Taxonomy & naming
Cyclocheilichthys schoppeae was described by Cervancia and Kottelat (2007) from specimens collected in the Iraan River and other northern Palawan drainages. The holotype is deposited at the Philippine National Museum (PNM) with a standard length of 4 in; paratypes range from 1.5–3.5 in SL. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the authority as Cervancia & Kottelat, 2007 and the placement as valid within Cyclocheilichthys.
The genus Cyclocheilichthys is a Southeast Asian clade of mid-sized to large riverine barbs characterised by a distinctly rounded snout, the arrangement of barbels, lateral-line and scale counts, and body proportions that separate them from superficially similar members of the old, now dismembered Puntius. The genus is distributed across mainland Indochina and the Sunda Islands, and the description of C. schoppeae from Palawan represents an outlying, island-endemic lineage. No previously known valid combination under Puntius or another junior synonym is recorded for this species in the formal literature; it was new to science at description.
Morphology
The maximum recorded standard length is 4 in (the holotype), with paratypes extending down to 1.5 in SL, indicating that adults routinely reach 3–4 in SL. The species shares the moderately deep, laterally compressed body typical of Cyclocheilichthys, with a distinctly rounded snout profile and the barbel formula characteristic of the genus.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data from the original description distinguish C. schoppeae from congeners by a combination of lateral-line scale counts, body depth, and head proportions. No common name is in established use; the species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade given its restricted distribution and Endangered status.
Habitat
Within its three known drainages — the Barbacan (Municipality of Roxas), Abongan (Municipality of Taytay) and Babuyan (Puerto Princesa City) — Cyclocheilichthys schoppeae inhabits the full range of lotic environments from medium streams to large rivers. Water conditions are described as clear, with current ranging from slowly moving to relatively fast-flowing, and substrates of gravel and mud. This combination of clear water and variable current velocity is consistent with the clean, forested hill-stream and lowland river habitats typical of less-disturbed Palawan catchments.
Palawan sits on an independent geological block and harbours a freshwater fauna with closer affinities to Borneo and mainland Asia than to the rest of the Philippines, making it a priority area for freshwater biodiversity. The rivers supporting C. schoppeae drain into the Sulu Sea and the South China Sea and are subject to wet and dry season fluctuations typical of the western Philippine monsoon climate. Water temperatures in Palawan lowland rivers are warm year-round, broadly in the tropical range consistent with other Philippine Cyclocheilichthys.
Feeding
FishBase records the diet of Cyclocheilichthys schoppeae as shrimps, worms, insect larvae and detritus — an invertebrate-dominated omnivory that is broadly typical of medium-bodied riverine barbs. This range of prey reflects a benthopelagic forager that picks food items from the substrate and the water column, exploiting both macro-invertebrate prey and organic particulate matter.
In rivers with gravel and muddy substrates across varying current speeds, such a diet would be supplemented opportunistically by whatever organic material the current concentrates at suitable micro-habitats. The inclusion of detritus suggests some role as a nutrient recycler in the benthic food web, a function common among cyprinids of similar body size.
Mating
No published spawning observations for Cyclocheilichthys schoppeae in the wild or in captivity are available in the literature reviewed. On the basis of the reproductive biology of Cyclocheilichthys and related Asian riverine barbs, the species is assumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. In such species, reproductively active males drive and court gravid females, pursuing them through the water column or over the substrate until eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
No territorial defence, pair bond or nest is formed; spawning activity is transient and related to seasonal hydrological cues such as rising water, increased flow or temperature change associated with the monsoon. In wild Palawan populations, spawning is likely timed to wet-season conditions when current volume and food availability peak.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Cyclocheilichthys schoppeae are documented in the sources reviewed, reflecting its rarity in the trade and its status as a recently described species from a limited geographic range. By analogy with other Cyclocheilichthys, breeding is expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern universal in the group: scattered adhesive eggs deposited over gravel or among plant material, with no parental care and no egg guarding by either sex.
The species' Endangered status and narrow Palawan endemism mean that captive breeding as a conservation measure — rather than commercial aquarium production — would be the most meaningful context for any husbandry work. Standard cyprinid breeding protocols (soft, clean water; well-conditioned brood fish; spawning substrate; prompt removal of adults) would be the logical starting point.
In the aquarium
Cyclocheilichthys schoppeae is not an established aquarium fish. Its rarity, Endangered status, and restriction to a handful of Palawan river systems mean it is almost never available in the trade. Any specimens that do appear should be regarded with caution regarding provenance, as collection from wild Endangered populations would be contrary to its conservation status.
For the hobbyist, the species' habitat data — clear, moderately flowing to fast-flowing water over gravel and mud in a warm tropical climate — suggests that standard conditions for medium-bodied riverine Southeast Asian barbs would be applicable: well-oxygenated, clean, moderately warm water with good flow, a spacious tank, and a diet of invertebrate foods supplemented with prepared foods. In the absence of captive-bred stock, conservation of its wild habitat is the most relevant contribution the hobbyist community can make.
Conservation
Cyclocheilichthys schoppeae is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in the 2021-2 period. Its Endangered designation reflects the extremely limited range — confined to three river drainages in a small area of northern Palawan — combined with ongoing pressure on Palawan's freshwater habitats from deforestation, agricultural expansion, mining, and sedimentation of clear-water rivers.
Palawan has formal protection status over much of its area as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and through the Palawan Integrated Area Development Project framework, but ground-level enforcement against small-scale deforestation and watershed disturbance remains incomplete. The freshwater fish fauna of Palawan is still incompletely inventoried, and several endemic species share C. schoppeae's vulnerability to the loss of clean, forested river catchments. Monitoring of the Barbacan, Abongan and Babuyan drainages, and conservation of their forested headwaters, are the most direct actions available to protect this species.
