Mastacembelus tanganicae is a small spiny eel endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the ancient rift lake straddling East-Central Africa. Despite its sinuous, eel-like form it is not a true eel at all: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels of the order Synbranchiformes — kin to the swamp eels, not to the catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Its body plan is a case of convergent evolution on a burrowing, elongate lifestyle. Reaching about 7.5 in, it is one of thirteen mastacembelid species in a remarkable endemic radiation that colonised and diversified within Tanganyika over roughly six million years, adapting to the lake's clear, hard, alkaline water and rocky shoreline habitat in ways that set it apart from its river-dwelling relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus tanganicae was described by the British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1894 from Lake Tanganyika, making it one of the earliest-named members of the lake's spiny-eel flock. The Catalog of Fishes places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes. This order groups the spiny eels with the swamp eels (Synbranchidae); neither group has any close relationship to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes, and the eel-like body is a convergent adaptation to burrowing and crevice life rather than a mark of kinship.

The taxonomy of African mastacembelids has been turbulent. Travers (1988) separated the African lake and river species into the genera Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus, and M. tanganicae passed through both names — known at various times as Aethiomastacembelus tanganicae and Caecomastacembelus tanganicae. A 2005 revision of the family synonymised these genera back into Mastacembelus, restoring the current combination. M. tanganicae is also notable as the type species of the now-synonymised genus Afromastacembelus.

Molecular phylogenetic work published in Systematic Biology (2010) demonstrated that Lake Tanganyika holds a monophyletic radiation of thirteen endemic mastacembelid species, having diversified within the lake approximately 6.2 to 7.2 million years ago — one of the most species-rich spiny-eel flocks on Earth and a striking example of lacustrine adaptive radiation.

Morphology

Mastacembelus tanganicae is a slender, highly elongate fish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of about 7.5 in, making it one of the smaller members of the Tanganyika mastacembelid flock. Like all spiny eels, its body is scaleless to the eye, covered instead in tiny embedded scales and a thick coat of protective mucus that makes the animal feel smooth and slippery. Along the dorsal midline a series of short, isolated spines precede the soft dorsal fin; the soft dorsal and anal fins are long and low, continuous around the pointed tail.

The snout is drawn out into the fleshy, flexible proboscis characteristic of the genus, tipped with paired tubular nostrils that serve as chemosensory probes for foraging. The mouth is relatively small and ventral. Colouration follows the general pattern of many Tanganyika mastacembelids — brownish or olive on the back and flanks, often with mottling or pale markings that break up the outline against rocky and sandy substrates. Detailed colour descriptions from fresh wild material are limited in the published literature. The sexes are not readily distinguished externally; ripe females may appear fuller-bodied.

Habitat

Mastacembelus tanganicae is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, one of the African Great Rift Lakes and the second deepest lake in the world. The species occurs in shallow rocky areas of the lake, where it forages among boulders, rubble and sandy patches in demersal fashion. Like other members of the Tanganyika spiny-eel flock, it inhabits clear, well-oxygenated water — very different from the turbid, often soft and acidic lowland rivers favoured by many of its wider-ranging African relatives.

The water chemistry of Lake Tanganyika is hard and alkaline, a product of the volcanic bedrock and the lake's great age and depth. Surface temperatures in the shallow littoral zone range roughly from 75–82 °F depending on season and location. The pH is characteristically high for a freshwater body, typically around 8.5 to 9.0 in the open lake and littoral zones. These parameters define the environment that all Tanganyika mastacembelids are adapted to, and hobbyists keeping this species must replicate rift-lake conditions rather than the soft, neutral water appropriate for Asian or western-African spiny eels.

Feeding

Mastacembelus tanganicae is a benthic predator that uses its sensitive, probing snout to locate prey concealed in the substrate and among rocky crevices. In the shallow littoral zone of Lake Tanganyika, available prey includes small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and crustaceans — as well as any small organisms that shelter in rubble and sand.

