Pethia tiantian is a small mountain-stream barb from the extreme north of Myanmar, collected in the foothills of the Himalayas in Kachin State where clear, fast-flowing tributaries drain toward the upper Irrawaddy system. Originally described as Puntius tiantian by Kullander and Fang in 2005, it was transferred to the genus Pethia following the 2012 revision of South and Southeast Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda and colleagues. Reaching around 2 in standard length, it inhabits cold, well-oxygenated streams over rocky and gravelly substrates — habitat that distinguishes it sharply from the warmer lowland barbs of the Irrawaddy mainstream. The IUCN lists it as Near Threatened, reflecting a restricted range and the vulnerability of montane freshwater fish to land-use and hydrological change.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia tiantian was described by Sven O. Kullander and Fang Fang in 2005 under the original combination Puntius tiantian, in a paper introducing two new species from northern Myanmar published in Copeia 2005(2):290–302. At the time of description, the catch-all genus Puntius accommodated a diverse array of South and Southeast Asian barbs with little resolved phylogenetic structure.

The current placement in Pethia follows the landmark 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage, which dismembered the old Puntius complex into several more natural genera — Pethia, Systomus, Dawkinsia and others. Pethia, named for Rohan Pethiyagoda himself, groups the smaller, more compressed, typically spotted or banded barbs of the Indian subcontinent and adjacent Myanmar. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the current valid combination as Pethia tiantian (Kullander & Fang, 2005), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the genus transfer. Hobbyist and older scientific literature may still refer to this fish as Puntius tiantian.

Morphology

Pethia tiantian is a slender, modestly sized barb, reaching approximately 2 in in standard length. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed with a relatively high body and a small, subterminal mouth suited to picking food from hard surfaces and the water column. The coloration in life has not been described in great detail in the literature, but the combination of clear, rocky-stream habitat and membership in Pethia — a genus that includes several attractively patterned species — suggests it is likely marked with at least some lateral spotting or banding characteristic of the group.

The species shares the typical cyprinid complement of a forked tail, a dorsal fin placed centrally over the body, and an absence of jaw teeth, with pharyngeal teeth performing the mechanical processing of food. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in published accounts, but females in gravid condition are typically broader-bodied in small barbs of this type.

Habitat

Pethia tiantian is known from mountain streams in the Putao area of Kachin State, the northernmost region of Myanmar. Specific collection sites include the Nan Hto Chaung and the Mali Hka river system — clear-water tributaries that rise in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas at elevations well above the Irrawaddy plain. The epithet tiantian ("close to heaven") refers directly to this montane origin.

The Seriously Fish profile describes the habitat as fast-moving streams with rocky and gravelly substrate, clear and essentially colourless water, and well-developed marginal vegetation but no submerged aquatic plants in the collection localities. Water chemistry recorded at collection was close to neutral — around pH 6.5 — with a low hardness of approximately 54 mg/L and a cool temperature of about 68 °F, consistent with high-elevation, well-oxygenated running water. This cold, clear profile sets the species well apart from the warm, lowland barb fauna of the Irrawaddy delta.

Feeding

In its mountain-stream habitat Pethia tiantian forages opportunistically across the substrate and water column. Seriously Fish documents the wild diet as comprising diatoms, algae and organic detritus scraped from rock surfaces, supplemented by small invertebrates including insects, worms and crustaceans taken from the benthos or drift. This mixed algal and invertebrate diet is characteristic of small rheophilic barbs inhabiting clear, productive montane streams where periphyton covers exposed rock surfaces.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp readily, and does best when these are combined with a good-quality flake or micro-pellet that includes vegetable or algal content to replicate the plant-based component of the natural diet. Providing some algal growth in the tank or supplementing with spirulina-based foods helps maintain condition.

Mating

Pethia tiantian is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner universal among barbs. No specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for this species in the wild or in the aquarium in the published literature, but the genus Pethia breeds in the typical cyprinid fashion: a conditioned male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair press together briefly, and adhesive eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the water column or onto the substrate.

No pair bond, territory, nest, or parental recognition exists beyond the spawning act itself. Adults pose a predation risk to the scattered eggs immediately after spawning, which in the wild are dispersed by current onto and among rocks and gravel, far from any adult that might eat them.

Breeding

No detailed captive breeding account for Pethia tiantian has been published, and it remains an uncommon fish in the hobby. By analogy with closely related Pethia species, conditioning on live and frozen foods and providing a cooler water temperature — reflecting the species' montane origins, around 64–72 °F — would be appropriate starting points. Fine-leaved plant material or a spawning mop over a mesh-covered base to catch sinking eggs away from adults would suit a trial spawning setup.

Eggs are adhesive and small; in other Pethia species they hatch within 24–48 hours at appropriate temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a further 2–3 days later. First foods for the fry would be infusoria or commercial fry food, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fish grow. The relative scarcity of this species in captivity means that successful propagation would contribute meaningfully to its availability without pressure on wild populations.

In the aquarium

Pethia tiantian is an uncommon fish in the trade, encountered only sporadically. Its cool-water, fast-stream origins mean that a standard tropical community aquarium kept at 75–82 °F is not appropriate; this species requires cooler, well-oxygenated, well-filtered water around 64–72 °F with a moderate current and high dissolved oxygen. A tank arranged with smooth river stones, a sandy or fine-gravel substrate and minimal decoration apart from a few pieces of driftwood and some marginal planting would best reflect its natural habitat.

Seriously Fish characterises the species as peaceful and community-safe, consistent with the generally non-aggressive character of Pethia. It should be kept in a group of at least six to allow normal shoaling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Suitable tankmates are other cool-water stream fish with similar temperature and oxygen requirements. Feeding is straightforward — a varied diet of small live and frozen foods plus quality flakes with plant content keeps the fish in good condition.

Conservation

Pethia tiantian is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The designation reflects its naturally restricted range — the Putao foothills of Kachin State in far northern Myanmar are geographically isolated, and the species is not known to occur widely outside this area. A small range inherently limits the total population size and makes the species vulnerable to localised disturbance.

Kachin State has experienced significant land-use change from logging, road construction and subsistence agriculture in its river catchments, all of which can degrade the clear, fast-flowing streams on which this species depends through sedimentation and changes in flow regime. The armed conflict that has intermittently affected the region creates challenges for conservation monitoring. While the area is relatively remote and industrial development pressure has historically been lower than in the Irrawaddy lowlands, the combination of restricted range and an insecure habitat base places this species in a precarious position, and continued monitoring of its population status is warranted.
