Taxonomy & naming
Puntius pugio was described by Sven O. Kullander in 2008 in the paper "Five new species of Puntius from Myanmar (Teleostei: Cyprinidae)," published in Ichthyological Explorations of Freshwaters (volume 19, number 1). The species is placed in the genus Puntius and the original authority is Kullander, 2008; the parenthetical form in citations reflects the formal nomenclatural convention when an author describes a new species directly into Puntius.
The old genus Puntius was a large, polyphyletic catch-all for small South and Southeast Asian barbs. The landmark revision by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012) split much of it into several new genera — including Pethia, Dawkinsia, Haludaria, and others. Puntius pugio, described from northern Myanmar after that revision was underway, is retained in Puntius under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names. Its exact phylogenetic position within the residual Puntius has not been fully resolved.
The specific epithet pugio is Latin for "dagger," apparently alluding to a morphological feature noted in the original description.
Morphology
Puntius pugio is a miniature barb, with the type specimens reaching a maximum of 1.5 in standard length (SL) — roughly 1.5 in — making it one of the smaller members of its genus. As with most small cyprinids in its group, it possesses the laterally compressed, moderately deep body typical of stream-dwelling Puntius, with a small terminal or slightly subterminal mouth suited to picking fine invertebrates and organic material from the substrate and water column.
Detailed meristic and morphological data are recorded in Kullander's 2008 original description, which remains the primary source for the species' anatomical characters. Published photographs and hobbyist records of the live fish are essentially absent, and nothing reliable can be stated here about live coloration beyond what the original scientific description provides.
Habitat
Puntius pugio is known from small streams around Myitkyina and the Lake Indawgyi area in Kachin State, northern Myanmar. These are rainforest-associated watercourses draining into the upper Irrawaddy basin. Lake Indawgyi itself is a large, shallow lowland lake; the tributary streams in the surrounding hills are likely clear, well-oxygenated, and moderately cool relative to the lowland norm.
The region sits at relatively low elevation in the Himalayan foothills, with a monsoonal climate producing strong seasonal variation in water level and flow. Water in the surrounding streams is expected to be soft to moderately hard and near-neutral in pH, consistent with the geology of the upper Irrawaddy catchment. No detailed physicochemical data have been published for the specific collection sites of P. pugio. General care guidelines for Puntius barbs suggest pH around 6.5–7.0 and temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F (72–79 °F) as suitable for small stream species from this region.
Feeding
No specific feeding studies have been published for Puntius pugio. Small stream barbs of its size and body form are typically opportunistic omnivores, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — along with algae, detritus, and any terrestrial invertebrates that fall into the water.
In an aquarium setting, a diet of good-quality small-particle flakes or micro-pellets supplemented with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and micro-worms would be appropriate for a barb of this size. The extremely limited hobby presence of P. pugio means no first-hand feeding accounts are available.
Mating
Puntius pugio, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific observations of courtship or spawning behaviour have been documented for this species in the wild or in captivity. Based on the biology of closely related small Puntius, courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or across fine substrate, with eggs and milt released together during brief side-by-side contact.
There is no pair bond, no territory maintained beyond the immediate moment of spawning, and no nest of any kind. Adults show no attraction to or interest in the eggs after they are scattered. Male condition and intensity of coloration typically peak during the breeding season.
Breeding
No successful aquarium breeding of Puntius pugio has been reported in the accessible literature or hobbyist records. Given its close relationship to other small Puntius, the general approach used for similar species would apply: a separate shallow breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water, a fine-leaved plant or spawning mop, and a substrate mesh or layer of marbles to protect scattered eggs from the adults.
Eggs are adhesive and fall among plants or onto the bottom. Adults must be removed promptly after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs. In closely related species, hatching occurs within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days after that.
In the aquarium
Puntius pugio is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a rarely collected Myanmar endemic described from a small number of specimens, and no trade imports have been documented in accessible hobbyist records. Should it become available, care would follow the pattern for small, shoaling stream barbs: a group of at least six individuals, a tank with gentle to moderate current, good oxygenation, some fine-leaved planting, and water in the pH 6.5–7.0 range at 72–79 °F (72–79 °F).
Its small adult size — under 1.5 in SL — would make it suitable for a smaller aquarium and compatible with other diminutive, peaceful stream fish. Without established hobbyist experience, all aquarium advice for P. pugio is extrapolated from related species rather than observed directly.
Conservation
Puntius pugio has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. It is currently listed as Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known only from the Myitkyina region and Lake Indawgyi watershed in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — a restricted range that is inherently a risk factor for a small stream fish.
Kachin State has experienced significant deforestation, agricultural expansion, and infrastructural development, all of which threaten the integrity of small stream habitats. Lake Indawgyi is a Ramsar-designated wetland with some degree of formal protection, but the surrounding catchment streams have not been systematically surveyed or protected. Given the tiny known range and the absence of any monitoring data, the conservation status of P. pugio is genuinely unknown, and a formal IUCN assessment would be a valuable step toward understanding the population's security.
