Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius trispilomimus was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1907 from specimens collected in the South Cameroon region, and the original combination was Barbus trispilomimus. Boulenger was the foremost authority on African freshwater fishes of his era, and his cyprinid work from the Congo basin and adjacent coastal drainages remains a baseline reference for the region. The specific epithet refers directly to the three spots along the side of the body.
The genus Enteromius was erected by Edward Drinker Cope in 1867 and has been reinstated as the working genus for a large segment of small, sub-Saharan African barbs that were long lumped under the catch-all Barbus. As with many African species, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) treats the current combination as Enteromius trispilomimus (Boulenger, 1907), the parenthetical authority reflecting the move from the original genus. The old combination Barbus trispilomimus appears in historical specimen records and museum catalogues.
Morphology
Enteromius trispilomimus is a small barb reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2 in. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, as is typical of the genus. The mouth is subinferior — positioned slightly below the tip of the snout — and lacks barbels, a feature noted in the original description and characteristic of a number of small Enteromius species.
The most distinctive feature is the pattern of three oval to rounded dark spots arranged longitudinally along the side of the body, from which the epithet trispilomimus ("three-spot mimic" or "three-spot") derives. FishBase records 11 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays. The species is benthopelagic in habit, living close to but not exclusively on the bottom. This is a biologically rich but relatively small coastal strip of equatorial Africa characterised by short rivers rising in the Atlantic-facing escarpments and flowing through lowland forest and transitional savanna to the ocean.
The species is recorded as a tropical freshwater fish, benthopelagic in shallow to moderate water. The forested coastal rivers of this region typically carry soft, warm water with limited chemistry data published at the species level; temperature conditions consistent with equatorial West Africa fall in the range of approximately 72–81 °F. The Chiloango drainage in particular has a mix of forest-stream and savanna habitats depending on elevation and season.
Feeding

The species' maximum size of 2 in TL makes it compatible with a small-fish community setup. No specific husbandry notes exist in the hobby literature.
