The parenthetical authority notation reflects that Holly originally placed the species in a different genus; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Labeobarbus fimbriatus as the current valid combination.

The genus Labeobarbus is part of the family Cyprinidae and encompasses the African yellowfishes along with a number of large riverine barb species from eastern and central Africa. Labeobarbus fimbriatus is confirmed as a Lower Guinea endemic, known only from the Sanaga River system in Cameroon. Its specific epithet fimbriatus is Latin for "fringed" or "bordered", likely referring to a morphological feature of the fins or scales noted by Holly in the original description, though detailed type-series data are sparse in the secondary literature.

Habitat

Related Labeobarbus species from comparable African river systems are known to inhabit river channels and larger tributaries with moderate current, over rocky, sandy, or mixed substrates. FishBase classifies L. fimbriatus as tropical and benthopelagic, consistent with a species that forages near the bottom in river channels. Export from Cameroon would require appropriate permits.

At the time of assessment the species was judged to lack the level of population decline or range restriction that would trigger a threatened category, despite its endemic status within the Sanaga basin.

As a single-basin endemic, L. fimbriatus is inherently more vulnerable than wide-ranging species should conditions in the Sanaga system deteriorate significantly. The Sanaga River faces pressures common to major Cameroonian rivers, including hydroelectric development — the Nachtigal hydropower project and existing dams on the Sanaga — as well as agricultural runoff, artisanal mining, and expanding human settlement in the catchment. A reassessment of this species using current population data would be valuable given how much has changed in the basin since 2009.
