Enteromius janssensi was formally described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1976, with type material from the Upemba National Park in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. The original combination was Barbus janssensi Poll, 1976; the species is now placed in the genus Enteromius, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises as the valid genus for this broad assemblage of African small barbs, many formerly grouped under the catch-all Barbus.
The species epithet honours André Janssens (1906–1954), a Belgian entomologist who worked in the Congo and contributed to the natural history collections from the region. The genus Enteromius itself encompasses hundreds of species across sub-Saharan Africa and remains one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera on the continent, with ongoing taxonomic revision as molecular and morphological work continues to refine species boundaries.
Morphology
Enteromius janssensi is a small barb, with FishBase recording a maximum length of 1.5 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals. In body form it follows the typical Enteromius plan: a laterally compressed, moderately deep body with a pointed snout, subterminal mouth, and the pair of rostral barbels characteristic of the genus. Detailed meristic and colouration data for this species remain sparse in the accessible literature.
As with many small African Enteromius, the coloration is likely a pale silvery to yellowish base with variable dark markings or a lateral stripe, though species-specific pigment pattern data are not well documented outside the original description. Sexual dimorphism is presumed to follow the general barb pattern, with females becoming noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Lualaba River and Lufira River systems, which form the headwaters of the Congo River in the southern Democratic Republic of Congo. Feeding

The species' native range within Upemba National Park, a protected area, and its obscurity in the trade mean that wild-caught specimens would be exceptional.
For those maintaining this or closely related small Enteromius, the standard approach for small African barbs applies: a well-filtered tank with warm water (75–79 °F), moderate current, soft to moderately hard neutral water, and a mix of open swimming space and plant cover. A shoal of at least six to eight individuals reduces stress and promotes natural behaviour. Small live and frozen invertebrates alongside quality prepared foods will maintain condition.

The evaluation reflects the species' occurrence within the Upemba National Park, a large protected area in the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which provides a measure of habitat security.
The upper Congo basin faces ongoing pressure from artisanal and industrial mining activity in Katanga, pollution from mine tailings, and catchment disturbance, all of which affect water quality in the Lufira and Lualaba systems. The protection afforded by Upemba National Park is significant for this species, but enforcement capacity and the park's broader ecological integrity remain concerns. The species' restricted range within a single hydrographic system means that localised deterioration of water quality could have disproportionate impacts on wild populations.
