Enteromius thespesios is a small, rheophilic barb from the southeastern arm of the Upper Congo River basin, described in 2020 by Katemo Manda and colleagues from specimens collected in the Kalule Nord, Luvilombo, and Chambeshi Rivers of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. Males of this newly described species carry striking red pigment on the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins and develop nuptial tubercles during the breeding season, making this an unusually dimorphic member of a genus not widely known for flashy coloration. Although not yet assessed by the IUCN, it is part of a remarkable radiation of freshwater fishes in the Congo Basin — one of the most biodiverse river systems on Earth.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius thespesios was formally described in 2020 by Katemo Manda, Snoeks, Decru, Bills, and Vreven in the Journal of Fish Biology (doi:10.1111/jfb.14108). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Enteromius thespesios Manda et al., 2020, with no prior combination under Barbus or any other genus — the species was not previously known to science.

The genus Enteromius is a large African genus resurrected and expanded in the early 21st century to accommodate many of the African small barbs that had accumulated in the wastebasket genus Barbus. It belongs to the family Cyprinidae. Enteromius thespesios joins a growing list of newly described species from the Congo Basin, a region where intensive museum-based ichthyological work continues to reveal cryptic and genuinely new species in the Upper Congo and its tributaries.

The species epithet thespesios derives from ancient Greek, meaning "divine" or "wondrous" — likely an allusion to the striking sexual dimorphism and the unexpectedness of finding such a colorful barb in the Congo headwaters.

Morphology

Enteromius thespesios is a small barb, reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length in males and 2.5 in SL in females — making females very slightly larger, as is typical in many barbs. The species is a benthopelagic, rheophilic fish, and its body form presumably reflects adaptation to flowing-water habitats: a streamlined profile capable of holding position in current.

The most striking feature of this species is its pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males display vivid red coloration on the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins, and develop nuptial tubercles on the snout during the breeding season. Males also have a proportionally longer snout and longer pectoral fins, and a shorter anal fin, compared with females. This degree of external sexual differentiation is notable within Enteromius and was one of the key characters used to distinguish E. thespesios from related species in the Upper Congo drainage during the 2020 description.

Habitat

Enteromius thespesios is known from the southeastern portion of the Upper Congo River basin, specifically from the Kalule Nord, Luvilombo, and Chambeshi Rivers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. These are upland river systems draining into the Congo system, flowing through savanna and miombo woodland landscapes at relatively high elevation compared with the central Congo lowlands.

FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and rheophilic — adapted to flowing water, likely occupying riffles and runs over rocky or gravelly substrate. Water chemistry in the upper Chambeshi system tends toward neutral to slightly alkaline conditions: FishBase gives a pH range of 7.9–8.7 and water temperatures of 77–82 °F for the recorded localities, reflecting the clearer, harder character of upland African savanna rivers rather than the soft, acidic forest streams found deeper in the Congo Basin.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study has been published for Enteromius thespesios specifically. As a benthopelagic barb occupying rocky, flowing-water habitats, it likely feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, and worms — along with biofilm, algae, and organic detritus picked from rock surfaces and the substrate, which is the generalized feeding strategy documented across much of Enteromius.

In the aquarium, related African Enteromius species accept a wide range of standard foods including good-quality granules, flakes, and live or frozen invertebrates. Providing varied diet including small live or frozen foods is advisable to reflect the invertebrate component of the natural diet.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius thespesios is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, and no parental care is provided. During the breeding season, males develop vivid red fin coloration and nuptial tubercles on the snout — features that are likely involved in male-male competition and female mate choice in their rheophilic habitat.

Spawning behavior has not been documented in detail for this species, but the pattern inferred for the genus is one in which a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair briefly pressing together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive eggs are then abandoned by both parents.

Breeding

Enteromius thespesios is a newly described species and has not been established in the aquarium hobby in any meaningful numbers, so captive breeding details are not available. By analogy with other Enteromius from upland African rivers, a breeding setup would likely involve clean, well-oxygenated water at temperatures in the 77–82 °F range and near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, with some current, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate barrier to separate eggs from adults.

The species scatters adhesive eggs and provides no parental care; adults will consume eggs if given access to them. Eggs and larvae of related species typically hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing a few days after that.

In the aquarium

Enteromius thespesios is not currently established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be available through the ornamental trade. It is a recently described scientific species known from a limited number of museum specimens collected in the Upper Congo basin.

Should it ever become available, its rheophilic nature suggests it would require a well-oxygenated, flowing-water setup with clean water in the neutral-to-alkaline range and temperatures of 77–82 °F. The pronounced sexual dimorphism — with males showing red-banded fins and nuptial tubercles — would make it a visually rewarding species for specialists. Its size of around 2.5 in SL makes it suitable for medium-sized aquaria.

Conservation

Enteromius thespesios has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026 (status: Not Evaluated). It was only described to science in 2020, and formal conservation assessments for newly described species from the Congo Basin often lag years behind their description.

The species is known from the Upper Congo drainage in DRC and Zambia — a region that is part of the Congo Basin, recognized globally as a freshwater biodiversity hotspot. The Royal Museum for Central Africa has highlighted the ongoing discovery of new species in this drainage as evidence of its exceptional aquatic diversity and the importance of continued research and conservation attention. Pressures on Upper Congo basin rivers include artisanal mining, agricultural expansion, and modifications to seasonal flood regimes, though the specific vulnerability of E. thespesios to these pressures is not yet documented.
