Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora everetti was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1895, with the type locality given as Palawan Island, Philippines. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for its valid name, which remains Rasbora everetti Boulenger, 1895 — the authority is unparenthesised because the species has not been transferred from its original genus.
A persistent source of confusion in the aquarium hobby is the existence of Nematabramis everetti (Boulenger, 1894), a separate species endemic to Borneo (Sarawak, Sabah and East Kalimantan) that was described one year earlier and also bears the epithet everetti. Nematabramis everetti is a larger fish — reaching 3.5–4 in SL — that inhabits Bornean streams ranging from fast-flowing rapids to slower forest tributaries and is not closely related to the Philippine Rasbora everetti. The two have been confused in the trade literature, partly because Boulenger described both and partly because the epithet and general body form invite conflation. The present article concerns the Philippine species only.
The genus Rasbora has been considerably restructured since the 1990s: Kottelat and Witte (1999) erected Trigonostigma, Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora and other segregates from what was formerly a vast paraphyletic Rasbora, and subsequent work has carved off further genera. Rasbora in its current circumscription (following Catalog of Fishes) remains a large but more coherent assemblage of cyprinids across South and Southeast Asia. R. everetti belongs to this core group and retains the name Rasbora.
Morphology
Rasbora everetti is a slender, laterally compressed cyprinid reaching approximately 2.5 in in standard length, placing it among the medium-sized members of its genus. The body profile is elongate and streamlined in the manner typical of open-water Rasbora species, with a moderately pointed snout and a subterminal mouth.
Detailed colour pattern data for R. everetti in the published literature are sparse. As a Philippine Rasbora, it likely shows the silvery-to-olive lateral flanks and dark mid-lateral stripe or lateral line markings characteristic of many species in the genus, but specific colouration should be verified against freshly collected material rather than hobby or trade sources, which occasionally conflate this species with the Bornean Nematabramis everetti. The species is benthopelagic in habit.
Habitat
Rasbora everetti is endemic to Palawan Island, the elongated southwestern island of the Philippine archipelago that forms a biogeographic bridge between the Philippines and Borneo. Palawan's freshwater fish fauna has stronger Sundaic affinities than the rest of the Philippines, and several of its cyprinid species reflect close relationships with Bornean congeners.
Specific habitat data for R. everetti are limited in the published literature. As a freshwater benthopelagic species native to a tropical island, it is presumed to inhabit streams and rivers in the forested interior of Palawan, likely in clear to moderately turbid flowing water over gravel or sand substrates. Palawan's rivers tend to be short and swift-flowing from the central mountain range, with water chemistry that varies from slightly soft and near-neutral in the forested uplands to more variable in the lowland reaches. Detailed field-collected water chemistry data for sites where R. everetti occurs are not on record.
Feeding
Rasbora everetti is presumed to feed in the manner typical of medium-sized Rasbora: an opportunistic omnivore and invertebrate predator taking small insects, crustaceans, worms, and other aquatic invertebrates, supplemented by plant material, algae, and organic detritus. FishBase records no species-specific gut-content data for R. everetti.
In the aquarium, fish of this size and build are straightforward to feed on good-quality small pellets or flake, augmented with live and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp to maintain condition. The feeding behaviour typical of the genus — active, mid-water foraging throughout the day — means R. everetti should be kept with appropriately bold or fast-moving tankmates that can compete for food.
Mating
Like the great majority of Rasbora species, R. everetti is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No species-specific courtship or reproductive behaviour has been documented in the scientific literature, but the genus pattern is consistent: a gravid female is pursued by one or more males through open water or vegetation, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, close lateral presses. There is no pair bond and no territory.
Spawning in Philippine stream fishes is often linked to seasonal water-level fluctuations and rain events that replenish and cool the water, mimicking conditions typical of the monsoon cycle. The non-adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs fall to the bottom or among plants, where adults will consume them if they remain accessible.
Breeding
No detailed captive breeding records for Rasbora everetti appear in the accessible literature, and the species is not commonly encountered in the aquarium trade. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related Rasbora species of similar size, spawning can be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: a separate, clean tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom, slightly raised temperature with the addition of fresh conditioned water, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Females of comparable Rasbora species release several hundred eggs per spawning session. Eggs hatch in roughly two to three days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae appearing a few days later. First foods would be infusoria or commercially prepared fry foods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care is provided at any stage.
In the aquarium
Rasbora everetti is not a commonly kept species and does not regularly appear in the mainstream aquarium trade. Aquarists encountering it should treat it as a medium Rasbora requiring a spacious, well-filtered tank with gentle to moderate flow, some planting, and open swimming space. A group of at least six individuals is advisable to reduce inter-fish stress and encourage natural shoaling behaviour.
Water parameters appropriate for a Palawan stream fish are tropical (72–81 °F) with a soft-to-moderately hard chemistry and a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.5). Because detailed field chemistry data for the species are not on record, hobbyists should err toward the soft, slightly acidic end of the range common to many Southeast Asian cyprinids. The fish should not be housed with significantly larger or predatory tankmates given its modest size of around 2.5 in.
Conservation
Rasbora everetti is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 28 August 2020. As a freshwater endemic of Palawan Island, its entire global range is confined to a single island, which inherently limits the total population size and makes it more vulnerable to localised threats than widespread mainland species.
Palawan is considered one of the most biodiverse and environmentally intact major Philippine islands, with large areas of protected forest, but it faces growing pressure from agricultural expansion, logging, infrastructure development, and mining that threaten freshwater habitats. The island's rivers are short and drain rapidly, making stream fish populations sensitive to catchment-level disturbance. Continued monitoring of R. everetti's population status and habitat condition in its native streams would be prudent, even given its current LC standing.
