Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus polli was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Emmanuel Vreven in 2005 as part of a sweeping revision of African spiny-eel taxonomy. That revision placed the genera Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus — formerly used to separate African from Asian species within Mastacembelidae — into synonymy with Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family. As a result, all African spiny eels that were previously assigned to those satellite genera now carry the name Mastacembelus, and M. polli was described as a new species under the unified genus from the outset. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the governing authority for the valid name.
The species is placed within the order Synbranchiformes, which groups the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae) with the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). Both families independently evolved a long, cylindrical body suited to burrowing and slow substrate work — but neither is related to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Mastacembelus polli is an eel in popular name and outward form only; the similarity to marine or migratory eels is pure convergence. It belongs to the diverse Lake Tanganyika species flock, a radiation of Mastacembelidae that exploited the lake's ancient, oxygen-rich, rocky-shore habitat over millions of years.
The specific epithet honours the late Prof. Dr. Max Poll, the distinguished Belgian ichthyologist who contributed foundational work on the fishes of Lake Tanganyika and the Congo basin.
Morphology
Mastacembelus polli is one of the smallest members of its genus, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 5.5 in. Practical Fishkeeping notes that the species reaches sexual maturity at around 4 in, which places mature adults firmly in dwarf territory among the Tanganyikan spiny eels. The body is highly elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, as in all Mastacembelidae, and the skin is scaleless to the naked eye — actually clothed in tiny embedded scales beneath a protective mucus coat.
The head carries a small but distinct rostral appendage at the tip of the snout — the fleshy, tubular protrusion characteristic of the family and used to probe crevices and sediment for prey. The eyes are notably protruding, the lower jaw projects slightly beyond the upper, and the caudal fin comes to a pointed tip rather than the rounded or truncate tail of many riverine relatives. FishBase records 22–29 isolated dorsal spines ahead of 68–87 soft dorsal rays, with 2 anal spines followed by 70–98 anal soft rays — meristic counts consistent with the dense-rayed dorsal and anal fins that run the length of the rear body in the spiny eels.
The ground colour is light brown, overlaid with numerous small, round, dark brown spots scattered across the flanks. This spotted pattern is distinct from the striped or marbled patterns seen in some other Tanganyikan Mastacembelus, and consistent with a rocky-shore fish whose patterning may provide disruptive camouflage against the pebble and flagstone substrate it favours.
Habitat
Mastacembelus polli is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and has a broadly circumlacustrine distribution — it has been recorded around the lake's perimeter rather than being confined to one shore or basin. Within the lake it occupies the coastal zone, specifically the rocky benthic habitats of the littoral: flagstone, rock slides, pebbles, and the crevice-rich shoreline that Lake Tanganyika's ancient rocky margins offer in abundance.
The water chemistry of Lake Tanganyika is strikingly different from the soft, acidic water that many tropical spiny eels of Asia or West Africa prefer. Tanganyika is a deep, old rift lake whose waters are hard and strongly alkaline — pH typically runs 7.8 to 9.3, temperatures 75–81 °F, and general hardness 12–20 dH, with high concentrations of calcium and magnesium from the surrounding geology. The lake is also unusually well-oxygenated in its surface layers. Mastacembelus polli is adapted to this chemistry throughout its life; unlike many spiny eels, it emphatically does not want soft or acidic water.
The rocky benthic zone where M. polli lives is shared with a diverse community of littoral cichlids and other Tanganyikan endemics. The species' preference for crevices, loose rock, and pebble substrates suggests it shelters and forages among the boulders rather than burrowing into sediment, though like all Mastacembelidae it may wedge itself into tight gaps for security.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Mastacembelus polli a trophic level of 3.6 (±0.6), placing it as a mid-level carnivore that feeds primarily on invertebrates and small prey rather than being a specialist apex predator. In common with all spiny eels, it uses its fleshy, probing snout to search crevices and hard substrate for benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrate fauna of the rocky littoral.
