Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius prionacanthus was described by Mahnert and Géry in 1982, originally placed in the genus Barbus as Barbus prionacanthus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Enteromius prionacanthus (Mahnert & Géry, 1982), with the parenthetical authority marking its transfer from the original genus.
The genus Enteromius was resurrected and broadened to accommodate the bulk of sub-Saharan African barbs following the progressive dismemberment of the old, paraphyletic Barbus. Most small-to-medium African barbs once lumped in Barbus now sit in Enteromius, while the name Barbus is retained in a stricter sense for the large barbels of North Africa and Eurasia. Enteromius prionacanthus belongs to the subfamily Smiliogastrinae and is classified within the family Cyprinidae.
Morphology
Enteromius prionacanthus is a small ray-finned fish reaching a recorded maximum of 3.5 in standard length. Like most members of Enteromius it has the compact, laterally compressed body plan typical of African stream barbs, with a single dorsal spine and 9–11 dorsal soft rays, and 8 anal soft rays — fin-ray counts consistent with the genus.
Detailed colour description and meristic data are limited in the accessible literature; the species name prionacanthus — from Greek prion (saw) and akantha (spine or thorn) — likely refers to a serrated or toothed dorsal spine, a feature found in several African barbs and sometimes used as a diagnostic character. Its benthopelagic habits suggest a life spent close to the substrate in the lower water column.
Habitat
Enteromius prionacanthus is endemic to Gabon, falling within the Lower Guinea biogeographical province of Central Africa. It inhabits freshwater environments and is recorded as a benthopelagic species, living in the lower portion of the water column near the riverbed.
Gabon's freshwater systems include a mix of coastal lowland rivers, forest streams and savanna drainages flowing to the Atlantic, many of which carry soft, slightly acidic water under equatorial forest cover. The thermal regime is tropical and relatively stable year-round. Specific water-chemistry parameters for this species are not detailed in the available literature, but the equatorial Gabonese rivers it inhabits are typically warm and moderately soft.
Feeding

Like all barbs, Enteromius prionacanthus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is defended beyond the transient pursuit of courtship, and no pair bond persists after spawning. In typical barb fashion a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief contact before the pair separates.
Courtship colour and activity peak at spawning time. Eggs are adhesive and settle among plants, roots or substrate particles. Adults give no attention to eggs or larvae after release.
Breeding
No specific captive-breeding accounts for Enteromius prionacanthus appear in the accessible literature. By analogy with other small Enteromius, reproduction would follow the standard barb pattern: a separate, clean spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom layer, conditioned adults, and removal of the adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Eggs are adhesive and typically hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae appearing a few days later. Adults scatter eggs non-selectively and will eat them given the opportunity; no parental care of any kind is provided.
In the aquarium
Enteromius prionacanthus is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby, and captive-husbandry data are very limited. As a small African barb from equatorial Gabon it would be expected to thrive in warm tropical freshwater (roughly 75–81 °F) with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, a furnished tank offering cover near the substrate, and a diet of small dry foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates.
Given its benthopelagic habits, a tank with a soft substrate and some leaf litter or root structures would reflect its natural environment. As with most small barbs, a small shoal is preferable to individuals kept alone.
Conservation
Enteromius prionacanthus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded in 2009. FishBase notes a high population resilience score for the species. As a Gabonese endemic its range is geographically restricted, but Gabon retains among the highest forest-cover percentages in sub-Saharan Africa and many of its river systems remain in relatively good condition compared to more heavily developed regions of the continent.
The principal threats to Gabonese freshwater fishes over the long term include oil and mining industry impacts on river catchments, localised deforestation, and any future intensification of water extraction. This species is not known to be collected for the ornamental trade at commercial scale.
