Stiphodon palawanensis is a true goby — family Oxudercidae, with the pelvic fins fused into the characteristic cup-shaped sucker disc — described from the freshwater streams of Palawan, Philippines, in 2013 by Maeda and Tan. It belongs to the subfamily Sicydiinae, the cling-gobies: a group of small, vividly coloured stream gobies that spend their adult lives rasping biofilm and algae off the rocks of fast, clear, well-oxygenated tropical rivers. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine family, and Stiphodon is a striking exception — but not a fully freshwater one. Like all Sicydiinae, S. palawanensis is amphidromous: adults breed in fresh water, but the hatchlings are carried downstream to the sea, where they develop as marine plankton before the post-larvae climb back upriver to mature. This biological constraint means the species is wild-collected and has never been raised through its full cycle in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Stiphodon palawanensis was formally described by Kazunori Maeda and Heok Hee Tan in 2013 in the journal Zootaxa (type locality: Palawan, Philippines). The original description placed it in the family Gobiidae, subfamily Sicydiinae; modern molecular and morphological revisions have reclassified the Sicydiinae — along with much of the broader goby assemblage — into the family Oxudercidae, the arrangement now followed by the Catalog of Fishes at the California Academy of Sciences, which is the authority for valid names used here.

The genus Stiphodon is one of the canonical algae-grazing cling-gobies of the Indo-Pacific, closely related to Sicyopterus and Sicyopus. All share the distinctive Sicydiine body plan: a sturdy sucker disc formed by the fused pelvic fins for anchoring to current-swept rock, a robust oral disc adapted for rasping aufwuchs, and an amphidromous life history. Stiphodon palawanensis is the sole member of its genus endemic to Palawan. No old combination under Gobius or Sicydium is recorded for this species; it was named directly into Stiphodon at its description.

Morphology

Stiphodon palawanensis is a small goby, reaching a maximum standard length of 2.5 in. Like other Stiphodon species it has a somewhat depressed, streamlined body well adapted to life in fast current: the head is broad and flattened, the mouth forms a scraping disc oriented downward for grazing the substrate, and the fused pelvic fins create the sucker disc that anchors the fish against strong flow. This sucker disc — the defining feature of the true gobies within the Gobioidei — is absent in the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) and is the easiest way to confirm that Stiphodon is a true goby and not a related lookalike.

As with most Stiphodon species, sexual dimorphism is pronounced once adults are mature. Males are typically the more colourful sex, with iridescent or bright-banded patterns that vary by species. Females are plainer and may be more cryptically coloured. The original description by Maeda and Tan (2013) provides the definitive meristic and chromatic diagnosis distinguishing S. palawanensis from its congeners endemic to the Philippines and nearby archipelagos.

Habitat

In Palawan, Stiphodon palawanensis inhabits streams and rivers draining toward the Sulu Sea in eastern central Palawan. It favours shallow reaches with boulders, exposed bedrock, gravel and pebble substrates — the classic hillstream and rapids biotope of fast, highly oxygenated, clear tropical freshwater. FishBase records it as a demersal species found to depths of about 10 ft, in the flowing pools and runs between rapids rather than the torrents themselves.

The water in these Palawan streams is typically clear, fast-moving and well-aerated, with little dissolved organic matter and good light penetration — conditions that promote the dense growth of periphyton, diatoms and fine algae that form the primary food source for the species. It is a rheophilic fish; still, turbid or nutrient-rich water does not suit it. There is no evidence that it enters brackish or estuarine water as an adult, though the larvae of all amphidromous Sicydiinae pass through marine and estuarine phases as post-larvae.

Feeding

Stiphodon palawanensis is an aufwuchs grazer. It feeds by rasping the thin film of diatoms, cyanobacteria, fine algae and associated microinvertebrates — collectively called periphyton or biofilm — from the surface of rocks and boulders using its scraping mouth disc. This is the characteristic feeding mode of all Stiphodon and is the reason the group is sometimes called the algae gobies. In the wild, abundant biofilm grows across the illuminated, current-swept rock faces of its stream habitat, providing a continuous food source that the fish harvests throughout the day.

