Mastacembelus congicus, the Congo spiny eel, is a sinuous, scaleless predator native to the Congo River basin of Central Africa. Despite its name and serpentine build, it is not a true eel at all: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels of the order Synbranchiformes — kin to the swamp eels rather than to the marine and catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Its elongate form is a product of convergence on a burrowing, benthic way of life in the great lowland rivers, floodplains and tributaries of the Congo basin. Reaching up to 17 in in standard length, it is a moderately sized spiny eel with a wide distribution across several Central and West-Central African nations, and the IUCN regards it as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus congicus was described by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1896, one of the most prolific describers of African freshwater fishes during the colonial era. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) records it under the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes. This placement is the critical taxonomic point: Mastacembelidae are not Anguilliformes, the order of true eels, and their eel-like shape is wholly convergent.

The species was formerly placed in the subgenus or genus Aethiomastacembelus, a grouping used for many African spiny eels that was also treated under Caecomastacembelus. A thorough 2005 revision of the family (Travers 2005) placed Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus into synonymy with Mastacembelus, returning the Congo spiny eel and its African relatives to the type genus. The specific epithet congicus refers to the Congo River basin, the core of this species' range.

The genus Mastacembelus is large and spans both tropical Africa and Asia. The African members include the spectacular species flocks of Lake Tanganyika as well as widespread river-basin species like M. congicus. Within Africa, M. congicus belongs to the lowland-river contingent rather than the rift-lake assemblage, and its soft, warm-water habitat differs markedly from the hard, alkaline conditions of the Tanganyika endemics.

Morphology

Mastacembelus congicus is a moderately sized spiny eel reaching 17 in in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, making it smaller than flagship species such as the fire eel (M. erythrotaenia) but a substantial animal nonetheless. The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, with the scaleless surface covered in tiny embedded scales and a coating of protective mucus that gives the fish its characteristic slippery feel. The snout is drawn out into the fleshy, trunk-like proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils characteristic of Mastacembelus — a sensory probe used to search the substrate for prey.

Running along the back ahead of the soft dorsal fin are the isolated, sharp dorsal spines that give the spiny eels their name and distinguish the group at a glance. The soft dorsal is confluent with the anal fin around the tapering tail, giving the posterior end a continuous fringe. Detailed colouration notes for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, but Central African spiny eels of this group typically show a drab brown to olive-grey ground colour with variable patterning on the flanks. Sexual dimorphism is minimal externally; ripe females are likely fuller-bodied, as in related species.

Habitat

Mastacembelus congicus is a freshwater, benthopelagic species native to the Congo River basin. Its range extends across the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Angola, the Central African Republic and Zambia — in other words, the full breadth of the Congo drainage and its margins. FishBase records include the Lefini River in the middle Congo basin (Republic of Congo), floodplain systems and the numerous large and small tributaries that drain into the main Congo channel.

Like other lowland-river spiny eels, M. congicus inhabits the warm, soft-to-neutral freshwaters typical of the Central African interior. The Congo basin's lowland rivers are characteristically warm (broadly 75–82 °F), with a pH in the neutral to slightly acidic range (around 6–7) and soft to moderate hardness — conditions shaped by the ancient granitic and sandstone catchments of the basin. The species is benthopelagic, living close to or on the substrate: soft beds of sand, mud and leaf litter in slower reaches, floodplain margins and sheltered tributaries. Like all Mastacembelidae it is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper and deteriorating water quality.

Feeding

Mastacembelus congicus is a carnivore adapted to benthic foraging, as the long, probing snout strongly suggests. In related lowland spiny eels the diet consists primarily of benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and small molluscs — detected by rooting through soft substrate in the manner typical of the genus. Small fishes taken opportunistically are plausible, as in other Mastacembelus of comparable size. The fleshy nasal proboscis functions as a chemosensory and mechanosensory organ that allows the fish to locate buried prey in turbid, dark-bottomed river environments.

Most spiny eel foraging is nocturnal or crepuscular, and M. congicus is likely similar: sheltering in substrate or in crevices by day and hunting the river bed after dark. In an aquarium, meaty foods offered in the evening — earthworms, bloodworm, frozen invertebrates and eventually sinking carnivore pellets — match this natural feeding ecology. Newly imported fish are typically shy and may take time to settle and feed confidently in daylight.

Mating

Like all Mastacembelidae, Mastacembelus congicus is an egg-scattering spawner; it is not a true eel and does not undertake the oceanic spawning migrations of catadromous Anguilla species. Spawning in lowland African spiny eels is thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperatures, increases in flow, or the onset of the rainy season and associated flooding — that bring adults onto floodplain margins or shallow, vegetated areas. A courting pair is believed to entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among fine aquatic plants, roots and leaf litter.

No parental bond forms beyond the spawning act itself, and the adults play no role in guarding or tending the eggs. Specific field observations for M. congicus are sparse; the account above is grounded in what is known of closely related lowland African Mastacembelus, applied with appropriate caution given the limited published record for this particular species.

Breeding

Mastacembelus congicus is rarely if ever deliberately bred in home aquaria, and there are no well-documented captive spawning accounts in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. The 2005 Mastacembelidae revision confirms that the family as a whole is composed of egg-scatterers with no parental care, and that captive breeding across the group is uncommon. For M. congicus specifically, the trade fish are almost certainly wild-caught or gathered from artisanal fisheries rather than bred in captivity.

Should captive breeding be attempted, the approach used for other lowland African spiny eels would apply: a spacious, mature tank with a deep soft substrate, dense fine-leafed planting or yarn mops as a spawning medium, and a deliberate trigger via large, slightly cooler water changes to simulate the onset of rains. Eggs are small, adhesive and hatch within a few days; larvae require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to nauplii. In practice, the difficulty of conditioning a compatible pair and the lack of a proven captive protocol mean that wild-caught fish dominate the supply.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus congicus occasionally appears in the specialist trade as one of the less-celebrated Central African spiny eels. At up to 17 in SL it is a fish that needs a tank of 39.5–47 in or more when adult, furnished with a deep bed of fine sand it can bury itself in, and plenty of caves, root tangles and hiding places to satisfy its strongly reclusive, burrowing nature. It is most active at night and should be fed in the evening to observe it at its best.

Like all Mastacembelidae it is scaleless and therefore acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to poor water quality; a mature, stable filter and prompt water changes are essential. It is an expert escape artist that can squeeze through remarkably small gaps and will climb damp surfaces, so a tight-fitting, fully sealed lid is non-negotiable. Compatible tankmates are peaceful, robust species too large to be swallowed; small fishes risk predation after dark. In a well-set-up system with meaty evening feeds and soft, warm, clean water, M. congicus settles into a long-lived and quietly rewarding resident.

Conservation

Mastacembelus congicus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species has a wide distribution across the Congo River basin — one of the largest river systems in the world — spanning the DRC, Cameroon, Angola, the Central African Republic and Zambia. No range-wide population decline has been documented, and its broad occurrence across a large, still largely intact basin provides a degree of resilience that many narrower-range African fishes lack.

That said, the Congo basin faces intensifying pressures: expanding artisanal and commercial fisheries, deforestation, agricultural runoff, and infrastructure development are altering river habitats across the region. For a scaleless benthic predator that relies on clean water and intact soft-substrate habitat, localised declines are plausible where these pressures are most acute, even if the species as a whole remains secure. The current Least Concern assessment reflects an absence of evidence for range-wide decline rather than confirmed stability at the local level.
