Taxonomy & naming
Tatia intermedia was described by the Austrian-born ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1877, originally placed under a different combination before being transferred to the genus Tatia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Tatia intermedia as the valid name, with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally described in another genus.
The genus Tatia belongs to the family Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfishes or wood cats — a family confined to South America and well-known to ichthyologists for its internal fertilisation. Within Auchenipteridae, Tatia is the largest genus and contains small-to-medium species with a strongly mottled or spotted colour pattern. Tatia intermedia is superficially similar to the galaxy wood cat T. galaxias but differs in having more numerous spots that appear grey rather than bright white, and it is separated from related species by meristic and morphological features examined at description.
Morphology
Tatia intermedia is a slender, somewhat cylindrical catfish with a broad, depressed head, a moderately long snout, and three pairs of barbels: one long maxillary pair and two shorter pairs on the lower jaw. The body is scaleless — like all catfish it carries no scales, only naked skin — and the ground colour is brownish to grey-brown, patterned with irregular greyish spots across the flanks and head.
Adult standard length is recorded at 4.5–5 in, making this one of the smaller auchenipterids in the hobby. The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff, serrated spine that can lock erect; while the species is not reported to be venomous, these spines readily tangle in a net and can jab a careless hand. Males develop a modified, thickened anal fin that functions as the intromittent organ used in copulation; this sexual difference is the surest way to sex the fish once mature.
Habitat
In the wild Tatia intermedia occupies the lower reaches and middle stretches of several large Amazon-basin tributaries — the Araguaia, Tocantins, Xingu and Capim rivers in Brazil — as well as coastal drainages of Suriname and the Essequibo River system in Guyana. These are predominantly warm lowland rivers with soft to moderately soft water and a pH ranging from mildly acidic to near-neutral.
The fish shelters among submerged driftwood, root tangles and leaf litter during daylight hours and emerges to forage after dark. It is a benthic species tied closely to the structural complexity of the riverbed: without wood or other cover it is under continuous stress. Water temperature in its natural range runs from roughly 70–82 °F, and pH from approximately 5.0 to 7.5 — typical of the softer, slightly tannin-stained rivers draining the Guiana and Brazilian shields.
Feeding
Tatia intermedia is a nocturnal benthic micro-predator and omnivore. In the wild it forages after dark across the riverbed and among submerged wood for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small worms, microcrustaceans — and likely consumes organic detritus when larger prey is unavailable.
In the aquarium it adjusts readily to prepared and frozen foods. Bloodworm, mosquito larvae and brine shrimp are accepted with enthusiasm; sinking catfish pellets and tablets are taken once the fish is settled. Because it is strongly nocturnal it competes poorly for food in a busy daytime community: feeding after lights-out ensures it receives adequate nutrition without being out-competed by diurnal tankmates.
Mating
The reproductive biology of Tatia intermedia is one of the most striking features of the genus. Auchenipterid catfishes practise internal fertilisation — genuinely rare among teleost fishes — and Tatia is the best-documented genus for this behaviour. The male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ; during mating he uses it to introduce sperm directly into the female's reproductive tract.
The female then stores the received sperm internally, sometimes for several weeks, before using them to fertilise her eggs at spawning. This means a female isolated from males after a single mating event can subsequently lay fertile eggs with no male present at the time of spawning — a fact that surprises aquarists who observe apparent "spontaneous" egg-laying. Mating itself is brief and may occur with little obvious courtship; in an aquarium setting with mixed sexes, copulation can happen without the keeper noticing.
Breeding
Tatia intermedia has been bred in captivity, though not commonly. Successful spawnings have been reported in planted tanks with adequate wood and cave-style hiding places, soft and slightly acidic water, and a gentle current. The male, identifiable by his thickened and modified anal fin, must be present for an initial mating; after fertilisation the female may spawn without further contact with a male.
Eggs are scattered or deposited in a sheltered location; there is no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding and no extended parental care — the female lays and the eggs develop without tending. Hatching and rearing the small fry requires appropriately fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry food. Because the sperm-storage mechanism means a female may spawn repeatedly after a single mating, keepers sometimes observe multiple spawning events from an apparently isolated female — this is normal auchenipterid biology, not parthenogenesis.
In the aquarium
Tatia intermedia is an undemanding and peaceful catfish suited to a soft-water South American community. Its adult size of around 5 in makes it manageable in a medium-sized tank — a 100-litre or larger aquarium is appropriate — but like all catfish it must never be assumed to stay small; it grows to its full adult length, and the tank must accommodate that from the outset.
Two points of catfish husbandry apply here. First, Tatia intermedia is scaleless: its naked skin is more permeable than scaled fish to copper-based medications and certain other treatments, so dose conservatively — half-dose is the standard advice for scaleless catfish exposed to copper or organophosphate treatments. Second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines easily tangle in a net and can puncture skin; always move this fish in a container, not a net. Provide a soft sand substrate, several pieces of driftwood or hollow wood for daytime cover, and subdued lighting. Gentle filtration with good oxygenation, pH 5.0–7.5, and a temperature of 70–82 °F replicate the river conditions it inhabits. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to swallow and is generally compatible with other soft-water South American species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Tatia intermedia as Least Concern. The species has a reasonably broad distribution across several major South American river systems — the Araguaia-Tocantins drainage, the Xingu and Capim rivers, coastal rivers of Suriname, and the Essequibo in Guyana — and is not known to face imminent range-wide threat.
The broader pressures affecting lowland Amazonian and Guianan rivers — siltation from agriculture and cattle ranching, dam construction altering river hydrology, and deforestation removing riparian wood that forms the essential habitat structure for driftwood catfishes — are relevant context for any species in this group. Most aquarium stock appears to be wild-collected, as captive breeding remains rare, so sustained ornamental trade from restricted wild populations could warrant monitoring even at Least Concern status.
