Rhinogobius immaculatus is a small true goby described in 2018 from a handful of shallow tributaries draining into the Qiantang River in Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, China. Like all members of the family Oxudercidae, it carries the hallmark of the true gobies: the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, the character that instantly separates the real gobies from the sleeper gudgeons. While the goby order is overwhelmingly marine, Rhinogobius represents one of the most species-rich radiations of freshwater gobies in East Asia, and R. immaculatus is among the smallest and most narrowly endemic — a temperate stream species apparently confined to a single river basin, discovered less than a decade ago and still with no formal conservation assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius immaculatus was formally described by Li, Li and Chen in 2018, with the type locality recorded as a tributary of the Qiantang River at Fuchunjiang Town, Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province, China, from specimens collected in October 2010. The description was published in the journal Zoological Research. The Catalog of Fishes places the genus Rhinogobius in the family Oxudercidae — the true gobies — rather than in the sleeper family Eleotridae, and this placement is reinforced by the fused pelvic sucker disc that all Rhinogobius share.

The specific epithet immaculatus is Latin for 'unspotted' or 'without markings', referring to the plain, unspeckled body pattern that distinguishes this species from the spotted and banded congeners found in the same region. The genus Rhinogobius is one of the largest groups of obligate freshwater gobies in East Asia, with over 80 valid species ranging across China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and neighbouring islands; R. immaculatus is among the more recently erected species in this assemblage.

The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) confirms the valid name as Rhinogobius immaculatus Li, Li and Chen, 2018, with no established synonyms. There are no earlier combinations under Gobius or other genera, as the species has only been known since its 2018 description.

Morphology

Rhinogobius immaculatus is a small, slender goby. Field specimens measured 1 in standard length (SL), and captive-held individuals reached a maximum of 1.5 in SL, indicating an adult size well under 1.5 in. The body is streamlined and cylindrical in the anterior portion, tapering toward the tail — a typical Rhinogobius build well suited to life on the bottom of fast-flowing streams.

The name immaculatus captures the distinguishing feature: the body and fins lack the dense spotting, barring or mottled patterning common in many congeners, presenting a comparatively clean appearance. Detailed meristic and morphometric data are available in the original 2018 description; as with most small Rhinogobius, the species shows the characteristic blunt snout and large eyes set high on the head.

The key structural character shared across all true gobies is present: the pelvic fins are united into a cup-shaped sucker disc on the ventral surface, which allows the fish to hold station on stones and gravel in flowing water. This immediately separates Rhinogobius from the superficially similar sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Sexual dimorphism follows the typical Rhinogobius pattern: males tend toward larger size and more intense or extensive colouration during the breeding season; females are generally smaller and plainer, and may develop a fuller abdomen when ripe.

Habitat

The known distribution of Rhinogobius immaculatus is restricted to three tributaries within the Qiantang River drainage in Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, eastern China. Specimens were taken from shallow, low-gradient freshwater streams with depths of approximately 4–19.5 in over substrates of sand and gravel — the clean, well-oxygenated, sunlit shallows typical of upland temperate East Asian watercourses.

Like most Rhinogobius, R. immaculatus is a temperate species, not a tropical one. The Qiantang River basin experiences distinct seasonal temperature swings, and species from this region typically prefer cool to moderate water temperatures; care guides for the broader genus cite ranges of approximately 57–79 °F depending on species, with a pH around 7.0–8.0 reflecting the moderately hard, slightly alkaline waters common in the limestone-influenced catchments of eastern China.

The species is a strictly freshwater resident — it is not amphidromous, and there is no evidence of a marine larval phase. The whole life cycle takes place within the stream system, which in principle should make captive breeding feasible once the species is established in the hobby.

Feeding

Rhinogobius immaculatus is an opportunistic micro-predator, as is the genus as a whole. In the wild, small Rhinogobius forage along the stream bottom for aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans and other small benthic prey, taking advantage of the sucker disc to stay in place on the current-swept substrate while hunting.

In captivity, the genus is consistently described as a live- and frozen-food fish. Suitable foods include bloodworm, mosquito larvae, Artemia (brine shrimp), Daphnia and Mysis shrimp, as well as small insect larvae and copepods. Most Rhinogobius will rarely accept dry flake food and will not thrive on it as a primary diet — keepers report that fish offered only flake tend to lose condition and colour over time. A diet based primarily on live and frozen meaty items, with dry foods offered only as an occasional supplement, is the approach that keeps the species in good health.

