Labeobarbus upembensis was described by Banister and Bailey in 1979 on the basis of material from Upemba National Park in the Katanga region of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The original description placed the fish in the genus Varicorhinus, a predominantly African genus characterised by a scraping mouth with a keratinized lower jaw edge — a phenotype that sets these barbs apart from the more generalised Labeobarbus species of the same drainage.
The synonymy of Varicorhinus with Labeobarbus was formalised following mitochondrial cytochrome b gene analysis published around 2010, which showed that Varicorhinus-mouth species were nested within Labeobarbus rather than forming a separate lineage. The valid combination accordingly became Labeobarbus upembensis (Banister & Bailey, 1979), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from the original genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for this placement. No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised.
Morphology
Labeobarbus upembensis is a member of the large-barb clade and shows the robust, moderately deep body form typical of the genus. The most distinctive morphological trait is its Varicorhinus-type mouth: a subterminal to inferior position with a keratinized cutting edge on the lower jaw and poorly developed, fleshy lips — an adaptation for grazing on aufwuchs and biofilm from hard substrates rather than picking invertebrates from the water column.
Detailed published morphometrics for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. As with other Labeobarbus of the Upper Congo, the species is expected to reach a sizeable adult length commensurate with the large-barb group, though precise maximum lengths from formal study are not confirmed in the available sources. The body is covered in moderately large cycloid scales in the typical cyprinid arrangement, and the fin formula follows the general Labeobarbus plan.
Habitat
The species is known from the Kalumengongo River, a tributary of the upper Lualaba within Upemba National Park, which forms part of the Upper Congo Basin drainage in the Katanga highlands of southern DRC. This is a landscape of savanna and miombo woodland cut by rivers that flow over ancient Precambrian rock, with stony and rocky substrates dominating the riverbeds.
Broader ecological work on Labeobarbus in the eastern Congo Basin indicates that the genus is strongly associated with rocky and stony substrates — cobbles, pebbles, and boulders — in fast-flowing rivers and streams. Environmental variables including electrical conductivity and water temperature are significant predictors of distribution within the genus. The Upper Lualaba headwaters sit at moderate elevation and are likely cool to seasonally warm, oligotrophic, and well-oxygenated — conditions that suit the scraping feeding mode of this species.
Feeding
The keratinized cutting edge of the lower jaw and the poorly developed lips of Labeobarbus upembensis are hallmarks of an aufwuchs or lithophilous grazing strategy. Species with this mouth morphology scrape periphyton, algae, diatoms, and associated microinvertebrates from rock surfaces — a feeding guild analogous to that of the mbuna cichlids of the Rift Valley lakes or the suckermouth catfishes of South America, though achieved through a very different anatomical solution.
In the Congo Basin context, such barbs are important components of the benthic energy pathway, converting primary production on hard substrates into biomass accessible to larger predators. No gut-content studies for this species are available in the sources examined, but the morphological evidence strongly constrains the trophic niche.
Mating
Like all barbs, Labeobarbus upembensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large river Labeobarbus are typically seasonal broadcast spawners tied to the hydrological cycle: rising waters at the onset of the wet season trigger upstream migrations to spawning grounds over gravel and cobble riffles, where eggs and milt are released together without nest construction, courtship territory, or pair bonding beyond the act of spawning itself.

Males typically show heightened colour and activity during the spawning season as they compete to drive gravid females over suitable substrate. There is no parental care of any kind.
Breeding
Labeobarbus upembensis scatters adhesive eggs over rocky and gravelly substrate during spawning events that are likely synchronised with seasonal flood pulses in the upper Lualaba catchment, as is typical of large fluvial barbs in Africa. The eggs receive no guarding or care from either parent; adults may consume eggs opportunistically after spawning.
This species has not been bred in captivity as far as the available literature reveals, and no aquarium breeding data exist. Its remote origin, specialised scraping mouth, and requirement for fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water would make captive reproduction challenging without replicating highland river conditions closely.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus upembensis is not an established aquarium species and is not available in the ornamental trade. Its restricted and remote provenance within a protected national park in the DRC, combined with the logistical challenges of export from that region, means that it has not entered the hobby and is unlikely to do so under current conditions.
For reference, comparable large Labeobarbus from African highland rivers require spacious, heavily filtered, highly oxygenated tanks with significant water movement to replicate the fast-flowing rocky rivers they inhabit. A scraping mouth type like this species demands a good growth of biofilm and algae on hard surfaces, supplemented with high-quality algae-based foods. Such fish are best suited to specialist facilities or public aquaria rather than the domestic hobby.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment has been published for Labeobarbus upembensis, so its global conservation status remains Not Evaluated. The species is known from within Upemba National Park, a protected area in the Katanga province of the DRC, which provides a degree of institutional habitat protection. The park encompasses a large area of the upper Lualaba watershed and has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Despite the park's protected status, the broader Upper Congo region faces pressures from artisanal mining, particularly in the copper and cobalt belt of Katanga, which can affect water quality through acid mine drainage and sediment loading in river systems. The highly endemic freshwater fauna of this part of the Congo Basin is understudied, and the true range, population size, and trajectory of this species are unknown. Its apparent restriction to a single river system within the park makes it potentially vulnerable to localised disturbance events.
