Labeobarbus longifilis is a large African cyprinid described by Pellegrin in 1935 from the upper Congo Basin, where it is restricted to the Loama and Kanséhété rivers — small tributaries of the Luhoho system draining into the Lowa River in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Growing to at least 10 in standard length, it is a benthopelagic insectivore with a distinctive fleshy mental lobe on the chin, and its habitat associations are tied more to water chemistry — electrical conductivity and temperature — than to substrate type. Little population data has been gathered, and the species remains assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus longifilis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1935 under the original combination Barbus longifilis, from specimens collected in the upper Congo Basin. The genus Barbus was historically used as a broad catch-all for African and Eurasian barbels; modern phylogenetic work has redistributed many African species to Labeobarbus Rüppell, 1835, a genus now recognised for a diverse assemblage of large-bodied African riverine barbs sometimes called "yellowfish" or "African mahseer" by English-speaking anglers. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Labeobarbus longifilis (Pellegrin, 1935), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Pellegrin's original genus.

Within Labeobarbus the species belongs to a group of Congo Basin endemics whose taxonomy remains incompletely resolved. Its restriction to a small tributary network in eastern DRC sets it apart from the more widespread yellowfish species of southern and eastern Africa.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 10 in (approximately 12.5 in total length) for the species, placing it firmly among the larger African riverine barbs. Its body form is that of a typical large Labeobarbus — moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the robust musculature expected in a fast-water cyprinid.

A particularly notable feature is the mental lobe: a fleshy, rubberlip-like appendage on the chin that characterises this species within its habitat assemblage. This structure is associated with an insectivorous rather than algae-scraping feeding mode, distinguishing L. longifilis from superficially similar congeners that use a harder, scraping lower jaw. Scale count and fin ray details from the original description are recorded in the type series.

Habitat

Labeobarbus longifilis is known from the Loama and Kanséhété rivers, both tributaries of the Luhoho River within the broader Lowa River system of the upper Congo Basin in eastern DRC. These are small to medium-sized highland tributaries characteristic of the Albertine Rift periphery, with conditions that reflect the cooler, higher-elevation origin of their waters before they descend toward the main Congo drainage.

A habitat association study of the Luhoho basin found that L. longifilis predominantly occupies habitats without stones, a counter-intuitive finding for a large barb in a hill-river system. Its occurrence is more strongly predicted by electrical conductivity and water temperature than by substrate composition. Synthesis data for the genus suggests a temperature window of roughly 73–79 °F and a pH range of about 6.5–7.2 for upper Congo Labeobarbus populations, cooler than the warmer lowland Congo stretches downstream.

Feeding

The mental lobe (a rubberlip-like fleshy chin appendage) identifies L. longifilis as an insect feeder rather than an algae scraper. Habitat research confirms that the species takes insects, consistent with a benthic foraging strategy in which the mental lobe assists with probing soft substrates for invertebrate prey. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 3.2 based on the feeding ecology of the species' closest relatives, placing it in the omnivore-leaning insectivore range typical of mid-sized riverine barbs.

In the wild, diet likely spans aquatic insect larvae, small invertebrates and opportunistic organic matter picked from soft sediment and open substrate — the habitats without stones that the Luhoho study found it preferentially occupying.

Mating

No specific mating observations for L. longifilis have been published. Like all members of the family Cyprinidae, Labeobarbus species are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. Large African river barbs are typically seasonal broadcast spawners, with males driving ripe females over gravelly or vegetated substrates in response to seasonal hydrological cues — rising water levels or temperature shifts that mark the onset of the rainy season.

Courtship in large Labeobarbus involves active male pursuit of gravid females through the water column or over the substrate, culminating in a brief press-together release of eggs and milt. No pair bond is formed and no territory is held beyond the brief courtship chase.

Breeding

No captive breeding reports for Labeobarbus longifilis are known. The species has not been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby in any documented way, and its restricted range in a remote part of eastern DRC means wild-spawning biology has not been directly studied.

By analogy with other large Labeobarbus species, reproductive behaviour is expected to be that of an egg-scattering broadcast spawner: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered over gravel or submerged vegetation with no parental care whatsoever. Adults would play no role in egg or fry protection, and eggs and larvae are subject to predation including by the spawning adults themselves. Fecundity in large riverine barbs is generally high, offsetting per-egg survival losses.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus longifilis is not a recognised aquarium fish and is effectively absent from the hobby. Its restricted range in the upper Congo Basin, the remoteness of its native rivers, and the absence of any trade collection mean it has not entered the ornamental market in any documented form.

A fish of 10–12.5 in with the typical temperament of a large riverine barb would require a very substantial aquarium — a species of this size would need a tank of several hundred litres with strong filtration and oxygenation to replicate the well-oxygenated hill-river conditions of its native Luhoho tributaries. Water chemistry in the 73–79 °F range at near-neutral pH would be appropriate. In practice, this species is an object of scientific interest rather than aquarium husbandry.

Conservation

Labeobarbus longifilis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The DD listing reflects the genuine paucity of baseline data on the species' population size, trend, and the precise nature and scale of threats it faces in its restricted range within the Loama and Kanséhété river system in eastern DRC.

The upper Congo Basin region has experienced decades of civil unrest and limited scientific access, meaning systematic survey work has been difficult to conduct. General threats to freshwater fish across the eastern DRC include artisanal and subsistence fishing pressure, deforestation of riparian zones, and increasing sedimentation in highland tributaries. The species' apparently narrow range — confined to two named tributaries of a single river system — makes it potentially vulnerable to any localised habitat deterioration. Reassessment with modern survey data would clarify whether it merits a threatened category.
