Enteromius tegulifer was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1936, originally placed in the genus Barbus as Barbus tegulifer. The original description was based on material from Cameroon, and FishBase records the species under ID 11488. Subsequent phylogenetic work on African small barbs led to its reclassification into the genus Enteromius, a large and diverse genus of tropical African cyprinids now placed in the subfamily Smiliogastrinae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination Enteromius tegulifer (Fowler, 1936), with the parenthetical authority marking its transfer from the genus in which it was originally described.
The old genus Barbus, as it was historically applied in Africa, was a catch-all that encompassed hundreds of species now distributed across multiple genera. Enteromius is among the largest of these segregates, covering a wide range of small to medium-sized African barbs. Within that assemblage, E. tegulifer is known only from Cameroon and has received little dedicated study.
Morphology
Detailed morphometric data for Enteromius tegulifer are not well documented in the accessible literature.
