Labeobarbus mariae is a large freshwater barb endemic to the river systems of Cameroon in West-Central Africa, known only from the Wouri and Sanaga basins in the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province. First described by Maximilian Holly in 1926 under the name Barbus mariae, it is a benthopelagic species characterised by a strongly curved mouth, two pairs of barbels, a stiffened last dorsal ray, and relatively few lateral-line scales. Like the other large African members of its genus — collectively called yellowfish or large African barbs — it is a powerful river fish of open-water and bottom-associated habitats, and it carries the IUCN rating of Least Concern, assessed in 2009.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus mariae was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Maximilian Holly in 1926 under the original combination Barbus mariae. The parenthetical authority in the current name, (Holly, 1926), marks the subsequent move out of Barbus into Labeobarbus, the genus now used by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) for the large African barbs long lumped under Barbus sensu lato or Cyprinus/Labeobarbus in older literature. The type locality is within the Lower Guinea biodiversity province of Cameroon.

The genus Labeobarbus contains dozens of African species ranging from the large migratory yellowfish of southern and eastern Africa to a scatter of smaller, more localised West and Central African forms. Labeobarbus mariae falls in the latter group — a Cameroonian endemic with a restricted watershed range rather than a basin-wide distribution. No subspecies are currently recognised. FishBase carries the species under its Labeobarbus placement, consistent with Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Labeobarbus mariae reaches a recorded maximum standard length of 12 in, though a single measurement of 7 in total length is also on record, suggesting most individuals encountered are considerably smaller than the species maximum. It is a moderately deep-bodied barb with the robust, fusiform build typical of large riverine Labeobarbus.

Key diagnostic characters noted in the literature include a strongly curved mouth — a distinctive feature among the large African barbs — two pairs of barbels, and a last dorsal-fin ray that is ossified (stiffened into a spine-like structure). The pelvic-fin insertion lies below the mid-point of the dorsal-fin base. The lateral-line scale count is 25 or fewer, which is low relative to many congeners and helps separate this species from others in the Lower Guinea assemblage. Colouration in the field is not well documented in accessible literature; large Labeobarbus are generally silvery to bronze-flanked with darker dorsal surfaces.

Habitat

The species is native to the Wouri and Sanaga river basins of Cameroon, two of the major drainages of the West-Central African coastal zone. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic — associated with both the water column and the bottom — in freshwater environments. Within these river systems it is expected to use the mainstream channels and larger tributaries rather than small headwater streams, consistent with the ecology of large-bodied Labeobarbus elsewhere on the continent.

Detailed water-chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) are not available in the primary literature accessible for this species; the Wouri and Sanaga systems drain a landscape ranging from coastal lowlands to inland highlands, and conditions vary accordingly. No published temperature or pH range is attributed to Labeobarbus mariae specifically in accessible sources.

Feeding

Diet specifics for Labeobarbus mariae have not been documented in detail in accessible published literature. Large riverine Labeobarbus are generally opportunistic omnivores, taking algae, plant material, invertebrates, and organic detritus according to what the river offers seasonally and locally — a feeding mode consistent with the species' benthopelagic classification and its moderately curved mouth.

The curved mouth morphology found in Labeobarbus mariae is often associated with scraping or grazing on algae and biofilm-covered substrates in African riverine barbs, though without direct gut-content studies for this species any dietary detail remains inferential from congener ecology.

Mating

Labeobarbus mariae is presumed to follow the reproductive strategy universal among barbs: it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest, bubble-nest, or mouthbrooding behaviour occurs in any Labeobarbus, and no pair bond is maintained beyond the act of spawning. Large African Labeobarbus often undertake seasonal upstream migrations tied to rain cycles, moving to gravel runs or riffle zones to broadcast eggs and milt over the substrate.

Courtship in large riverine barbs typically involves males pursuing gravid females through the current over the spawning substrate. Eggs and milt are released together in brief bursts, and the adults depart without further involvement. No parental care of any kind has been recorded for any Labeobarbus species.

Breeding

As with all barbs, reproduction in Labeobarbus mariae is by egg-scattering with no parental care. Spawning in large African Labeobarbus is generally seasonal, often timed to rising water levels at the onset of the wet season when river flows increase and water temperatures may shift. Adults migrate to suitable gravel or rocky substrates to scatter adhesive eggs, which then develop without any attendance from either parent.

No captive breeding records for Labeobarbus mariae are documented in the accessible literature. As a large, river-dwelling African barb it is not a standard aquarium breeding subject, and hatchery data — if any exists — has not entered the widely available scientific or hobbyist record.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus mariae is not an established aquarium fish and is not found in the mainstream ornamental trade. Its maximum size of 12 in rules out typical community aquaria, and as a Cameroonian endemic it is not exported in meaningful numbers. Large African Labeobarbus that do occasionally appear in specialist collections require very large tanks — several hundred litres at minimum — with high filtration capacity, strong current, and open swimming space.

Water-chemistry tolerances for this species are unrecorded in the accessible literature. Given its West-Central African lowland to mid-elevation river habitat, moderately warm, well-oxygenated conditions with a near-neutral pH would be a reasonable working assumption, but no published husbandry guidance exists specifically for Labeobarbus mariae. Any keeper working with large West African barbs should prioritise sourcing fish from reputable, legally obtained stock.

Conservation

Labeobarbus mariae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in February 2009. The evaluation found no evidence of population decline sufficiently rapid or widespread to qualify the species for a threatened category, and the Wouri and Sanaga basins — while not pristine — were not identified as critically impacted at the time of assessment.

As a Cameroonian endemic confined to two river basins, the species has a naturally restricted range that gives it limited buffering against future threats. Ongoing pressures across Cameroon's river systems include increasing sedimentation from agricultural expansion and logging, artisanal and commercial fishing pressure, and infrastructure development. The 2009 IUCN assessment predates significant acceleration in these pressures, and the species' status should be viewed in that context; an updated evaluation drawing on more recent survey data would be valuable.
