Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus goro was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1902, from material collected in the Congo River region. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, the authority for valid names) records this name and notes that some ichthyologists treat it as a junior synonym of Mastacembelus niger Sauvage, 1879 — an earlier description from the same general drainage system. Both names refer to the same fish or closely related populations spanning the Mbonge River basin in Cameroon south through the Congo Basin to the Shiloango River drainage in the Democratic Republic of Congo, from the Kinsuka rapids down to the Wagenia Falls. The type locality of M. goro is associated with the Doumé Falls region.
Regardless of the synonymy question, the genus placement is clear: Mastacembelus, the type genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae. The order Synbranchiformes — which groups the spiny eels with the swamp eels — has no relationship to the true eels of order Anguilliformes. African spiny eels were historically distributed across several genera (Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, Afromastacembelus) but these have been largely returned to Mastacembelus, and this species has always been assigned there. Molecular phylogenetic work on the Lower Congo spiny eels has illuminated diversity and convergent evolution within this remarkable drainage system, known globally for its extreme levels of fish endemism and diversification.
Morphology
Mastacembelus goro is a moderately large spiny eel, reaching a recorded maximum of around 15 in standard length (about 15 in total length) in the wild. The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed toward the rear, giving the animal its eel-like profile. Like all mastacembelids it is essentially scaleless to casual inspection — the tiny embedded scales are almost invisible and the skin carries a heavy coating of mucus that must be handled with care. The snout is drawn forward into a fleshy, trunk-like proboscis with tubular nostrils, adapted for probing soft substrate in search of prey.
A row of short, isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the longer soft dorsal fin, which merges continuously with the anal fin around the pointed tail — the "spiny" structure that gives the family its common name. Exact colouration is not well documented for this species in the literature, but Congo Basin Mastacembelus are typically brownish to olive on the back and flanks, sometimes with darker mottling or banding that provides camouflage against a riverbed of sand and leaf litter. Distinguishing features from other sympatric Congo spiny eels require close examination of meristic counts.
Habitat
This species inhabits the fresh waters of the Congo River basin and adjacent West African coastal drainages in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo, including the Mbonge and Shiloango river basins and the Congo mainstream between the Kinsuka rapids and the Wagenia Falls. The Congo Basin is one of the most hydrologically complex and ecologically diverse river systems in the world, characterised by deep, fast-flowing sections (particularly in the Lower Congo), extensive flood-season inundation of forest margins, and a wide range of microhabitats from rapids to quiet backwaters and submerged leaf litter banks.
Like the other African mastacembelids, M. goro is a demersal, shallow-water freshwater species that spends the day buried in soft substrate — sand, silt, or leaf litter — and emerges at night to forage. It inhabits tropical lowland fresh water and is not associated with the hard, alkaline rift-lake chemistry of the Lake Tanganyika Mastacembelus species. Water in the Congo Basin is typically soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral, and warm year-round.
Feeding
Mastacembelus goro is a nocturnal predator with a trophic level of approximately 3.9, placing it in the mid-to-upper range of predators — above a simple invertebrate feeder but below an apex piscivore. The fleshy, probing snout is well adapted for rooting through soft sediment, leaf litter and debris in search of benthic invertebrates: insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and small fishes are the likely prey items based on what is known of the feeding ecology of congeners.
In an aquarium setting, congeneric spiny eels readily take meaty offerings placed on or near the substrate in the evening: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), earthworms, and other invertebrate foods are appropriate, with sinking pellets accepted by settled individuals. Feeding should be timed to coincide with the fish's natural nocturnal activity window, as newly imported specimens may refuse food during daylight or in bright conditions.
Mating
Mastacembelus goro is a spiny eel, and like other mastacembelids it is an egg-scattering spawner — it does not undertake the long-distance marine spawning migration of the true eels (Anguilla), nor does it build bubble nests as swamp eels (Monopterus) do. In the broader genus, courtship in the rainy or monsoon season involves multiple males pursuing a single ripe female, entwining around one another as the pair moves through vegetation, fine plant matter or roots, before adhesive eggs are scattered among this substrate.
Broadly across Mastacembelus, spawning is thought to be triggered by rising water levels and warming temperatures at the onset of the flood season — conditions that in the Congo Basin correspond to the twice-yearly inundation periods. No parental bond forms and the adults do not guard the eggs. Wild mating observations are virtually absent from the scientific literature for this species specifically, given the nocturnal, burrowing habits of the fish in turbid river water.
Breeding
Mastacembelus goro has not been reported as bred in the home aquarium, and detailed breeding accounts for the species in captivity appear to be absent from the literature. This is typical of Congo Basin mastacembelids: most spiny eels are rarely if ever produced by hobbyist breeders, and the trade relies on wild-caught imports or, where fish are common food-fish, on subsistence or artisanal harvesting rather than ornamental aquaculture.
What is understood about spiny-eel reproduction in the genus comes largely from induced-spawning experiments with Asian congeners and from the natural history of eggs and larvae in closely related species. Eggs are adhesive and round, reported at approximately 0.5 in diameter in M. pancalus; they scatter among fine vegetation and leaf litter and receive no parental care after deposition. Hatching takes a few days in warm water, and the tiny larvae require very fine live foods before they are capable of taking newly hatched brine shrimp. Successfully raising a clutch through the vulnerable early larval stage outside a dedicated facility is extremely uncommon.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus goro is not a regularly traded species in the aquarium hobby, and most encounters with it outside its native range are in specialist collections or among enthusiasts of African spiny eels. Care requirements follow the general pattern for tropical African Mastacembelus: a spacious aquarium with a deep bed of fine sand into which the fish can burrow, a range of caves, pipes and shaded retreats to replicate its natural daytime refugia, and stable, well-filtered soft to neutral water maintained at tropical temperatures (roughly 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5 based on the soft-water lowland Congo habitat).
Like all spiny eels it is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications, malachite green, and poor water quality — all three can cause rapid deterioration. Most critically, spiny eels are legendary escape artists: they climb, squeeze through tiny gaps, breathe at the surface, and will exit any tank with an improperly secured lid and die on the floor. A fully sealed, tight-fitting cover is not optional. Tankmates should be robust and too large to be swallowed at night, since this fish is a nocturnal ambush predator of invertebrates and small fishes. It is best fed after lights-out.
Conservation
Mastacembelus niger — the name under which this taxon is assessed for conservation purposes — is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed in February 2009. The species has a moderately wide distribution across the Congo Basin and adjacent Cameroonian coastal drainages, and there is no evidence of a range-wide population decline at that assessment date.
Nonetheless, the Congo Basin faces intensifying pressures: artisanal and small-scale commercial fisheries target a wide range of native species; deforestation and agricultural runoff degrade water quality and alter the flow regimes on which shallow-water benthic fish like this one depend; and the remarkable endemic biodiversity of the Lower Congo River — where this species is found — is incompletely inventoried and therefore potentially vulnerable to poorly characterised threats. A medium population resilience (minimum doubling time 1.4–4.4 years) means local populations could be slow to recover from sustained pressure. As a moderately sized predator rather than a large flagship species, M. goro attracts little dedicated conservation scrutiny, but its persistence is tied to the health of the river systems it inhabits.
