Poropuntius schanicus is a freshwater cyprinid described by George Albert Boulenger in 1893 from the Salween basin of Myanmar, one of the larger Southeast Asian river systems draining from the Tibetan Plateau through the Shan Hills into the Andaman Sea. It belongs to the genus Poropuntius, a group of medium to large Asian barbs characterised by pored lateral-line scales and a robust, moderately compressed body. Little biological data have been published specifically for this species, and its IUCN conservation status is Data Deficient, reflecting how poorly it remains known to science despite more than a century since its original description.

Taxonomy & naming

Poropuntius schanicus was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1893, with the authority recorded simply as Boulenger, 1893 in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid fish names. The type locality is the Salween drainage in Myanmar, historically referred to in colonial literature as the Shan States — the epithet schanicus reflects the Shan people and their territory in eastern Myanmar. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Poropuntius schanicus (Boulenger, 1893) within the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Cyprininae.

The genus Poropuntius was erected to accommodate a cluster of Southeast Asian barbs distinguished from the old catch-all genus Puntius partly by osteological and meristic characters, including details of the pored lateral-line scales that give the genus its name (Greek poros, pore or passage; Latin punctum, a marked point). A 2024 molecular revision of Poropuntius published in ZooKeys confirmed the complexity of this group and resolved relationships among related species, noting features such as 29–31 lateral-line scales and a concave dorsal fin margin in comparative taxa from Southeast Asian freshwater drainages. Where P. schanicus was carried in older literature under Barbus or Puntius, the current valid placement is Poropuntius.

Morphology

Specific morphological measurements for Poropuntius schanicus are sparse in the published literature. The genus Poropuntius encompasses medium to moderately large barbs; related species in the 2024 ZooKeys revision reached standard lengths around 5.5 in (total length approximately 5 in for comparative taxa), which gives a rough sense of scale, though measurements for P. schanicus itself have not been published in accessible literature.

As a member of Poropuntius, the species is expected to share the family's characteristic fusiform, somewhat compressed body, a moderately large head, and a well-developed lateral line with pored scales. The genus is benthopelagic in habit, spending time at or near the substrate in freshwater environments. Detailed counts of scales, fin rays and other diagnostic characters from the original 1893 description have not been replicated in the secondary sources reviewed.

Habitat

Poropuntius schanicus is native to the Salween basin in Southeast Asia, centred on Myanmar. The Salween (also known as the Thanlwin) is one of the longest free-flowing rivers in mainland Southeast Asia, originating on the Tibetan Plateau and cutting through the Shan Hills before entering the Andaman Sea. It is characterised by a mix of swift upland sections and broader lowland reaches, with seasonally variable flow driven by the Asian monsoon.

FishBase classifies the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, with a tropical ecology. Specific water-chemistry parameters — temperature, pH, hardness — have not been recorded in the sources reviewed. Given the Salween's geology and the general character of Shan Hills rivers, the water is likely moderately hard and broadly neutral to slightly alkaline compared with the soft blackwaters of Sundaland, but this remains inference rather than measured data. The species' precise microhabitat preferences (river channel, tributaries, floodplain pools) are undocumented.

Feeding

No dietary studies have been published specifically for Poropuntius schanicus. Members of the genus and the broader cyprinid assemblages of the Salween basin are typically omnivorous, taking a combination of benthic invertebrates, algae, plant material and organic detritus according to their body size and microhabitat. The benthopelagic classification in FishBase is consistent with a fish that forages at and near the substrate.

In the absence of species-specific data, the feeding biology of P. schanicus should be inferred cautiously from what is known of ecologically similar Poropuntius and medium-sized Cyprininae in comparable mainland Southeast Asian river systems.

Mating

No reproductive observations have been reported for Poropuntius schanicus in the available literature. As a cyprinid barb, it is expected to follow the family-wide pattern of egg-scattering without parental care. In barbs generally, males in breeding condition pursue gravid females through the water column or over the substrate, pressing alongside the female during brief spawning acts in which eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

There is no nest construction, no territory held beyond the moment of courtship, and no pair bond. Eggs are adhesive and adhere to the substrate, vegetation or gravel following release. Adults show no interest in the eggs after spawning. Seasonal spawning cues in the Salween basin likely follow the monsoon cycle, with rising water temperatures and increased river flow in the wet season triggering reproductive behaviour, as observed in other large-river cyprinids of mainland Southeast Asia.

Breeding

Breeding details for Poropuntius schanicus are undocumented; the species is not established in the aquarium trade and has not been bred in captivity under controlled conditions as far as can be determined from the available literature. Based on the biology of the genus and the broader Cyprininae, spawning is expected to be an egg-scattering event with no parental care — eggs scattered over gravel, substrate or among submerged vegetation, then left entirely without guarding or attendance by either parent.

Fecundity, incubation period and larval development rates are unknown. Large-river barbs of similar body size in mainland Southeast Asia are typically broadcast spawners that migrate to spawning grounds during the monsoon flood pulse, releasing large numbers of eggs into the current or over gravel beds. Whether P. schanicus follows a migratory or more localised spawning strategy has not been investigated.

In the aquarium

Poropuntius schanicus is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the hobby. No dedicated husbandry profiles have been published, and the species does not appear to have entered the ornamental trade in meaningful numbers. Its habitat in the Salween basin of Myanmar — a river system with relatively limited commercial collecting compared to more accessible Southeast Asian river systems — has kept it out of routine aquarium circulation.

For anyone who encounters the species, basic cyprinid care principles would apply: clean, well-oxygenated water, a spacious aquarium proportionate to the fish's adult size, and a diet of varied prepared and live or frozen foods. Water chemistry should ideally reflect the broadly neutral, moderately hard character of Salween tributaries. Given the absence of captive-breeding records, wild-caught specimens would be the only source, which raises both supply and conservation considerations.

Conservation

Poropuntius schanicus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a status that reflects the absence of sufficient information to make a direct or indirect assessment of its extinction risk. The species is known from the Salween basin in Myanmar, a drainage that has faced growing pressure from hydropower development — a series of dams have been proposed or constructed along the main stem and tributaries, raising concerns for migratory and flow-dependent fish species across the basin.

Myanmar's freshwater fish fauna more broadly suffers from chronic under-surveying, and many species described in the colonial era have not been the subject of modern fieldwork that would allow population estimates or range delineation. Until targeted surveys clarify P. schanicus's distribution, abundance and ecological requirements, its true conservation status cannot be determined. The Data Deficient assessment should not be read as indicating the species is necessarily secure; it indicates only that the data needed to evaluate its status are lacking.
