Enteromius kamolondoensis was first described by Max Poll in 1938 as Barbus kamolondoensis, named for the Kamolondo depression — a broad floodplain area associated with the upper Lualaba system in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. The species epithet is a toponym, linking the fish directly to the region of its type locality.
The old genus Barbus was historically used as a holding pen for a vast array of cyprinid barbs across Africa and Eurasia. Subsequent phylogenetic work progressively dismantled this assemblage; the African species are now distributed across several genera, and Enteromius has emerged as the principal genus for small African barbs formerly placed in Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the current valid combination as Enteromius kamolondoensis (Poll, 1938), with the parenthetical authority indicating the move from Poll's original genus.
A 2024 study of Enteromius diversity from the Congo basin, including the Aruwimi and Okapi areas, confirms the species within this genus and places it in the broader context of Congo ichthyological surveys. No subspecies or regional populations have been formally described.
Morphology