The species' small adult size (max 5.5 in SL) constrains the scale of prey it takes compared with larger Tanganyikan Mastacembelus, and its spotted cryptic colouring and habitat among pebbles and flagstone suggest a searching, opportunistic forager rather than an ambush predator of the open substrate. In the aquarium it should be offered meaty foods appropriate to its size: bloodworm, small earthworm pieces, daphnia, and similar invertebrate fare, offered at dusk or after lights-out when the species is most active.
Mating
Mastacembelus polli is a spiny eel and accordingly an egg-scattering spawner that gives no parental care to its offspring. It is not a true eel and does not undertake any migratory spawning. Spawning in Mastacembelidae is broadly associated with seasonal environmental cues — rising water temperature, changes in rainfall and photoperiod — though in the stable, deep-water environment of Lake Tanganyika, triggers may relate more to minor seasonal shifts in temperature or water level than to the monsoon-flood cycle that governs riverine spiny eels.
Detailed field observations of spawning in M. polli specifically are not documented in the available literature. In the wider genus, courting adults are known to entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among vegetation, fine roots, or crevice-edge surfaces, after which the pair separate and the eggs are left unattended. Given the rocky habitat of M. polli, spawning likely occurs among the crevices and boulders of the littoral zone rather than over open sandy substrate.
Breeding
Mastacembelus polli is not reported as a fish that has been intentionally bred in the home aquarium. Like most spiny eels it scatters adhesive eggs with no parental care and the adults take no interest in the eggs once spawning is complete. The eggs hatch after a few days and the larvae are small, requiring fine first foods before graduating to larger invertebrate fare.
Its small adult size — at 5.5 in it is among the smallest Mastacembelus — makes it somewhat more tractable than giants like the fire eel for those wishing to attempt breeding, but the specialist Tanganyikan water chemistry (hard, alkaline, well-buffered) must be maintained, and a well-structured rocky environment that gives the fish security will be required. The species' rarity in trade means that captive-breeding experience is essentially undocumented in hobbyist literature; any successful account would be of genuine interest to the spiny-eel keeping community.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus polli is a specialist fish whose Tanganyikan origin is the dominant factor in its care. The water must be hard, alkaline and well-buffered — pH 7.8 to 9.0, temperature 75–81 °F, with mineral hardness reflecting the lake's calcium- and magnesium-rich chemistry. The usual community freshwater tank, soft and near-neutral, is unsuitable. M. polli belongs in a Lake Tanganyika set-up, alongside cichlids and other rift-lake endemics that share its water requirements.
Decoration should prioritise rockwork: stacked stones, flat flagstone, and pebbles providing many crevices and shaded gaps into which the fish can retreat and wedge. It is nocturnal and secretive by day, and without adequate shelter it will be perpetually stressed. A fine sand area allows it to probe the substrate in the manner of its family. Being scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications — Tanganyika set-ups should avoid these in any case — and to deteriorating water quality; good filtration and regular partial water changes are essential.
As with all spiny eels, a tight-fitting, fully sealed aquarium lid is non-negotiable. Mastacembelidae are accomplished escape artists, able to squeeze through surprisingly small gaps and climb wet surfaces, and they will leave an open tank and perish. Its small size relative to most spiny eels makes M. polli compatible with a wider range of Tanganyikan tankmates than large species, but it should not be kept with fish small enough to be eaten. It is rarely available in the hobby and commands interest among Tanganyika specialists.
Conservation
Mastacembelus polli is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated in February 2025. The assessment reflects its wide distribution around the circumference of Lake Tanganyika and the absence of evidence of a population decline. FishBase notes high resilience for the species, with minimum population doubling time estimated under 15 months — consistent with Least Concern status for a small, presumably relatively fast-maturing fish.
Nonetheless, Lake Tanganyika itself faces significant and well-documented pressures. Overfishing — including unsustainable harvest of the lake's enormous sardine and cichlid fisheries — sedimentation from deforestation on the surrounding hillsides, pollution from agricultural and domestic runoff, and rising water temperatures linked to climate change all affect the lake's ecology. Most directly relevant to a rocky-shore benthic species like M. polli, sedimentation and habitat alteration at the shoreline can degrade the flagstone and pebble habitats the species depends on. While the current assessment is reassuring, the health of the lake as a whole is the long-term guarantee of the fish's security.