Mating

Rhinogobius is a cave and substrate spawning genus. Males establish territories centred on a sheltered site — a space beneath a flat stone, a crevice in gravel, or a piece of wood — and defend it against rival males. Courtship involves the male displaying his fins and intensifying any colour to attract ripe females into the nest site.

Based on the reproductive biology documented for Rhinogobius species from comparable East Asian stream habitats, breeding in wild populations occurs during the spring and early summer — April through July in Japanese populations studied in detail — aligned with rising water temperatures after winter. A male may receive spawnings from more than one female over a breeding season, with multiple clutches deposited within the same nest over successive visits.

Breeding

The breeding strategy of Rhinogobius immaculatus follows the resident freshwater cave-spawner pattern established across the genus. The female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the underside of a stone or within the nest cavity, then is evicted by the male, who takes sole charge of the brood. He guards the eggs vigorously against intruders and fans them continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and prevent fungal growth until they hatch.

Because R. immaculatus is a resident freshwater species — not amphidromous — the entire cycle takes place in fresh water, and there is no requirement for a marine larval phase. This means that captive breeding is biologically possible. The reproductive maturity size recorded in the original description was 1 in SL, confirming that these are small fish that mature early. Spawning frequency in the wild suggests males can receive and guard multiple clutches per season. Newly hatched fry are small and will require fine first foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii or microworm. As with other Rhinogobius, fry may be cannibalized if not separated from adults after hatching, so a dedicated rearing vessel is advisable once the eggs have hatched.

The species is not yet well established in the hobby, and captive breeding accounts are scarce; keepers should refer to experience with similar small Rhinogobius as a guide.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius immaculatus is a nano goby suited to a small, species-specific or carefully assembled community aquarium. Its maximum size of under 1.5 in means it can be kept comfortably in a tank of 10–15 US gal, though good filtration and oxygenation are essential — this is a stream fish that expects well-aerated, clean water with some current.

Temperature is a critical point: this is a temperate Chinese species, not a tropical community fish. Water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius is appropriate; sustained temperatures above 79–81 °F are likely to cause stress. A pH in the range 7.0–8.0, reflecting the moderately hard waters of its native Qiantang River tributaries, suits the species. No salt is required or appropriate.

The tank should be decorated to mimic the species' natural habitat: a sand-and-gravel substrate, flat stones and smooth pebbles that males can establish territories beneath, and moderate water movement from the filter outlet. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as small gobies can be surprisingly agile and may jump. Males are territorial toward one another and will spar, particularly over nest sites, so a tank holding more than one male should be large enough to include multiple flat-stone retreats with visual breaks between them. Tankmates, if used at all, should be peaceful, similarly sized cold-to-cool-water fish that will not compete for nest sites.

Diet must consist primarily of live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia and similar invertebrate items. Flake food is unlikely to be accepted willingly and will not sustain the fish in good condition. R. immaculatus is a newly described species not yet widely available in the trade; specimens entering the hobby are likely wild-caught and should be quarantined carefully.

Conservation

Rhinogobius immaculatus has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than assign a status not substantiated by assessment. The species is known only from three stream tributaries within the Qiantang River basin in Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, China — a narrow endemic range that in principle makes it vulnerable to habitat alteration, water quality degradation, or hydrological change within those catchments.

The Qiantang River basin and its upland tributaries face pressures common to densely populated regions of eastern China: agricultural runoff, small-scale damming and water abstraction, riverside development and occasional pollution episodes. For a species known from just a few stream sites, any deterioration of water quality or stream flow in those specific tributaries could have disproportionate consequences. The species was described only in 2018 from specimens collected in 2010, so its full range within the basin may not yet be fully characterised; additional surveys could reveal it to be more or less widespread than currently documented.

Because R. immaculatus is not yet established in the hobby, there is no meaningful captive trade to either relieve or add pressure on wild populations. If the species becomes available commercially, buyers should seek captive-bred stock to avoid drawing on what may be a limited wild population.
