Enteromius thysi is a small African barb endemic to a narrow coastal strip of the Gulf of Guinea — the rivers of southwestern Cameroon and the island of Bioko (formerly Fernando Póo), Equatorial Guinea. Reaching about 2.5 in standard length, it is a benthopelagic stream fish with a distinctive spot pattern of two round marks beneath the dorsal fin and a third on the caudal peduncle, two pairs of long barbels, and a subinferior mouth suited to foraging near the bottom. First described by Trewavas in 1974 and formerly placed in Barbus before the genus Enteromius was formalised, it is now assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List owing to its very restricted distribution and the relentless pressure on coastal lowland habitats in the region.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius thysi was described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1974, originally under the genus Barbus — the old, broadly defined catch-all that once held nearly all African and Eurasian barbs. The species was placed in Barbus thysi before the progressive revision of African cyprinid systematics moved it into Enteromius, a genus that today accommodates a large share of the small-to-medium African barbs. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Enteromius thysi (Trewavas, 1974), the parenthetical authority signalling the move out of Trewavas's original genus.

The mitogenome of the species was sequenced and published in 2023 (Fishes, MDPI), confirming its phylogenetic placement within Enteromius and providing the first molecular data for the taxon. The type locality is Fernando Póo — the colonial-era name for Bioko Island — and additional material is known from the Kake River and the Mungo River basin on the adjacent Cameroonian mainland.

Morphology

Enteromius thysi is a small barb reaching 2.5 in standard length (SL). FishBase records the species as benthopelagic with a subinferior mouth — positioned slightly below the snout tip — indicating a bottom-oriented feeding posture. It carries two pairs of long barbels, a feature that distinguishes it from shorter-barbelled congeners. The lateral-line scale count is 26–30, and 12 scales ring the caudal peduncle.

The most diagnostic markings are three dark round spots: two situated beneath the dorsal-fin base and a third on the caudal peduncle. This three-spot arrangement, combined with the barbel length and meristics, is the primary basis for separating E. thysi from sympatric or parapatric Enteromius species in the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province.

Habitat

The species is restricted to freshwater headwater streams and coastal river systems of the Lower Guinea province — the Kake River, the Mungo River basin in southwestern Cameroon, and streams on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. This corner of the Gulf of Guinea holds one of Africa's most localised freshwater fish faunas, cut off from the rest of the continent by the Cameroon Highlands and by the oceanic gap that separates Bioko from the mainland.

The mitogenome study notes that the species occurs in headwater streams sensitive to habitat quality, implying clear, well-oxygenated water with stable flow. Specific water-chemistry data (pH, hardness, temperature) are sparse in the literature, but the region's coastal rainforest streams are generally soft and slightly acidic, shaded by intact forest canopy. Sedimentation and turbidity from catchment disturbance are likely stressors.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Enteromius thysi has been published. Its subinferior mouth and bottom-oriented lifestyle point to a benthic feeding mode typical of small African Enteromius — opportunistic gleaning of small invertebrates, organic detritus, algal films and plant material from the substrate and from leaf litter.

Congeneric small African barbs with similar morphology are generalist omnivores in clear rainforest streams, picking chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, and fine organic matter from sandy or rocky bottoms. E. thysi is assumed to follow this pattern given the shared body plan and habitat context, though field gut-content data are absent.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius thysi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific field observations of its spawning behaviour have been recorded, but the reproductive strategy is uniform across the barb lineage: a gravid female is pursued by a driving male through submerged vegetation, roots, or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief embraces. No nest is built and no territory is defended beyond the transient pursuit of the female.

The adhesive eggs scatter onto the bottom or among fine-leaved plants and are abandoned by both parents immediately after spawning. Adults will consume their own eggs if they encounter them. Spawning in coastal rainforest barbs is often linked to the onset of rains and rising water levels, which flush nutrients and trigger reproductive readiness.

Breeding

Enteromius thysi is not known in the aquarium hobby and has not been bred in captivity as far as the published literature reveals. Its reproductive biology is inferred from the barb archetype: eggs are scattered adhesively over the substrate or vegetation, both parents leave immediately after spawning, and there is no parental care of any kind — no guarding, no fanning, no mouthbrooding.

Given the species' Endangered status and the logistical difficulty of obtaining specimens from its restricted range in southwestern Cameroon and Bioko, captive maintenance is extremely unlikely in the near term. Any conservation-motivated ex-situ effort would need to address the challenges of collecting and maintaining live material from a remote, poorly studied drainage system.

In the aquarium

Enteromius thysi is not available in the aquarium trade. No records of the species being kept or bred in captivity appear in the hobbyist literature. Its very restricted natural range, Endangered status, and the absence of any established collection or export route mean it is effectively unknown outside its native rivers.

For aquarists interested in small African barbs from the Gulf of Guinea region, broader-ranging congeners from Cameroon and West Africa are occasionally offered through specialist importers, but E. thysi specifically is not among them. Data on its compatibility, water preferences, and behaviour in captivity are entirely absent.

Conservation

Enteromius thysi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment in 2022. The primary basis for this listing is the species' extremely limited extent of occurrence and area of occupancy — confined to a handful of river systems in southwestern Cameroon and Bioko Island — combined with ongoing and projected habitat deterioration across that range.

The IUCN assessment identifies habitat destruction, sedimentation, pollution, and broader anthropogenic pressure as the principal threats. Southwestern Cameroon has experienced sustained agricultural expansion, logging, and associated catchment degradation that raises turbidity and reduces the clear, forested stream conditions on which the species depends. Bioko's freshwater systems face similar pressures from land clearing and human settlement. Given the species' naturally small range and the pace of habitat change in the Lower Guinea coastal zone, the Endangered status reflects a genuine and ongoing extinction risk rather than a precautionary designation.
