Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius shanensis was described by Sunder Lal Hora and D. D. Mukerji in 1934 and named for the Shan States — the highland plateau of eastern Myanmar where the type specimen was collected, specifically from the Lawksawk Canal at Lawksawk in the southern Shan States. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid combination as Poropuntius shanensis (Hora & Mukerji, 1934), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species has been moved out of its original genus.
Like many Asian barbs, the species accumulated synonyms under the successive catch-all genera that dominated cyprinid classification through much of the twentieth century. It has been placed at various times under Puntius, Barbodes, and Systomus before settling in Poropuntius. The genus Poropuntius was reviewed in depth by Tyson Roberts in a paper published through the Siam Society, which resolved the boundaries of the genus across the Salween, Tenasserim, and Mekong drainages. No subspecies are currently recognised.
Morphology
Poropuntius shanensis is a moderately sized barb reaching approximately 5 in in standard length (SL), placing it in the mid-range of the genus. Detailed meristic data for the species remain limited in the accessible literature, but members of Poropuntius generally share the elongate, moderately compressed body plan typical of fast-water stream barbs — deeper than small shoaling barbs of still or sluggish water, but not as deep-bodied as pond-adapted cyprinids.
The genus name Poropuntius refers to pores or sensory structures, reflecting features of the lateral line system that help distinguish this group from the broader Puntius complex. Beyond size and the general body form expected of a Salween-basin stream barb, coloration and specific fin counts for P. shanensis are not comprehensively documented in sources available for this article.
Habitat
Sources indicate that Poropuntius shanensis inhabits fast-flowing rivers and streams with rocky beds — the upland stream type characteristic of the southern Shan Plateau, where rivers descend from highland terrain toward the Salween drainage. This is a benthopelagic species associated with the running-water zone rather than still backwaters, ponds, or floodplains.
FishBase records a temperature of 77 °F and a pH of 6.5 with a hardness of around 5 dH for the species, consistent with moderately soft, slightly acidic tropical highland stream water. The Shan States sit at elevation and drain predominantly through the Salween system, where water is generally cool relative to lowland Myanmar rivers, clear, and low in dissolved salts — quite different from the blackwater or turbid lowland habitats of Sundaland barbs. Exact depth and microhabitat preferences are not documented in the available literature.
Feeding
No specific dietary study appears to have been published for Poropuntius shanensis. By analogy with ecologically comparable barbs of fast-flowing rocky streams, the species likely forages on a mixed diet of benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — scraped or picked from the rocky substrate, together with algae and periphyton, and possibly small amounts of plant material and detritus carried in the current.
In the aquarium, members of Poropuntius are not widely kept, and feeding reports are sparse. A varied diet of quality sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and some vegetable supplement would be appropriate for a benthopelagic stream barb of this size and body form.
Mating
Specific observations of courtship behaviour in Poropuntius shanensis have not been published in the sources available for this article. As with barbs generally, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Males in breeding condition would be expected to drive gravid females through vegetation or over the rocky substrate, releasing eggs and milt together in brief, repeated pairings.
No pair bond, territory, or nest is formed. Dominant males likely display heightened colour during the spawning period. Poropuntius shanensis is not established in the ornamental trade and has not been bred in aquaria to any documented extent. Based on its membership in the broader barb assemblage, it is expected to scatter non-adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over a rocky or gravelly substrate in flowing water, with no parental care — adults would be indifferent to eggs and fry after spawning.
Wild breeding seasons, fecundity, egg size, incubation time, and larval development remain undescribed in published sources. Any captive breeding attempt would likely require replicating the cool, well-oxygenated, fast-moving water conditions of its native Shan highland streams.

Poropuntius shanensis is not a species encountered in the mainstream aquarium hobby, and no established husbandry literature exists for it. Based on its native habitat — fast-flowing, rocky, moderately soft and slightly acidic highland streams at around 77 °F — it would require a well-filtered, well-oxygenated aquarium with a moderate to strong current, a rocky or gravel substrate, and clean, low-nutrient water.
At nearly 5 in standard length it is not a small fish. A spacious tank with ample swimming room and companions of similar temperament and size would be appropriate. Its rarity in the trade means that captive specimens, if obtainable at all, would most likely derive from wild-caught imports. Little is documented about its compatibility, behaviour in groups, or long-term captive requirements.
Conservation
Poropuntius shanensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. This status reflects not that the species is known to be secure, but that insufficient survey data exist to determine whether its population is stable, declining, or threatened. The Shan States of Myanmar are a region where access for biological surveys has been limited, and freshwater fish inventories remain incomplete.
The species is confined to the highland stream systems of the southern Shan Plateau, placing it in a geographically restricted range. General threats to freshwater fish in upland Myanmar include habitat disturbance from gold mining, artisanal fishing pressure, sedimentation from deforestation on surrounding slopes, and the long-term effects of hydropower development on the Salween and its tributaries. Until targeted surveys clarify the species' population size and range, its actual conservation status cannot be determined.
