Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus platysoma was described by the Belgian ichthyologists Max Poll and Hubert Matthes in 1962 from Lake Tanganyika. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. This taxonomic placement defines what the fish is and what it is not: it is an eel only by trade name and body shape; the true eels are the Anguilliformes, a separate and distant order, and the resemblance between spiny eels and true eels is convergent — both groups independently evolved an elongate burrowing body.
The African members of Mastacembelus were long divided among satellite genera: Aethiomastacembelus was applied to many West and Central African species, while Caecomastacembelus covered cave-dwelling blind forms. A taxonomic revision in 2005 synonymised both back into Mastacembelus, so Aethiomastacembelus platysoma and Caecomastacembelus platysoma now appear in older literature as synonyms for what is correctly called Mastacembelus platysoma. The specific epithet platysoma is from the Greek platy (flat, broad) and soma (body), referring to the somewhat laterally compressed body profile.
Morphology
Mastacembelus platysoma is a small species by the standards of the genus, reaching a maximum recorded length of 6.5 in SL (standard length, measured from the snout tip to the base of the tail fin). The body is elongate and laterally compressed, covered in small embedded scales and a protective coat of mucus rather than obvious external armour. The snout is drawn into the characteristic fleshy, tubular proboscis of the mastacembelid spiny eels, equipped with tubular nostrils used to probe the substrate and detect food. A row of small isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which merges with the anal fin around the tapered tail.
As with many Tanganyikan mastacembelids, coloration tends toward subdued earth tones — ochres, tans and browns — allowing the fish to blend against the rocky and sandy substrates it inhabits. Detailed colour descriptions are sparse in the literature, as with many of the smaller members of the Lake Tanganyika spiny-eel fauna. Sexes are not visually distinct; ripe females may appear fuller-bodied when in breeding condition.
Habitat
Mastacembelus platysoma is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, occurring across coastal regions of the lake between approximately 3°S and 9°S. It is a benthopelagic species, living in and around the lakebed in the coastal zone, where it frequents rocky bottoms, sandy patches and transitional habitats between the two substrate types. Lake Tanganyika is a rift lake formed by the East African Rift System and is among the oldest, deepest and most chemically stable freshwater bodies on Earth — conditions quite unlike the soft, acidic lowland rivers where most spiny eels reside.
The water of Lake Tanganyika is hard, alkaline and exceptionally clear, with pH typically ranging from 8.0 to 9.5 (roughly 9.0 at surface to 328 ft depth), temperature spanning 75–84 °F (coolest in August, warmest in March and April), and high dissolved oxygen throughout the well-mixed upper layers. These rift-lake parameters are non-negotiable for Tanganyikan species: Mastacembelus platysoma is an alkaline-water fish, and the soft, neutral-to-acidic conditions often recommended for Asian spiny eels would be inappropriate and harmful for it.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 3.6 for Mastacembelus platysoma, placing it firmly in the predator tier. Like other mastacembelids it is a benthopelagic carnivore that hunts along and within the substrate, using its mobile, sensitive snout-tip to locate invertebrate prey — small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms and similar benthic animals that inhabit the rocky and sandy lakebed of Lake Tanganyika.
The down-turned probing mouth and elongate body are the tools of an animal built for substrate foraging rather than open-water pursuit. Feeding is primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, as with other members of the family, though the clear and well-lit Tanganyikan inshore zone may influence the activity pattern compared to the turbid rivers many Asian relatives inhabit.
Mating
No specific account of courtship in Mastacembelus platysoma exists in the published literature or hobbyist record known from the cache sources. Based on the biology of the family Mastacembelidae, spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners: a courting pair entwine among vegetation, roots or other substrate structure and scatter adhesive eggs without forming a nest or pair bond. There is no parental care of any kind — adults do not guard or attend the eggs after spawning.
Spiny eels are not catadromous and do not undertake marine spawning migrations; they breed entirely in fresh water. In Tanganyikan congeners and in spiny eels generally, spawning is thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — changes in water temperature or the onset of seasonal rains — rather than occurring continuously. For a lake-endemic species like M. platysoma, temperature fluctuations between the cooler August period (around 75 °F) and the warmer March–April period (82–84 °F) may serve as the seasonal trigger.
Breeding
Mastacembelus platysoma is not reported as having been bred in the home aquarium. As with most Lake Tanganyika spiny eels, it carries minor commercial value in the aquarium trade but is seldom available and rarely kept by specialists. The family-level pattern for Mastacembelidae is substrate egg-scattering in fresh water, with no parental care: eggs are adhesive and deposited among fine plants, roots or rocky crevices, hatching in a few days, with the larvae initially requiring microscopic food before growing large enough for brine shrimp nauplii.
Any attempt to breed this species in captivity would need to replicate Tanganyika's chemistry — hard, alkaline water at pH 8.0–9.0 and 75–81 °F — along with appropriate substrate structure and a conditioning period that mimics the lake's seasonal temperature cycle. FishBase notes high population resilience (doubling time less than 15 months), suggesting a relatively productive life-history strategy, but captive breeding remains undocumented.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus platysoma is an uncommon aquarium fish. It appears occasionally in the Tanganyika specialist trade, and its care demands reflect its origin in a rift lake rather than the general tropical-community spiny-eel template. Water chemistry is the first and most important requirement: the fish requires hard, alkaline water matching Lake Tanganyika parameters — pH 8.0–9.0, temperature 75–81 °F, and good hardness — and should not be kept in soft or acidic conditions.
Like all mastacembelids, it is scaleless and therefore acutely sensitive to copper-based medications, which must never be used in its tank. A tight-fitting, fully sealed lid is essential, as spiny eels are persistent escape artists capable of squeezing through very small gaps and will leave an open tank. The aquarium should provide a fine sandy substrate for burrowing, rocky structures and caves for shelter, and a nocturnal feeding schedule with meaty invertebrate foods. It is best housed in a Tanganyika community with appropriate cichlids and other rift-lake species rather than in a generic community tank where water conditions would not match its requirements.
Conservation
Mastacembelus platysoma is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated 2006. The species has a high population resilience — FishBase records a doubling time of fewer than 15 months — suggesting a life history capable of recovering from moderate pressure. Its habitat in the rocky and sandy coastal zones of Lake Tanganyika is broadly intact, and there is no evidence of population-level decline.
Nevertheless, the species is an endemic confined entirely to a single lake, and Lake Tanganyika faces increasing threats. Water temperature in the lake has risen measurably over the past century, stratification has increased, and nutrient upwelling that sustains the prey base has declined. Overfishing of the lake's commercial fisheries, agricultural runoff and sedimentation along the shoreline, and pollution from the growing lakeside cities all place ongoing pressure on the ecosystem. For a species with no range outside the lake, any sustained decline in Tanganyika's coastal habitat quality translates directly into population pressure. The current Least Concern status reflects present abundance rather than immunity to future threat.