In captivity this feeding strategy creates the species' single greatest husbandry challenge: a newly set-up or biologically immature aquarium has little or no periphyton, and a Stiphodon placed in such a tank will gradually starve even if offered alternatives. The fish must have access to a mature, well-lit surface colonised by biofilm — this is not optional. Supplements that can help include blanched spinach or zucchini pressed against glass, high-quality spirulina wafer or tablet foods, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as daphnia or brine shrimp as protein supplementation. It is not a flake-fed fish and not suitable for a beginner's bare or newly-cycled aquarium.

Mating

The mating strategy of Stiphodon palawanensis follows the Sicydiine pattern of resident-phase freshwater breeding with amphidromous dispersal of the offspring — a life history fundamentally different from both the cave-spawning resident gobies and the egg-scattering cyprinids that might share its stream habitat. Adult males are territorial and hold feeding and spawning patches over rock surfaces in clear, fast-flowing water. Courtship involves the male displaying his colours and body posture to attract a ripe female.

Spawning in captivity has been documented for some Stiphodon species: the male leads the female to an overhang, crevice or cave surface and the eggs are deposited adhesively, the male then guarding them. For S. palawanensis specifically, no published captive-spawning account is available, but the pattern is consistent with the genus. Because all Sicydiinae are amphidromous, the fertilisation itself occurs in fresh water — but what follows renders captive propagation effectively impossible.

Breeding

Breeding is the defining limitation for Stiphodon palawanensis in the aquarium hobby. The male guards the adhesively deposited eggs until hatching, which constitutes genuine paternal care. However, when the eggs hatch, the tiny prolarvae are not retained in a sheltered clutch like those of a cave-spawning resident goby: they drift passively with the current, are carried downstream, and enter the estuary and sea. There they develop through a planktonic marine larval phase before metamorphosing into post-larvae — tiny, fully-formed gobies — that detect and ascend freshwater streams, in some cases climbing vertical rock faces and waterfalls using their pelvic sucker disc and oral disc in an alternating caterpillar-like motion.

This oceanic larval phase cannot be replicated in a home aquarium. While spawning may occasionally occur in a mature biotope-style tank, no published account exists of successfully raising the larvae of S. palawanensis through to settlement in captivity. The species must therefore be considered wild-collected, and buyers should be aware that all specimens in the trade originate from wild fisheries in Palawan. This is not a breeding project fish; it is a display and conservation fish whose care requires respect for both its biological complexity and its endemic status.

In the aquarium

Stiphodon palawanensis is a specialist fish for experienced keepers who can provide the conditions its rheophilic, algae-grazing lifestyle demands. The aquarium should replicate the Palawan hillstream biotope: a well-lit tank with a high-flow filter or powerhead directed across a bed of smooth boulders, cobblestones and pebbles over fine sand, with minimal organic matter and high dissolved oxygen. The tank must be mature enough to have a dense, visible biofilm colonising the rock surfaces — this is the non-negotiable foundation of successful husbandry. Bright lighting supports biofilm and algae growth; live rock surfaces or ceramic pieces colonised in a mature system can be transferred in to supplement a new setup.

Because males are territorial over grazing patches, a tank with clear line-of-sight breaks between boulder clusters reduces aggression in groups. The aquarium must be kept covered: Stiphodon are capable jumpers and will exit through any gap. Water quality should be kept pristine — high nitrates will suppress the biofilm and stress the fish simultaneously. The species is not suited to a community tank with boisterous or competitively fed species; quiet, similarly rheophilic companions (hillstream loaches, small danios in the upper water column) work better. Given that all specimens are wild-caught, a period of careful acclimatisation and quarantine before introduction is important.

Conservation

Stiphodon palawanensis was assessed for the IUCN Red List in 2021 by Palla, Torres, Kesner-Reyes and Leander and listed as Least Concern (LC). The assessment notes that the species is endemic to Palawan, Philippines, occurring in rivers and streams draining to the Sulu Sea in eastern central Palawan, and that while information on its distribution, population size and reproductive biology remains limited, no evidence of significant decline was identified at the time of assessment.

Palawan is considered one of the Philippines' most biodiverse and least degraded islands, with large areas under protected-area status. However, the species' narrow endemism — restricted to a subset of streams on a single island — makes it inherently vulnerable to any future deterioration in water quality, sedimentation, deforestation of riparian corridors or extraction for the aquarium trade. Because S. palawanensis cannot be captive-bred, all aquarium specimens are wild-collected, and any commercial harvest adds directly to natural mortality. Responsible sourcing and modest collection limits are important safeguards for what remains a poorly studied endemic.