In the aquarium the species accepts meaty live and frozen foods in the manner typical of spiny eels: bloodworm, small earthworms, Mysis shrimp and similar benthic fare offered after lights-out, when the fish is most active. Because it is small relative to most other commonly kept mastacembelids, suitable food sizes and tank companions differ from those of the larger fire or tire-track eels, and it should not be housed with fish small enough to serve as prey.

Mating

Mastacembelus tanganicae is a spiny eel and, like all Mastacembelidae, it is not a true eel: it does not undertake the long ocean spawning migration of the catadromous Anguilla species, nor does it build bubble-nests in the manner of the swamp-eel Monopterus. Spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners that breed in fresh water and give no parental care beyond the moment of spawning.

Specific courtship observations for M. tanganicae are not documented in the available literature. Based on what is known of related mastacembelids, mating likely involves two adults entwining and scattering adhesive eggs among vegetation, roots or rocky crevices, with spawning probably linked to seasonal cues. The stable, clear conditions of Lake Tanganyika — with its modest seasonal temperature variation — may provide somewhat different triggers than the monsoon-driven flooding cycle that cues reproduction in river-dwelling spiny eels.

Breeding

As a spiny eel, Mastacembelus tanganicae reproduces as an egg-scatterer in fresh water: a pair deposits adhesive eggs among vegetation or substrate, after which the adults disperse and provide no parental care. The eggs and larvae are left to develop unattended. This is the breeding mode of the entire family Mastacembelidae — not the bubble-nest guarding of swamp eels, and not the once-in-a-lifetime ocean spawning migration of true eels.

M. tanganicae has not been reported as successfully bred in the home aquarium in the available hobbyist literature. Its rift-lake origin, specialised water requirements and relatively obscure status in the trade mean it rarely appears in captive-breeding reports. Any attempt would require replicating Tanganyika's hard, alkaline, warm and well-oxygenated water, providing a mature, well-established system, and obtaining a compatible pair — a combination that demands considerable care and experience.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus tanganicae is an uncommon but genuine Lake Tanganyika species that appeals to hobbyists who specialise in Tanganyika community tanks. Its requirements differ significantly from those of the familiar Asian spiny eels: it needs hard, alkaline, oxygen-rich water with a pH in the region of 8.0–9.0, similar to that provided for cichlids from the same lake. Soft or acidic water is inappropriate and will stress the fish over time.

Like all spiny eels it is scaleless, making it sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality. A tight-fitting, sealed lid is essential — mastacembelids are notorious escape artists capable of squeezing through very small gaps and leaving water silently in the night. The tank should offer a sand or fine-gravel substrate for burrowing, rocky structures for shelter, and subdued lighting to encourage daytime activity. At a maximum of about 7.5 in it is far more manageable in size than the large Asian species, and it can be housed in a well-maintained Tanganyika community with appropriately sized tankmates such as smaller Julidochromis, Neolamprologus or Synodontis species.

The species is rarely seen in the retail trade and commands a premium when available, usually as a wild import from Tanzania, Burundi or Zambia. Patience in sourcing and a pre-established Tanganyika system will give any specimen the best chance of long-term success.

Conservation

Mastacembelus tanganicae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, most recently reconfirmed in a 2022 assessment. The species is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, where it occupies the shallow littoral zone shared with a large community of well-studied endemic fishes. The IUCN evaluation notes that no specific threats to the species have been identified and that its population is presumed stable.

Lake Tanganyika itself faces broad environmental pressures — sedimentation driven by deforestation of the surrounding catchment, overfishing of commercial species, and the effects of climate-related warming that has increased stratification and reduced deep-water oxygen replenishment. The specific impact of these stressors on shallow-water mastacembelids such as M. tanganicae has not been well quantified. As an endemic littoral species confined to a single lake, it is inherently more vulnerable to lake-wide changes than widespread river species, but its current Least Concern status reflects the absence of documented population declines.
