindae, placing it within the typical size range for small Enteromius species. The species has not been the subject of dedicated morphological publications accessible in the literature, and detailed published measurements of fin rays, lateral-line scale counts and body proportions are not readily available.
As with most small Enteromius, it can be expected to show the slender to moderately deep body plan characteristic of riverine African barbs, with a small terminal or subterminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and organic matter from the substrate. The benthopelagic designation assigned in FishBase is consistent with a fish that forages near or on the bottom in its native river habitat.
Habitat
Enteromius lukindae is native to the Lukinda River, a tributary draining into the Lake Mweru system in South Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo. Lake Mweru sits on the border between DRC and Zambia and forms part of the upper Congo basin. The river drainages feeding Mweru from the Katanga plateau typically flow across savanna and woodland terrain, with water chemistry that can vary seasonally but often tends toward warm, moderately oxygenated conditions.
No published temperature or pH records for the specific collection sites of E. lukindae are available in the sources. The Enteromius genus broadly favours clean, well-oxygenated rivers and streams across sub-Saharan Africa; the species' benthopelagic habit points to an association with the river bottom, likely over sand, gravel or fine substrate in moderate current.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Enteromius lukindae has been published. Small Enteromius species are generally considered opportunistic omnivores that forage close to the substrate, taking small invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae, worms and microcrustaceans alongside algal films, diatoms and organic detritus.
This benthopelagic foraging strategy is reflected in the small, ventrally oriented mouth typical of the group. In the aquarium, small Enteromius species accept good-quality flake or micro-pellet foods supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates, and occasional vegetable matter.
Mating
Enteromius lukindae, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No mating observations specific to this species have been published, but the reproductive biology of the genus follows a consistent pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together with no pair bond formed and no territory defended beyond the brief act of courtship.
Spawning is typically cued by seasonal water temperature rises and increased flow associated with the onset of rains in tropical African river systems. Adults do not guard or tend the eggs at any stage.
Breeding
Like all barbs, Enteromius lukindae is an egg-scatterer that provides no parental care. Adhesive eggs are released over fine substrate, plants or roots and left to develop unattended; adults will readily consume their own spawn if encountered. In the wild, seasonal flooding and warm wet-season temperatures likely trigger breeding activity across the Mweru drainage.
No captive breeding records for this species have been documented in the hobbyist or scientific literature. General Enteromius husbandry practice — soft to moderately hard, well-oxygenated warm water, a separation of adults post-spawn, and rearing of larvae on fine live foods — would apply if the species were ever bred in aquaria.
In the aquarium
Enteromius lukindae is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the hobby. It has not been exported from the DRC for the ornamental trade to any documented degree, and no husbandry accounts exist in hobbyist literature.
Were it to be kept, general small Enteromius care would be appropriate: a roomy, well-filtered tank with warm tropical temperatures, good oxygenation, and a mixed diet of small invertebrates and prepared foods. Like most barbs it would be expected to do best in a group, with compatible, similarly sized tankmates. Its obscurity and limited range make captive availability extremely unlikely in the near term.
Conservation
Enteromius lukindae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, last evaluated on 16 February 2009. The Data Deficient designation reflects the scarcity of distributional and population data rather than a judgement of low risk: the species is recorded only from the Lukinda River tributary in South Katanga, DRC, and insufficient survey work has been carried out to determine population size, trends or the full extent of its range.
The Lake Mweru basin faces ongoing pressures including artisanal mining activity in Katanga, agricultural encroachment on riparian corridors, and limited enforcement of freshwater protected areas. Whether these pressures affect E. lukindae specifically is unknown. The species is not listed under CITES or CMS.
