Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus frenatus was formally described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1901, one of many African fish species he characterised during his prolific career at the Natural History Museum in London. The species epithet frenatus derives from the Latin for 'bridled' or 'reined', likely a reference to the banded or barred patterning on the head and body.
The species is placed in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae. The African members of this family have a convoluted taxonomic history: many were split into separate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, Afromastacembelus — before subsequent revisions consolidated them back under Mastacembelus. M. frenatus was also known historically under the combination Caecomastacembelus frenatus in some older works, but the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Mastacembelus as the valid genus. The family Mastacembelidae sits within the order Synbranchiformes, the same order as the swamp eels (Synbranchidae), and has no close relationship to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes. The elongate, eel-like body of Mastacembelus is a product of convergent evolution on a burrowing lifestyle, not of shared ancestry with Anguilla.
Morphology
Like all spiny eels, M. frenatus has a greatly elongated, laterally compressed body, a fleshy, trunk-like snout tipped with paired tubular nostrils, and a row of short isolated dorsal spines running ahead of the soft dorsal fin. The body is practically scaleless to the naked eye — tiny embedded scales are present but covered in mucus — giving the skin a smooth, almost rubbery texture that is characteristic of the mastacembelids.
The species is a moderately sized African spiny eel, reaching roughly 10–15 in in total length according to available data, though precise maximum-size records are sparse. The ground colour is brownish to olivaceous, marked with a series of dark vertical bars or saddles that extend down the flanks, which together with the banded head pattern presumably gave rise to the epithet frenatus. The caudal region tapers to a point, the dorsal and anal fins meeting around the tail tip. Females in breeding condition become noticeably rounder in the abdomen, but external sexual dimorphism is otherwise minimal.
Habitat
Mastacembelus frenatus is a freshwater species native to rivers and streams of West and Central Africa. It is recorded from river systems in this region, including drainages associated with the Congo Basin and adjacent coastal river systems, inhabiting the sandy and muddy bottoms of lowland rivers, forest streams, and floodplain environments.
Like most Mastacembelidae it is a burrowing, substrate-associated fish that favours soft beds of sand or fine gravel, often with accumulations of leaf litter, submerged roots and woody debris. Water conditions in its native range are typically warm and soft to slightly acidic, characteristic of lowland equatorial African drainages — broadly tropical temperatures in the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius with moderate pH. It is not associated with the hard, alkaline rift-lake waters of the East African Mastacembelus species flock, being instead a fish of lower-gradient, humus-stained forest and savanna rivers.
Feeding
Mastacembelus frenatus is a nocturnal, benthic carnivore. Like other mastacembelids it uses its sensitive, probing snout to locate prey in and among the substrate after dark, feeding primarily on aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. The downward-pointing mouth is adapted for picking prey from the substrate surface rather than pursuing free-swimming prey in open water.
In the aquarium this species accepts a range of meaty foods offered in the evening: bloodworm, tubifex, chopped earthworm and other live or frozen invertebrate foods are typically taken readily. Like many nocturnal burrowers it may be reluctant to feed in full light or in the presence of active, competing tankmates, so feeding after the tank lights are off helps newly imported fish settle and begin eating consistently. Sinking carnivore pellets may be accepted by established individuals once they are confident in their environment.
Mating
Mastacembelus frenatus is a spiny eel and follows the reproductive pattern of the family Mastacembelidae: it is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, breeding in fresh water with no marine migration. It is emphatically not a true eel and does not undertake the catadromous, semelparous ocean migration of Anguilla species.
Seasonal spawning cues are likely tied to the wet season, when rising water levels, increased rainfall and the influx of cooler, oxygen-rich water trigger reproductive behaviour in many African lowland fish species. Courtship in mastacembelids generally involves the pair entwining and moving together among vegetation before eggs are scattered. Wild spawning observations for this particular species are sparse in the published literature, as it is a small, nocturnal, substrate-dwelling fish that is difficult to observe in turbid river conditions.
Breeding
Captive breeding of M. frenatus is rarely accomplished, and most individuals in the aquarium trade are wild-caught. As a spiny eel (family Mastacembelidae) it is a substrate egg-scatterer: a conditioned pair scatters small adhesive eggs among fine plants, roots or leaf litter in fresh water, after which the adults take no further interest in the spawn. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding; parental care is absent entirely.
For hobbyists attempting captive spawning, the approach mirrors that used for other African mastacembelids: a spacious, well-planted tank with a deep sand substrate, excellent water quality, and a conditioning period on varied live and frozen foods followed by a partial water change with slightly cooler, soft water to mimic the onset of the rains. Eggs are tiny and hatch quickly in warm water; larvae are demanding in their first food requirements and very small. Successful home aquarium breeding remains uncommon for this species.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus frenatus is an undemanding but characterful aquarium fish by the standards of the spiny eels — its moderate size makes it more practical than the large Asian species for mid-sized set-ups. A tank of 39.5–47 in or more, furnished with a deep soft sand substrate, caves, driftwood and sheltered retreats, suits it well. It is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and to the elevated nitrates and dissolved organic loads that accumulate in poorly maintained tanks; a mature, stable, well-filtered system is essential.
Escape is a serious and often fatal risk. Like all mastacembelids it is a strong climber and will work its way through the smallest gap in a hood, around cables or pipework entries, and out of the tank onto the floor. A tight-fitting, fully sealed lid is non-negotiable. It is nocturnal and reclusive by day but becomes active and visible in the evening; over time individuals often become bold enough to emerge during daylight hours in quiet surroundings. It can be kept with peaceful fish too large to be eaten, but small fishes and invertebrates are at risk from this benthic predator after dark. Water should be warm and soft to neutral to match its native West–Central African lowland river environment.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment has been located for Mastacembelus frenatus; its conservation status is currently unknown or not evaluated. Many modestly distributed African river fish remain data-deficient in global assessments, and the Mastacembelidae of West and Central Africa are underrepresented in the conservation literature compared with the more heavily studied East African rift-lake species.
The lowland river systems this species inhabits across West and Central Africa face ongoing pressures from habitat degradation, deforestation, and the modification of river flows, though widespread, generalist species of lowland rivers tend to be more resilient to diffuse impact than narrow-range endemics. A formal IUCN assessment with range mapping and population data would help clarify its status. In the aquarium trade it is not a high-volume species and ornamental collection is unlikely to pose a significant pressure on wild populations.
