Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus versluysii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Max Holly in 1929. The species epithet honours Dr Jan Versluys (1873–1939), a Dutch zoologist and anatomist. The parenthetical citation — (Holly, 1929) — records that the species was originally described in a different genus and subsequently moved to Labeobarbus, the large African barb genus that accommodates the yellowfish and related big barbs of the continent's river systems.
The genus Labeobarbus has historically been a heterogeneous assemblage. African cyprinid taxonomy underwent substantial revision during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries as morphological and molecular work clarified lineages previously lumped into the broad genus Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the governing authority for valid names — records the current combination as Labeobarbus versluysii (Holly, 1929). FishBase assigns the species to FishBase ID 62121 and places it in the family Cyprinidae within the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province.
Morphology
Labeobarbus versluysii is a slender, moderately compressed cyprinid reaching approximately 4.5 in standard length. The dorsal profile carries one spiny ray followed by 12–13 soft rays; the anal fin has 8–9 soft rays. The lateral line is complete with 29–30 scales. The mouth is inferior to subinferior in position — oriented downward rather than terminal — and bears two pairs of well-developed barbels, a hallmark of the genus used in grubbing through substrate and manipulating food items.
As a pelagic-tending freshwater cyprinid, the body is streamlined for open-water schooling rather than the deep, laterally compressed shape of some ornamental barbs. Specific colouration details are sparse in available accounts, but genus relatives are typically silvery to brassy on the flank with darker dorsal coloration. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in the literature for this species; females in related large barbs are typically deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Lower Guinea freshwater province of Cameroon, known only from the Wouri, Sanaga, and Nyong river basins — all west-facing drainages flowing to the Atlantic coast of central West Africa. These are forest-associated river systems with relatively low elevation in their lower courses, supporting a diverse and largely endemic ichthyofauna.
Detailed physicochemical data specific to L. versluysii are sparse in the literature. The Wouri, Sanaga, and Nyong are equatorial rivers with warm, soft to moderately mineralised water, flowing through lowland tropical forest. Related Labeobarbus species across sub-Saharan Africa associate with a range of river environments — from cool, fast highland streams to warmer lowland reaches — and the Cameroonian endemics of coastal drainages occupy the warmer, lower-gradient part of that spectrum. FishBase records the species as pelagic in freshwater, consistent with open-water schooling in the mid-water zone of rivers.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding study has been published for Labeobarbus versluysii. The genus as a whole encompasses omnivorous to algivorous bottom feeders, and the inferior mouth with barbels is well suited to foraging along the substrate — picking up invertebrates, algae, detritus, and plant material.
Conspecific and closely related Labeobarbus species in other African river systems have been documented eating a broad range of items: aquatic invertebrates including insect larvae, small molluscs, zooplankton, filamentous algae, and fine organic detritus. It is reasonable to infer that L. versluysii is a similarly opportunistic omnivore, exploiting seasonally variable food sources in its river habitats, though this remains to be confirmed by direct observation.
Mating
Specific spawning observations for Labeobarbus versluysii have not been published. Like all members of the family Cyprinidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner without a nest or parental investment. In the Cyprinidae broadly and in Labeobarbus specifically, mating involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through the water column or over suitable substrate, where eggs and milt are released together.
Larger river barbs and mahseer-type cyprinids often undertake seasonal upstream migrations to spawn over gravel beds or among submerged root masses during the rainy season, and this pattern is plausible for a river-dwelling Cameroonian Labeobarbus. No pair bond is formed, and no territory is maintained beyond the brief spawning act.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding account for Labeobarbus versluysii has been recorded in the available literature, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade. By analogy with the genus and family, reproduction is expected to follow the typical cyprinid pattern: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered over gravel, cobble, or aquatic vegetation, with no parental care whatsoever. Adults of many Labeobarbus will consume their own eggs if they remain accessible.
In the wild, spawning in equatorial African river barbs is commonly linked to the onset of the wet season, when rising water levels, increased flow, and improved food availability cue reproductive activity. Fecundity data and developmental timing are not available for this species.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus versluysii is not a species encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade and is essentially unknown as an aquarium fish. Its small size for the genus — approximately 4.5 in SL — would in principle make it more manageable than the largest Labeobarbus species, but its obscurity, restricted natural range, and absence from collection or breeding programmes mean it has not been established in captivity.
For the specialist interested in West African riverine cyprinids, the husbandry requirements are likely similar to other small-to-medium Labeobarbus: a roomy, well-oxygenated aquarium with moderate current, a diet of varied sinking foods supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates, and water chemistry consistent with soft, warm equatorial river conditions. Given the data gaps for this species, any keeper working with it would be contributing original natural history observations.
Conservation
Labeobarbus versluysii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The species' populations across its Cameroonian range are not considered to be in significant decline, and it does not appear to face imminent extinction risk under current conditions.
Nonetheless, its status as a narrow endemic — confined to just three adjacent coastal river basins in Cameroon — means that localised threats could have outsized consequences. The Wouri, Sanaga, and Nyong basins are subject to ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and degradation of riparian zones, as well as dam construction and water extraction projects that alter river hydrology. The ichthyofaunas of the Lower Guinea province include many endemic and poorly documented species; continued monitoring of this region's freshwater biodiversity is warranted.
