Like all members of the genus it is a secretive, nocturnal micro-predator that spends the day wedged under submerged wood or leaf litter, emerging after dark to forage for invertebrates. What makes the auchenipterids genuinely remarkable — and separates them from almost every other catfish — is their use of internal fertilisation: the male transfers sperm directly via a modified anal fin, the female stores the sperm for days to weeks, and then spawns fertile eggs without any further contact with a male.

The tank must include multiple pieces of driftwood, caves, or tight bark crevices where the fish can wedge itself and feel secure; without these hiding places it will remain stressed. A species or biotope setup with other small, non-aggressive South American fishes is ideal. Tank size can be modest given the compact adult size of the genus, but water quality must be maintained carefully: like all naked-skinned catfish, Tatia is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to many proprietary medications.
