Mastacembelus catchpolei is a small, obscure spiny eel of the upper Congo basin, described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1936 from the Aruwimi drainage in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite its serpentine form, it is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels, within the order Synbranchiformes — kin to the swamp eels rather than to the catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Its eel-like body is convergent, an adaptation to the burrowing, benthic life shared by all mastacembelids. Rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and known only from a narrow stretch of the middle Congo basin, M. catchpolei remains a poorly studied fish whose wild biology and aquarium potential are almost entirely undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus catchpolei was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1936. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences — the authority for valid names) records the species as Mastacembelus catchpolei, valid under that combination. Historically it was placed in the African segregate genera Caecomastacembelus and Aethiomastacembelus, both of which were synonymised back into Mastacembelus following the Mastacembelidae revision of 2005. These generic shuffles reflect the long debate over how to partition the very large Mastacembelus as circumscribed, and the African species — including M. catchpolei — were frequently moved between these containers until the single-genus solution prevailed.

The fish is not a true eel. The true eels form the order Anguilliformes; the spiny eels of the family Mastacembelidae belong to Synbranchiformes, a separate lineage whose elongate form is convergent rather than ancestral. Mastacembelus catchpolei has been noted as possibly synonymous with M. congicus, though it is retained as a valid species pending further revision. The specific epithet honours the collector or dedicatee named Catchpole, though detailed dedication notes from Fowler's original description are sparse in the secondary literature.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 11.5 in for Mastacembelus catchpolei, placing it in the smaller half of the genus. Like all spiny eels the body is strongly elongate and laterally compressed toward the rear, with a fleshy, trunk-like snout bearing paired tubular nostrils that the fish uses to probe soft substrate. The dorsal surface carries a row of isolated short spines ahead of the soft dorsal fin — the diagnostic character of the family — and the soft dorsal runs continuously around the tail with the anal fin, giving the hindquarters a distinctive finned fringe.

The skin is scaleless in appearance, though tiny embedded scales are present under the thick mucous coat. Very little published morphological description of M. catchpolei specifically is available beyond Fowler's original account; its colour pattern in life is not well documented in the accessible literature, and comparative notes from the synoptic literature treat it briefly. As with many Mastacembelus, females likely become fuller-bodied when ripe, but no external dimorphism has been formally described for this species.

Habitat

Mastacembelus catchpolei is known from the upper Aruwimi drainage, a tributary system of the middle Congo River in the Kibali-Ituri district of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its type locality is the Tinda tributary of the Shari-Ituri — a restricted range that makes it a Congo basin endemic with a very narrow known distribution. The Congo basin is characterised by warm, soft, acidic blackwater and clearwater rivers flowing over sandy and leafy substrates, and the spiny eels of the region are demersal fish associated with those conditions.

Based on FishBase's habitat assignment (freshwater, demersal, tropical) and the general ecology of Mastacembelus in the Congo basin, M. catchpolei almost certainly inhabits slow to moderate streams and river margins with soft sandy or muddy beds, submerged roots, and leaf litter into which it can burrow. No field survey or habitat characterisation specific to this species has been published in the accessible secondary literature.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.7 ± 0.6 for Mastacembelus catchpolei, consistent with a carnivorous diet focused on benthic invertebrates. This places it in the same functional guild as other small to mid-sized Mastacembelus: nocturnal opportunists that probe soft substrate with the sensitive fleshy snout to locate invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and similar prey.

No specific gut-content studies or feeding observations have been published for this species. By analogy with congeners of comparable size and habitat, it likely targets midge larvae, aquatic worms and small crustaceans in the substrate. In the aquarium, small bloodworm, tubifex and similar live or frozen invertebrate foods would be appropriate, offered in the evening after lights-out when mastacembelids are most active.

Mating

Mastacembelus catchpolei is a spiny eel, and the reproductive biology of the Mastacembelidae is well established at the family level. Spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners; they do not form lasting pair bonds, undertake no parental care, and do not build nests. Adults are not catadromous — they do not migrate to the sea to spawn, as the true eels (Anguillidae) do — and their entire reproductive cycle occurs in fresh water.

Spawning in the Mastacembelidae is generally thought to be seasonal, triggered by the onset of the rains and the rise and warming of water levels that occur across the Congo basin each wet season. Courting pairs entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among fine vegetation, roots and leaf litter. No specific mating observation for M. catchpolei has been published.

Breeding

No captive breeding record for Mastacembelus catchpolei has been documented in the accessible literature. The species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and is effectively unknown in the hobby, so the body of practical breeding experience that exists for popular spiny eels such as M. erythrotaenia or the peacock eel does not extend to this species.

By inference from the family, eggs are small, adhesive and scattered among plants or substrate material; they receive no parental attention. Larvae are minute and require very fine first foods. The triggers expected to induce spawning — a simulated dry-to-wet season transition achieved via large, slightly cooler and softer water changes — are consistent with broad Mastacembelidae practice. Any hobbyist working with this species would be in effectively uncharted territory for captive breeding.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus catchpolei is not available in the mainstream aquarium trade and has no documented keeping record in the hobby literature. Its modest adult size of under 12 in TL means it does not require the very large aquaria that the bigger spiny eels demand, but the fundamental care requirements of all Mastacembelidae apply: a deep bed of fine, soft sand for burrowing, numerous caves and shaded retreats, a tight-fitting lid with no gaps (spiny eels are accomplished escape artists and will squeeze through the smallest opening), and an absence of copper-based treatments, to which the scaleless skin makes them acutely sensitive.

The tank should be mature and well filtered; water parameters appropriate to a Congo basin stream — warm (around 75–81 °F), soft to neutral in hardness, and slightly acidic to neutral in pH (6.5–7.5) — would be the reasonable starting point. Live or frozen invertebrate foods offered after dark are the appropriate diet. Given its extreme rarity, any acquisition would be the result of a specialist import, and its care, breeding and behaviour in captivity would represent genuinely novel observations.

Conservation

Mastacembelus catchpolei has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its known distribution is narrow — the upper Aruwimi drainage, a relatively restricted tributary system of the middle Congo — and it has been noted as possibly synonymous with M. congicus, which would further complicate any future assessment. The type locality is in the Kibali-Ituri district of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a region that has experienced significant political instability and where freshwater biodiversity surveys have been intermittent.

The Congo basin overall is considered one of the world's most biodiverse freshwater systems and is under increasing pressure from artisanal and industrial mining, deforestation and associated sedimentation. A species with such a restricted known range and so little data on its population or ecology is inherently vulnerable to local habitat degradation, even in the absence of a formal threat assessment. Its obscurity in the trade offers no commercial collection pressure, but it equally means that its conservation status has attracted no attention.
