Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus sandersi was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1912, with the parenthetical authority marking its subsequent transfer to the genus Labeobarbus from whatever original combination Boulenger used at description. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names, records the current combination as Labeobarbus sandersi (Boulenger, 1912). The species epithet honours an individual named Sanders, following the tradition of eponymous species dedications common in early twentieth-century ichthyological literature.
Labeobarbus is a large and taxonomically complex African genus of cyprinids, grouping many of the continent's bigger riverine barbs — fish historically placed under Barbus and related genera that have been progressively reallocated through modern phylogenetic work. The genus sits within the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Cyprininae. L. sandersi is placed within the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province, a coastal-river zone recognised for its relatively high endemism in freshwater fishes.
Morphology
Labeobarbus sandersi reaches a maximum recorded size of approximately 12 in standard length (14.5 in total length) according to FishBase, placing it in the mid-to-large range for the genus. The body plan is that of a robust river barb: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a well-developed caudal fin and the blunt-nosed profile characteristic of Labeobarbus.
A distinctive morphological feature recorded for the species is a strongly curved mouth — a trait that may reflect specialisation for scraping or sifting food from hard substrates. Notably, barbels are absent, which distinguishes it from many other large African barbs in which at least one pair of rostral or maxillary barbels is present. The lateral line carries 26–29 scales. Coloration in life is not well documented in the available literature; as with many Labeobarbus, the flanks are likely silvery to bronze with darker dorsal shading, but specific pattern data are sparse.
Habitat
Labeobarbus sandersi is a freshwater, benthopelagic species native to the Lower Guinea coastal drainages of west-central Africa. Its confirmed range spans the river systems of southern Cameroon, continuing through Equatorial Guinea and Gabon to the Chiloango River, which drains the Cabinda enclave of Angola. This coastal-forest zone receives high rainfall and supports rivers that are generally turbid to moderately clear, with substrates of sand, gravel and rock.
Specific water-chemistry parameters for L. sandersi have not been documented in the scientific literature reviewed. As a large river barb from equatorial west Africa, it likely tolerates a range of tropical conditions typical of lowland to submontane coastal rivers — warm temperatures, near-neutral pH, and variable hardness depending on local geology. Feeding

Labeobarbus sandersi is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever encountered in the ornamental trade. The species has no documented aquarium husbandry record.
Were it to be kept, the general requirements of large African river barbs would apply: a large, well-oxygenated tank with strong filtration, open swimming space, and robust décor that can withstand the activity of a big cyprinid. Diet would be omnivorous and undemanding. The species' endemism and limited trade presence mean it is primarily of interest as a subject for study rather than a display animal.
Conservation
Labeobarbus sandersi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment).
