Enteromius marmoratus was described by L. David and M. Poll in 1937, originally placed in the genus Barbus as Barbus marmoratus — the pairing that still appears in older literature and museum catalogs. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names used here, places the species in Enteromius, a large African barb genus that has absorbed many former Barbus from sub-Saharan Africa following revisionary work on the old catch-all genus.
The species epithet marmoratus is Latin for "marbled" or "mottled", a direct reference to the dark-edged scales and black lateral banding that breaks into a series of vertical blotches along the flank. The description was part of a broader 1937 study of the ichthyological fauna of the Belgian Congo, and the type series was drawn from the Kando River near Tenke in what is now Lualaba Province, DRC. No subspecies are recognised.
Morphology
Enteromius marmoratus is a small barb reaching approximately 2.5 in in total length. Like other members of the genus it has the moderately deep, laterally compressed body typical of small African cyprinids, with a blunt snout, moderately sized eyes and the barbel complement characteristic of Enteromius.
The common name of the species — where it is applied at all — reflects the most distinctive feature: the marbled or mottled patterning produced by dark-edged scales and black pigment on the flanks that coalesces into poorly defined vertical bars or blotches rather than a clean lateral stripe. Habitat
The species is known from freshwater habitats in the upper Lualaba drainage, specifically the Kando River near Tenke in the southern DRC — a region of savanna and transitional woodland. The Lualaba is the upper arm of the Congo River, and its tributaries in this part of Lualaba Province flow through relatively open country rather than closed-canopy rainforest.
Enteromius marmoratus is described as benthopelagic and tropical in habit. No specific water-chemistry measurements (temperature, pH, hardness) have been published for this species in the accessible literature; the broader upper-Congo region typically has warm, moderately soft freshwaters. Given the narrow known range — a single river system — the species is considered a local endemic. Data on microhabitat preferences and seasonal movement are sparse.
Feeding
No dietary study specific to Enteromius marmoratus exists in the published literature. As a small benthopelagic cyprinid of tropical African rivers, it can reasonably be inferred to be an opportunistic omnivore in the manner typical of Enteromius: foraging on small invertebrates, algae, organic detritus and fine plant material from the substrate and the water column.
This generalisation is consistent with the ecology of comparable small Enteromius across central and southern Africa, where gut-content studies show a mixed diet dominated by invertebrate prey and algal material varying by season and local productivity. Breeding
Enteromius marmoratus has not been bred in captivity in any documented account, and no aquarium husbandry data exist for the species. Based on the biology of the genus and the ecology of its upper-Congo habitat, breeding is expected to follow the standard barb pattern: eggs scattered among aquatic vegetation, submerged roots or over the substrate, with no parental care and adults liable to consume eggs and larvae if encountered.
As a narrow endemic of the Lualaba drainage, the species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade, and there is no hobbyist literature to draw on. Any captive breeding would need to address the soft, warm tropical water of its home river and the likely seasonality of spawning condition.

Enteromius marmoratus is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it is absent from the trade and has no established captive-keeping literature. Its small size (2.5 in TL) and inferred requirements (warm, soft tropical water, open benthic foraging space, a shoal of conspecifics) are not inherently demanding, but the species is an upper-Congo endemic that has never been commercially collected or bred.
For the hobbyist interested in central African barbs, related and more widely available Enteromius from the Congo basin or southern Africa represent realistic alternatives. Any future collection and keeping would need institutional or specialist context given the species' narrow range and the import sensitivities around Congolese fauna.
Conservation
Enteromius marmoratus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 16 February 2009. The assessment notes no documented threats and no fisheries or trade interest in the species. It is not listed under CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species.
The LC status should be read in the context of data scarcity: the species is known only from its type locality in the Kando River near Tenke, a region that has experienced significant industrial pressure from copper and cobalt mining in Lualaba Province. No population surveys have been published, and the narrow endemic range means any localised degradation of the Kando River — from mining runoff, water extraction or habitat alteration — could have disproportionate effects. A reassessment with current survey data would be valuable.
